I had my tonsils out Friday. It's now Wednesday and everything you described is exactly how I feel. The medicine makes me dizzy and sick, but the earaches and pain are so painful, it's oddly worth it. So you suggest drinking alot of water? I have been drinking powerade for days now.

Im 16 years old and I had my tonsils removed on the 21st of June. When I woke up from being out to sleep I started crying and I didn't know why but they told me it was normal and my pain on a scale 1-10 was about a 5, then they gave me pain medicines and it went down to a 2 in no time. I went home that day and just slept , the best advice I can give is to drink lots of water. When your throat drys out that's when it hurts the most ! & I think I'm over the worst part of my pain from my surgery, I hope. Because yesterday and the day before the pain was kicking my butt :/ but just take your medicine on time, even if you don't feel like you need it.

On day 3 and it's nothing but a bad sore throat. I'm 45 and have a medium threshold for pain. I think the differene you read about for pain is depending on pain meds you get. In some countries you don't get anything and that must be painful. I have liquid vicodin and I can definitely feel the difference between no meds and the meds.

I'm already back at work and feel fine.(I'm a progammer and can work from home, so being on a little pain meds is no big deal)

My biggest issue was the first night and having terrible nausea. Do not leave the surgery center without a prescription for nausea. I throw up every 30 minutes and couldn't keep anything down that first night (including my pain meds) and it was a painful, but no worse than a flu sore throat. Once I had the nausea medicine, I'm doing fine.As for food, I started eating normally after I got home. Eggs are great and soft. bread is good and so is clam chowder. I haven't noticed any restrictions with soft foods.

Im 13 and just got my tonsils out on monday,  I woke up early, they talked to me a lot like what they are going to do and whatnot.  I am not fond of needles and they make me faint, so they gave me a gasmask in the surgery room, and said they would insert the iv to keep me asleep when I was out.  Everything felt funny like im underwater listening to what people are saying above the water.  The egdes of my  vision got dark.  I woke up an hour later in the recovery room with a sore throat, and an oxygen mask on. I ate a popsicle and they inserted more pain meds in my iv  so I would not hurt as bad.  After an hour they rolled me into a room where I could lay down on a bed and watch t.v. for 3 more hours before they let me go home.  they took the i.v. out, I changed and they took me in a wheelchair to my moms car which she had driven up to the front while they were taking the i.v. out.  That night was not a very fun one.  Every hour I would wake up and have to drink water cuase my throat and mouth is dried out.  Every 4 hours I was awakened to take my meds which stung going down.  the 2nd day I began to hurt, and thinking it would go uphill I thought it would be a peoce of cake.  the nights after the first one were fine.  The 3rd day hurt a lot, and I had a fever.  Day 4 was even worse.  Today is day 5 and I fell exeptionally better compared to the previous days, but still feel sick.  I am sick of eating only popsicles, pudding, jello, and sugary stuff.  My tounge feels dead.  broth helps and i can manage to get down some noodles in chicken noodle soup too.  eggs, ramenoodles, and macncheese I choked on and cant eat, most food gets stuck in the holes where my tonsils used to be.  And I have horrid breath, how long should I expect for this to go away?  is there any way I can get rid of it?  and when will my scab form, and when will it fall off?

please get back to me as soon as you can.

Hi there,

I'm 25 and i had both my tonsils removed 6 days ago..it's THE worst pain i have EVER felt in my life!! For the past 6 days it has totally ruled every minuite of my day! For the first couple of nights it used to settle down with strong painkillers and an air difuser (keeps the room moist) but for the past 4 nights i have been awake every 2 hours in excruciating pain..It stings so much and brings tears to my eyes everytime i swallow. I havent been able to eat anything substantial for the past 4 days as everthing stings even ice cream and water! When i look down my throat a lot of the white (which i assume is scar tissue) has gone but has been replaced with loads of red, bloody open sores.....i'm not sure if this is part of the healing or if i have got an infection? To anyone who is about to have this procedure pls make sure you are prepared!! Painkillers are a MUST! although i must say even with them it barely touches the pain. I'm getting so fed up and down with being in constant pain so just bare in mind you will probably also experience this pain

My expereince at hospital

When i arrived at the hospital on the day of my op i was led to my bed on the ward. There i was given my hospital gown and i got changed. I wasnt allowed to eat anything for at least 8 hours before and also i wasnt allowed to drink anything up to 6 hours before. I wasnt even allowed to chew gum! Once i was ready the doctor came round and explained what was going to happen and that i was first on the list so i'd be taken down asap. I was warned that because i was an afternoon paitient i would probably have to stay in overnight. Once the anesthetists had been round to see me i was placed on the bed and they rolled my into theatre. I had an iv placed in my hand for fluids ext and then i was given the anesthetic....I was fine for around 5 mins and then i started feeling really hot and my face started to tingle and that was the last i remember. I woke up whilst being wheeled back onto the ward. I had been under for around 45 mins. When i first came to i couldnt really feel anything but i knew my throat was swollen. The nurses were lovely and after a couple of hours i had some jelly and ice cream. I was dosed up on morphine so i didnt really feel much pain although i started to set in half way through the night. I had a pretty good first day at hospital and really couldnt wait to get home. The next day i was  released from hosptial and sent home and that when all the fun began! (No more morphine to mask the pain) and since then its been a constant nightmare...... I cant wait for this to all be over! Good luck! :0(
