I am a 20 year old that seems to always get strep 1 to 2 times a year I was wondering if there was any long term effects of getting strep again and again.

Hi,

I've been going through the same thing, for several years now – I get strep throat every few months.  I've talked with my doctor about the same thing you're asking, basically, she said that antibiotics might get less and less effective in fighting it and that I might develop tonsil stones (if I haven't already). The only way to completely get rid of the problem is, of course, tonsil removal surgery and I'm still scared to have it, even though the last time I got strep throat was pretty horrible, way worse than any of the previous infections. I ended up having to take 10 penicillin shots to stop the infection. I guess the tonsils get damaged, too so the infection becomes more painful and harder to treat.

Wish you all the best,

Nicole
