I injured my toenail on Thursday night, and it completely peeled back all the way to the cuticle... it was the most horrific sight. I had it pulled out on Friday afternoon without any numbing medication. I wasn't in any pain because that toenail was damaged due to fungus, so it was pretty much begging to be pulled lol.
I haven't had any major pain surprisingly, and I was told to use a triple antibiotic ointment so that is what I've been doing. It still bleeds a little and only hurts when I'm changing the dressing (okay, I don't do it, my hubby does cos I can't stand looking at it lol ) but today I did experience some discomfort and I don't know if it's because I walked on it more than I should have, or if it's something else.
When I took a shower tonight, I noticed it was a little swollen and kinda tingly. Is this normal? I had it elevated prior to my shower (took a nap) but otherwise have been sitting down without elevating it.
I'm just a big baby when it comes to pain, or having to go back to the doctor so any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I just don't want it getting infected.
Thanks in advance. :-D

I cannot think of anything else that you can do other than to wait for the toenail to grow back. This will take a long time.

Tonight I am in excruciating pain... I left the toe exposed for a while, and I noticed what looks like a little bit of pus. I'm really avoiding going to the doctor, so Is there anything I can do here at home to kill any infection I might be developing?

Wash the pus away with soap and warm water if it is not too painful to do so. Dry, and then apply topical antibiotics. Excruciating pain could mean that the infection may be spreading. You will need to see your doctor at the earliest opportunity. Check your body temperature with an oral thermometer. If you have a slight fever, go to the ER right away if your family doctor cannot see you.

I would also say that it's a good idea to use some hydrocortisone gel if you can. That's what I think hoseclamps meant by topical antibiotics. HOw are you doing? Can you keep us posted on how you're doing? Thanks!
