I am not sure if I can describe it accurately, but I keep having problems near the very back (the end) of my nasal passage. Maybe it is the nasopharynx area which is right above the soft palate, or it could be around the posterior nasal apertures (choanae). It is quite hard to reach this area using nasal sprays / drops / gels through the nostrils, and I guess it cannot be reached via the throat. When it is cold and/or dry, this area flares up, giving me pains and sometimes infections. Nasal rinse can be helpful but I feel the problem is more localized to the small area. So my question is: is there a way to treat this area more easily? Any suggestions are appreciated!

Helo, star_gazing.

It is important to first identify the underlying cause of your symptoms before starting any treatment. Some common causes of problems in the nasopharynx or posterior nasal apertures include allergies, sinus infections, nasal polyps, or even acid reflux. Therefore, it is best to consult with a healthcare professional, such as an ENT (ear, nose, and throat specialist) for a proper diagnosis.

Once the underlying cause is identified, treatment options may include:

  1. Allergies: Antihistamines, nasal corticosteroids, and immunotherapy (allergy shots) can help alleviate allergy symptoms.

  2. Sinus infections: Antibiotics, nasal decongestants, and saline nasal rinses can help treat sinus infections.

  3. Nasal polyps: In some cases, nasal polyps may need to be surgically removed.

  4. Acid reflux: Changes to diet and lifestyle, as well as medications such as proton pump inhibitors, can help reduce acid reflux symptoms.

In addition to medical treatment, you can also try some home remedies to relieve your symptoms, such as using a humidifier, drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding irritants like cigarette smoke or strong odors, and practicing good nasal hygiene by regularly rinsing your nasal passages with saline solution.
