I just started this spotting business about 5 months ago. Before that, I had been off the pill for about 7 years. I decided to go back on because my period was coming sooner and sooner every cycle (so irregular) and it was to help my acne. First pill they put me on I started spotting about 5-8 days before period was due. I figured that this was due to being on a new pill and it would take a couple of months to regulate. Never happened. So after the third month I went back to my Dr and she switched me to Portia, saying that the first one probably didn't have enough progesterone. First month on the Portia went great, like clockwork, but this month (my second on it) I am again spotting a full 7 days early. I'm 37, and I've seen an RE in the past and had a full work up twice because of fertility problems that turned out to be male, not me. Both times my bloodwork, u/s and HSG were all perfect. I'm going next week to see my Dr again and I;m wondering if I should hold out hope that it's just a matter of finding the right pill?

I've read all of these posts about women spotting and bleeding BEFORE their period. I have been going through this on and off for over 2 years and Ladies my heart goes out to all of you. It has been HELL. My husband and I have been working on getting pregnant and have been TWICE that we know. One ended in Miscarriage and the other and Blighted Ovum which means Baby sac but no baby :-( I have had ALL the tests done including and HSG. Like one other on this blog I had a Leep procedure and a Cone Biopsy and everything and I mean everything has come back negative. I have done the Geritol for cervical fluid, the Robitussin for the Guafenisin, the Folic acid, the pregnancy vitamins, acupuncture, meditation (which i find helps the most and even stopped the bleeding for a little while but I need to be more consistent with) the BBT calender and temperature taking which is Extremely stressful because you are timing sex ALL THE TIME... On and on and on so the bottom line YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

Here is what I have come to thus far, I dont think its a coincidence that we are ALL experiencing very similar if not exact symptoms. My doctor has said things like, well maybe its just the way YOU are even though this just starting happening 2 years ago...

I find that when I eat SUGAR or SWEETS this problem comes back with a vengeance. It returns with itchiness, irritation and odor. Also the closer my period gets the worst the itchiness gets. I think that the fact that we are ALL in the same boat proofs what I have thought for some time and try to dissuade myself from... its the effects of the environment on our systems. Im trying a detox as it is the only thing I havent done and I will do as much Naturally as possible and stay away from the CLOMID (which I have done), doctors and Fertility Clinics for IUI's (yes I've done that too!

Find a Progesterone at Whole foods that has no WILD YAMS because with the toxicity our bodies are dealing with we are making less progesterone which i believe is the reason I was unable to carry my last pregnancy to term. The fetus was not developing fast enough and everything I have researched says THAT is a PROGESTERONE ISSUE.

I'm doing a liver and kidney cleanse and I'm trying a product called Antioxiplus and another called Fertilplus and a Green drink like Pro Greens by Nutricology. I've had a feeling about doing this for some time and I think this is the way for me to go. If the bleeding stops I will keep you posted along with whether or not I have conceived.

Blessings and HEALTH to you all. Thank you for sharing and making me feel like I have a group of understanding spirits in the world so I am NOT ALONE!

I don't know if this will help anyone, but here it goes. My mom had a hysterectomy several years ago which effected her hormone levels. A few years later she found out about and took a saliva test. She sent it in to a doctor specializing in bio-identical hormones. Special creams were made tailored to her specific hormone needs. She's had to have it adjusted over time as her body has changed, but it has been beneficial to her. There's info. on the web for Bioidentical therapy. Her case isn't like those stated above, but we're all dealing with hormones, so I thought I'd include it. Thanks for all who are posting. It has helped me to be grateful for the the problems I'm not having as much of. Best wishes to you all.

I KNOW what you all are going through. I'm 30 and I was on birth control for about 5 years before stopping 1 1/2 years ago. Since then I have the brown spotting before my period and I have been having 2 periods a month. I've had all kinds of test run: US, biopsy, blood work to check my hormones, thyroid testing, adrenal gland testing. You name it and I have had it! All of my tests have come back normal. I was even rubbing a progesterone cream into my arm every night but no luck with that either!!! My doctor keeps telling me that maybe it is stress related. I don't think I'm anymore stressed out than the average person. She also suggested I might need to have surgery to see if I have endometriosis (sp?). I'm at a loss of what to do next. This really has started to interfere with my "love time" with my husband. I wish you all the best and hopefully we can all get some answers soon!

I am having the same issues (week long spotting before my period). It all started when my obgyn put me on the 3month cycle bc pills where I would only have a period every three months after my son was born 4 years ago. That did not work because I had a period every month. Needless to say, i stopped doing that but now spot and then period. Two years ago we decided trying to have another and are still trying we no success. It is very frustrating. Doc has done blood work and said all levels are fine. Last November I had an abnormal pap smear and they had to do a colposcopy (scrapping cervix) not fun at all! But everything came back normal. I chalked it up to that when I had the first pap smear, i was already spotting. I am about to go visit a new doc and hopefully they can give me better information and maybe suggest clomid to regulate me? I am glad to see that I am not the only one in this situation. It is very frustrating!

i have spotting between periods and did get pregnant easily with my first child. we had been trying for 14 months for a second child then had lap and dye test. i was told that i had an infection after my first child and it "destroyed" both ovaries so ovulation tests, temp shifts and hormone levels are all normal but the egg can't make it to the uterus. no chance of a second child. my advice is that this may be normal but get tested for everything. if the cause is endometriosus you need to get it treated quickly and have babies soon.

I have the same problem as everyone else here - dark brown/black spotting for about 7-10 days before my actual period. Even when my period comes, it is fairly light, but at least some red blood. My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for about two years now. We have tried naturally, and we have had some assistance from a fertility clinic. So far, we have done 8 IUI's and none of them have gotten us pregnant. Now we are considering in vitro fertilization (IVF). I'm just wondering if anyone has had the same problem as me, but successfully gotten pregnant through IVF? I don't want to spend all that money on IVF if there is an underlying medical condition that should be treated first before we do IVF.

I know this is an old post but I have had this problem for years.  It's so annoying because it's almost like having a period for a week to 10 days per month, even though my actual period is only about 3 days long.  There is a big difference between the pre-period bleeding and my actual period.  My period is heavier and I frequently feel pain in one of my ovaries.  I too have had tests done and researched this but nothing has been found.   I just wondered if anyone has found a definitive cause and possible solution.  I had endometriosis years ago and was treated for it with Synarel (not sure if that is the correct spelling.)  It is a nasal spray - one nostril in the morning and the other nostril 12 hours later for 6 months.  It worked and I had no more endometriosis symptoms after that but noticed a few years ago  this pre-period bleeding.

I too have the brown spotting 4-5 days before my period starts and now I am getting red spotting exactly between my periods.  This has been happening for 1 1/2 years and my doctor's only suggestion is birth control which I don't want to take.  My husband and I have been married for 7 years and I haven't taken BC since the 3rd month of our marriage.  We thought we were really good at timing and watching the cycle (no "accidents"), now I'm wondering if I can even have children.  Did anyone ever figure out the cause or prevention of the spotting?  Because this post is so old I figured someone might have figured out something...if so, please reply, there are so many of us still frustrated!!!!!

Hello:

I had spotting in between my periods. I only had about two weeks out of the month free from spotting or menstruation. After seeing my doc, she found a polyp in my uterus while doing a pelvic utrasound. I had to have a minor outpatient surgery called D&C. I am TTC and after the surgery the frequent spotting stopped but I am still spotting about 4-5 days before my period. I do not know if that is normal though.

I hope this helps because I know how frustrating it can be.

If you can believe it, I've been spotting in between my periods for 8 years! Sometimes just after my period ends, sometimes in the middle, and sometimes just before my period begins. Sometimes it is only light, and sometimes it is the heavy brown blood, that most of you speak of. I have been to 5 doctors, a specialist (whose solution was a different kind of birth control pills, which did not help), and have had ultra sounds, blood tests, etc. Everything under the sun, but tests always show "I am fine". So ladies, I have something to propose to you, that I have noticed DOES affect how much I spot: when I am very stressed out, I spot MORE. When I eat a lot of phytoestrogens in a month, I spot MORE. What are phytoestrogens you ask? They are compounds in many foods, that resemble the estrogen molecule, and so they trick your body into thinking they are a real thing, and throw off your hormones like crazy! I'm a vegan, but for the most part, have no problem avoiding tofu, or other fake meats (ie. veggie hot dogs, veggie weiners). However, when you consider that soy (a BIG name on the phytoestrogen list), is in soy lecithin (in nearly every ingredient list, of every pre-packaged food at the grocery market), we start to see JUST how inundated we are with phytoestrogens. Soy sauce, teriyaki, miso, soybean oil.....it's everywhere. Another MAJOR phytoestrogen food is green tea. This is why in recent years you may have heard about the soy & green tea controversy ("does it cause breast and uterine cancers"?). The point is, there are many things that can cause us to spot. I've noticed that if I exercise hard for a month, and then stop (out of being too busy to do so), that I spot. Sometimes my body follows the cycle of the moon. And better yet, if you are around a group of females on a regular basis (ie. in a university class with the same girls, all year, or live with a house of girls), YOUR body will try to match THEIR cycles (because we give off hormones). I'm no doctor, but have been forced over the years to research this stuff on my own, track my own periods/spotting, and at least LEARN about my body (although a finding a permanent solution may not be easy). The point is, that you are very likely fine. Accept your body as the unique, delicately balanced being that it is, and move on with life. If your body feels like spotting, let it spot :)
