It is good to realize how many others are struggling with this problem like I am. I have come to the conclusion that is related to the fact that our culture is very shallow and people are being "taught" (read brainwashed) to judge others in an instant based on their appearance. Over and over I am reminded in my daily life how much I am being sized up by others from great distances, even on the freeway going full speed, about my apparent age, as well as "availability" and "scam-ability"....YUK! It is so gross, what has our country come to? The TV is a major component of the cause of this problem, for sure.

It's been comforting to know that I'm not alone in this frustration! I'm 26 and was told tonight (again) that I look 13 by a "friendly" older woman at a restaurant I was eating at with friends. It makes my blood boil when people take it upon themselves to share their thoughts about my looks. Why do they feel they have the right to do that? Why do they not realize how incredibly insensitive it is? Sometimes it feels like they are purposefully being hateful even though they also follow up with how wonderful it will be when I'm older.
The worst part for me, which I haven't seen mentioned too often on here, is that i have been mistaken as my husband's daughter more than once. My husband is only 1 year older than me!!!!! Also, I've been confused as my friends' daughter as well.
When it happens I just laugh with them and tell them my real age, which i should learn to stop doing because that just leads to a 2nd rant about how young I look and more insults, and i walk away feeling totally humiliated and..."less than" others who have matured at a normal pace.
I'm a marriage and family therapist and it definitely creates problems in this field. People don't want to listen to a child! They want to listen to someone they see as a mature adult. I just wish i could think of a brilliant response to these people that take it upon themselves to gush over our looks...something that isn't rude, just something polite enough to let them know I won't accept that type of treatment from them. I don't know them and they don't know me and I don't appreciate it.

OMG!! Glad i'm not the only one going through this. I am 29 yrs. old (soon to be 30 in December) I have three children, five cats, and one husband. I wear a wedding ring all the time. You can almost count on everytime we go out, someone opens they're big a** mouth and says " you're 29...I thought you were 17!" >:( Please, don't let my husband on the scene. Some people are crazy enough to think he is my father. >;) It's just very insulting to get treated like that, and I think what's worse is that people then say, " Girl you're gonna appreciate that young look later on." Like i'm supposed to just drop to my knees and start thanking GOD right that moment. %-) Don't get me wrong I love the way I look, I like to think that I am very attractive. :-D Just sometimes people need to realize, whether they are trying to or not, they say their comments in a condescending tone. :-( You know what else i've found, alot of old nasty men are always very eager to make conversation, and they come right out and say that they thought I was 16 or 17...excuse me, if I were really 16 or 17 wouldn't that make you an outright child molester. Nasty old geezer! >;)

I enjoyed reading most of the replies, who new so many people were walking around with this issue?
I am 30 years old and when I go out to buy liquor I get carded, because they think I am not 18 yet. In a store I went to buy a face cream, which was clearly advertised for women of age 30 and up. When I asked whether I could get a trial version of the tube the lady out the counter gave me a questioning look, after which she replied "the cream is for age 30 and up". Store clerks refer to me as "that girl". Guys will come up and talk to me, until they hear about my age. One guy commented: "No way! I thought you were much younger, you don't look like a mom!" Uhm yes, I am 30 and no, I'm not a mom.
What to do about it.. I don't wear girly clothes, I wear lots of make-up (but with a natural look), I have a proper haircut.. the only thing I feel would help is gain a few pounds and look fat. I am average height, but I have a petite frame. I don't think it is worth gaining unhealthy weight in order to become socially accepted. I've accepted myself, so anytime I get carded at the liquor store I just laugh and happily show them my ID.

I'm 29 & today a woman & her young son had stopped me in the supermarket & told me I was a great driver because I was driving my mom to the store.
I know there us a lot if things u could fix about myself, but all I look like is a teen dressing up like an adult when I am an adult.
I wear makeup, try to wear heels when I can, I wear my hair down & it is shoulder length. Shorter than it has been in the past. I do wear glasses, but they are small frames because contacts are uncomfortable.
It's great to hear that there are others like me out there.
I'm sick of hearing I will be grateful to look young when I am older. Well dammit I'm older now & the gratefulness is not kicking in with the grey hair & it's not going too pal!

I have the same problem too, Im 28 and people think I'm 16 to 18 years old, it gets annoying sometimes and frustrated, I get tired of having to explain myself all the time, I have an associates degree and I'm a licensed real estate agent. I was told by one guy that people won't take me serious because I look young, he said that would be my handicap, it made me kind of sad, I am a confident person and very head strong, but sometimes it gets frustrating and I lose my confidence as a result of the insult of some people. If I tell them my age why can't they just accept it, why do they have to go on and on about it. As a result I don't want to hang out with friends sometimes because I'm self conscious about my age, even though I may be older than some of my friends I probably look younger then them, My younger brother looks older than me, that's what worries me the most, they think he's the older brother, alot of this has to do with genetics, I sometimes wonder if there is something wrong with me, maybe a problem with my genes that does not allow me to get older, or age at a very slow pace. you can grow a beared or fix your hair or do as much as you want, who knows maybe it will help you, but in the end you will still look young, is not something that any of us can run away from, I hope you guys find the answers your looking for, and I am very great full I found this site.

I'm 70 and everyone who meets me thinks I'm about 50.
I ain't complaining XD
But when I was 17 I worked in a cotton mill and all the older (to me) women there, thought I was about 26.
How do you explain that?

I'm so happy I came upon this thread!
I am a 22 (almost 23) year old female looking between 15 and 18. I have a bachelor's degree and am worried that won't be enough in the work place. It takes all my energy to not snap at people who tell me I look like a freshman in high school. I'm the manager at my store and customers never believe me. I'm tall and thin, seriously almost started binge eating and chain smoking in hopes to look older. My boyfriend looks almost 30 with his beard and we get the strangest looks when we're together.
Maybe when I'm in my 40s and getting carded it will make my day like it does to my mom, but for now I just really would love to look my age. (And WHY OH WHY do people think it's a compliment to say I look like a 15 year old? What adult wants to look 15??) I think I'll staple my diploma and my ID to my shirt.

I am and 18 year old girl, and people are always shocked when I say that I am 3.5 years older than my sister, as they think that she is 3.5 years older than me. Once, after 4 people had done it in one day I asked them why they thought that and a 14 year old girl, who thinks she is 21 said it was because I was immature. This annoyed me a lot, as I am not an immature person. I just wish that I could figure out how to come across as an older person, as I have to start looking for employment soon, nad I would feel far more confident if I looked my age.

It's always unnatractive people or those just hanging on in the middle that seem to throw those kind of remarks out there when they meet you. I've never came across hot girls who have something bad to say, but the fat ugly ones will give you the news like you dont own a mirror. "you're too skinny, you're baby faced, are you sure you're this age" so on. shallow BS, and their way of climbing the ladder is to rather than climb on their own, throw you below them. had some fat dude following me around calling me baby face the other night, now this guy was fat and dopey looking.. i dont expect him to get a girlfriend any time soon but i kept that to myself because i wouldn't have gained anything from it. I'm not an ugly person and there was no need to try and sink them to where they already where in comparison. in fact allot of girls tell me i'm handsome, i'm a 19 y.o male (20 soon).. but people assume i'm more in the 16-17 bracket. thats frustrating because it actually makes you feel younger to be constantly told you look it.. i'm around people my age, but feeling like THEY are a few years older than me, and i'm mixing with supreme beings. it's not cool.. i want a girlfriend but feel i'm not worthy of one my age!
all i can say is, every time someone gives you sh*t, just tell them that you're the X year old version of you, and theres no way you can look anything but the age you are. and dont forget the same shallow bastard that insults you has 10 more things wrong with them and thats why they try to make your one thing to be an elephant. >;)

I'm sort of in the same boat as I am 24 years old working on my master's degree. I interviewed with an insurance rep a couple months ago and said "To me you're just a kid" without even knowing my age. The guy was only 8 years older than me, but didn't know my age but just that I was a college graduate. I have a young looking face.
However, I am fortunate to have a high hairline. Always have had one. I discovered that if I do some sort of hairstyle where it shows the top of my hairline, I actually look older. I am in the process now of getting glasses that will seem to add some more years onto my life. One of my teachers started his career pretty young and students' parents had trouble taking him seriously. He noticed that they would be much more receptive when he would simply tuck a newspaper under his left arm.
Not such a bad idea.

I enjoyed reading your posts, I understand what all of you are going through, thanks for sharing. Im a real estate agent and I've had people think I am 20 or 21, when in fact I'm 29, but you can't let what people think stop you from doing what you have to do, I can't just give up on my career simply because I have a young looking face, you have to do the best you can and hope that people will see your professionalism and expertise instead of how young or old you look
