hey everyone, i really don't know if anyone is going to read this considering this blog is pretty old but, i am twelve years old, yes i know I'm young and I've had quite bad pain in my throat going on for about a year now, i visited my pediatrician about three times, they tested for strep, NEGATIVE. they tested for mono, NEGATIVE. They told me the same thing every time, until the second time i went they said it was a post nasal drip and enlarged tonsils, so here i am thinking I'm fine with claritin, which did not help me at all, but everyone is different, and BAM, a week later, my antibiotics, gone, I'm feeling worse so my dad calls the specialist, (EAR, NOSE, AND THROAT) and of course you know that I'm going for my throat and they tell me that the problem is with my tonsils and not my throat, comes to find out i do have enlarged tonsils, but they give me this really nasty medicine, tasting like silver or nickels or something like that, (i prefer tablets and capsules, consider liquid are completely disgusting). 1 month passes by, i have a sore throat, AGAIN, so i take a day off considering i hate school. i felt this way for approximately a week. went away. same thing happened on and off for a few months, so my dad called the special, AGAIN, but of course with my luck, it's about a month away due to appointment being booked, then about a week before my appointment, i get it again, of course, so i stay home and go to my pediatrician in the afternoon about 2pm, so i really didn't have to miss school, but it's better for me, my dad really only want to go to the doctors so i could get a note and antibiotics, because he's cool like that, that day after i went to school, what a drag, i start feeling horrible, so i go to the nurse and i had a fever of 99.1, she said that she wasn't going to dismiss me but my dad can dismiss me personally, but not excused, so she calls my dad and he doesn't pick up the phone because he was re-modeling my kitchen, i would of went home that day, can you believe that!!?? But whatever, lets get on with this, the next day i went to the nurse, AGAIN, and my temp. was 99.8 this time, so she calls my dad, and he was gonna dismiss me until she like persuaded him i missed a lot of school already, so she told me to lay down for a bit and drink water, i got up and told her i was ready to leave class considering i missed about 30 minutes of class, so she told me to goo back later, and she gave me a bubbler pass so that i can go to the bubbler as many times as i please, of course i missed as much class as i could, i go back and my temperature is down, which is not good for me, and she was supposed to call my dad back, to see if he wanted to pick me up but she didn't, so i get in the car at the end of the day when school is finally over, and my dad tells me he was waiting for the call and he had medicine waiting for me and all. The week really gone by quickly, so Tuesday March. 17, 2009 (saint Patrick day) i finally go to my specialist and she tells me some news i was hoping to hear until she told me the 3 side affects, I WAS GETTING MY TONSILS REMOVED. FINALLY, HALLELUJAH, no not hallelujah, i found out i was going to get a white scab in the back of my throat, and it was going to smell disgusting for about 2 weeks, so i would have bad breath for 2 weeks!! how embarrassing is that, i only told you the story on how i got to this, it never happened yet though, and i have no clue when i am going to take these bad boys out, I'll find out on Thursday, I'll keep you updated if you would like, Sorry to keep you reading, bye, and thank you.

Yeah do not worry about the whole thing.
Just eat and drink LOADS. when I say loads I mean LOADS!
I had my tonsils out 3 days ago now and The best bit of advice I can give is probably chew gum. If im not eating Im chewing gum. it helps keeping your throat from drying up and is good exercise for your jaw etc after the op.
Just relax on the day and you will be fine. keep up ur meds and try stay away from germs- ppl with coughs etc!

I'm a 28 year old male and wanted to share my experiences so far.
Day 1 - Incredibly easy, my parents were shocked at how I was wide awake and almost chatty just after a general anesthesia.
I started setting my alarm for every 4 hours at this time to take my pain meds like clock work.
Day 2 - As easy as day 1, no problems at all, eating berry applesauce, jello, slim fast, ice cream, sherbert, popsicles, tried pudding but it's so thick, rice pudding is amazing though and the rice breaks up the thickness!!
Day 3 - This is when it started to get worse. I developed a mild fever and started taking Tylenol in addition to my hydrocodone pain meds. I didn't want to eat as much and the white mucus started forming on the back of my throat. At times it began to be difficult to swallow, but just keep with the ice water and eventually it'll go down. I also allowed myself to cough a little bit as needed (mainly while trying to sleep).
That night I slept with the TV on and basically went through a waking sleep all night long. I'd wake up every 10 minutes or so and be up a few minutes and then keep falling back to sleep. I'd also make it a point to drink water whenever I was salivating or in pain or do my mild coughing routine. I "slept" for 12 hours and felt pretty rested afterwards with weird dreams.
Day 4 - Much the same as day 3, with a mild fever, but throat is better with fully formed mucus back there. I'm eating less than day one or two, but I'm thinking that tomorrow feels like soup day. I'm avoiding all scratchy foods so as not to induce any bleeding.
On day 2, I coughed and noticed a little dot of blood that went away when I chewed on some ice.
So, I'm still on my pain medicine, but am weening down a bit, from 2 Tbsps to about 1.25. I'm thinking tomorrow night I'll work down to under one and see how it goes.
So far, no ear pain, and mild sore throat considering. The mucus layer has also seemed to reduce the actual throat pain as well. No swollen uvula either, so we'll see.
Worst part now is the mild fever, but hopefully that'll stop soon I'm not taking any antibiotics due to allergy issues.
So far, the surgery hasn't been horrible and certainly not worse than I thought it would. We'll see how that changes in the coming days and I'll let you know....

OMG you guys are friggn scaring me, lol. Im such a punk when it comes to surgery. I had surgery when I was 23 now Im 27 and still horrified. Im going to take your advice and get the liquid medicine. As adults we think to much about the pain so we usually sike ourselves out. Ill probably pass out before they even give me the IV. Im a war vet with two kids and still scared. 8-| But Ill try to think about what most of you said and stay in bed the whole day. I guess Ill get a straw for my liquids, and as far as my kids there gonna have to go to the babysitters. IDK, wish me luck, Im deff going to need it. I took a week off of work for this, now reading what you guys wrote about the 7th day. Oh god. I hope when I come back to work, Im not gonna have to be high on drugs. Well thanks for all the advice. :-)

I had my tonsils removed one week ago and I am still experiencing a lot of pain. The ear aches have began and it seems like one side of my throat hurts worst than the other. I was not expecting the tongue pain. My tongue has been swollen and hurting since day 2. The medicine only last about 3 good hours. And the pain starts all over again. When u lay down it becomes more agitated than sitting up. I am hoping that I feel better soon. This has been a very unpleasant experience.

Ok so,
I just got my tonsils out on Monday and its now sat, so that makes it day 6.
When i arrived at the surgery center the nurses were really friendly and talked to me about a lot of things. They hooked me up to the computer and put my IV and that heart rate clamp on my finger. I told them I was really nervous and they said "yeah I can tell, you heart rate it going a million miles an hour." But them talking to me helped a TON! I just took some deep breaths and after they got done with paper work and having the doctors come in and tell me what was gunna happen, they gave me some seditives and it made me goofy. I was so relaxed, it was amazing. So they wheeled me into the surgery room and by that time i was the happiest girl in the world. They told me to slide to the surgery table, so i did. Then the anstesiaologist told me to breath two deep breatsh through the oxygen mask so I did and by the second breath I was feeling GREAT! Then he saidn he was going to put the anastesia in and he said that it would burn right about...now and I said "dont feel anything" and thats the last thing i remember.
Next thing I new I was getting asked by a nurse what my pain level was on a scale of 1-10 10 being the worst. I answered with a 5. So she put more meds in me and asked the same thing a couple min later. And i replayed with a 4. She thought that was good so she let me eat some ice chips. I wasnt really in any pain at all. It was mroe of an irritating feeling in the back of my throat. Like there was some skin flappin back there. So, then i chewed on some ice and they said that most people my age were either puking or passed out still. But I was ready to go! So they helped me walk to a chair since i was doing so well and gave me some gatorade and i waited for my parents to come get me. They walked in the room and were so suprised that I was actually sitting up and talking and laughing with the nurses.
So after I got home I sat there and just thought about how good I felt. But I was preparing myself for it to get worse the next couple of days because I heard many stories. So I ate some soft foods and some friends came and saw me and then I took some more meds and they made me sleepy so I fell asleep and slept pretty much the hole night besides when I set my alarm to get up and take my meds again.
Second day- I was feeling pretty good all day. I finished my online history class and did some other things i needed to do. I took naps here and there. Mostly right after I took my pain drugs. They make u feel so zonked out. Its actually kind of nice.
Third day- I could deffinitly tell a differnce this day. I made sure I took my meds every 4 hours and I was rotating every time with Childrens Motrin and Liquid hydrocodine. All I ate was popcicles, gatorade, and pudding. I had already lost 2 pounds.
Fourth Day- I didnt sleep much that night before, my mom turned on the Humidifire and that helped from my mouth drying out. I woke up in a lot of pain because I would sleep with my mouth open cuz my adnoides were also taken out so it made it a little swollen in there. I was so HUNGARY! I ate a really really soggy grilled cheese. It was nice.
Keep in mind, ill i do is sleep, read twilight and facebook stalk.
Fifth day- I had a lot of pain in the morning again. I put ice packs on my neck and chewed on ice and did everything to help the pain! I also developed a horrible taste in my mouth that made me want to puke. So make sure you have lots of mouth wash! DONT GARGLE! I didnt eat much, I layed outside for a while because I was sun deprived. I went to bed and slept prety well, except for when I woke up and kept feeling liquid in my throat that wouldnt go away. I went to the bathroom and spit blood into the toilet. I was so scared i woke my mother up and she told me that a scab just prolly broke. So i drank really cold water and it stopped it pretty fast. I felt like i swolled a lot of blood so I tried to drink something to keep me from getting an upset stomach. I feel back asleep off and on the rest of the night. I woke up in a lot of pain and my mom called the docter and he said that i could take the meds every 2 hours for a couple of days if i needed to. This has helped alot.
Here I am, alive. It;s really not bad besides some of the comlications that happens. But just make sure you drink every second u get and make sure u take your pain meds at all time. Set an alarm on ur cell phone! And the humidifire really helped! Im eating ramon noodles like 3 times a day now which is beter than liquids and nothing. Iv lost like 6 pounds so far. But im not complaining about that :-)
I'v had worse strep throats and I keep telling myself that it's worth it in the end, which it is. Id much rather do this then go through strep and tonsilitus every month again. Eh.
Just tough it out and man up. It will end and get better. Just prepare yourself for the 3-6th days. Then after that you know you survived because I feel a lot better.

MOST PAINFUL EXPERIENCE EVER!
Not at all what I was expecting. I had looked over all these sites beforehand and most of them said "its nothing worse than a really abd saw throat" ... rubbish!
I had mine out on friday and im 18..; You go in and sign a few forms, I then got my hands made numb by a cream... you then get into a gown, then go and sit in the anaesetic room. They wire you up with monitor equipment and then put the IV thingy into you. i was then taken into another anaesetic room where they put 3 syringes of stuff in, was pretty painless, and actually a nice feeling dropping off to sleep.... UNTIL I WOKE UP!
I woke up crying apparently, though i cant remember much. i remember them trying to give me oxygen but it was so painful that i kept taking it off, all i wanted to do was spit as my mouth was so gunky. after i was more-a-less awake they took me back to the ward where i was given more painkillers and left to sleep and rest etc for the night. i thought the pain was unbearable whilst i was in hospital, its getting worse and worse. i havent managed to eat anything (though i no you should so u dont get infection or something) and im finding it very hard to swallow, which is the worst part about taking my medicine. Im thinking about seeing if they have stronger painkilers as these seem to not be very good and im still in tons of pain and sleeping is even becoming difficult, the meds are making me drowsy but doesnt seem to be helping me sleep or feel less pain, just feel a bit wierd when standing up!!! Ear ache is also bad, im finding it hard when people and things are making noises, but i dont really think about it as my throat is in so much pain. This is just letting you know, reading a couple of stories off thie internet doesnt help, you need to look at the bad and good ones!

Hello I had my tonsils out four days ago and it was not what I expected,at the hospital they were nice and the procedure takes only 20 minutes and after the surgery I stayed in the hospital for only 3 hours then I went home . but the pain as long as you take your medicine its ok it hurts to swallow even my saliva but soups are ok just remember the more hydrated you are the faster you heal and less pain you will get trust me. just make sure you sip water all the time and take rest so you wont have complications and about hunger you wont be hungry because the antibiotic takes the hunger away . take care you'll be fine.
