For about 3-4 days before my period starts I have a slight discharge that is rather smelly. Then when my period starts it is heavy and last for 5-7 days. For around 10-14 days nothing and the discharge will start over. I was thinking that I may be pre-menopausal. Any suggestions

It may be because you must be entering a menopause stage, menopause start in 40 and 50, and it can show irregular periods..
