I recently had surgery to remove my tonsils as well as getting my adenoids removed and having a crooked ceptum on my nose removed. It has been the worst experience since day one.. This is not a walk in the park. Since i was let out of the hopsital the first day i had ear pain, the white mucus forming in the back of my thoat.. The pain has been unbearable. They did give me T3s for the pain but they barely help. DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!! it does help. you get this really horrible bad breath... and my brother keeps laughing at me cuz apperently my whole room stinks like it lol. im on day 5 and dont feel any better... it sucks

Hi. I'm 13 and I just found out I'm getting my tonsils out. I'm really scared cause my brother got them out and he cried. I know that's normal, but he NEVER cries. I mean he got hit in the head with a shovel...and he didn't cry!! So i'm afraid that I'm gonna wanna scream but I won't be able to of course. It's a few months away but I'm still really freaked out. And to make it worse, tylenol with codine keeps me awake so I'm afraid I won't be able to sleep. Plus I'm getting them out close to Thanksgiving, and I might not be able to eat the food! And I love thanksgiving food! But anyways, your stories have helped. So Thanks everyone!!! :-)

I just had my tonsils removed 5 days ago. I was only at the hospital to get me ready. IV and everything. I was really nervous, I wore my boyfriends sweatshirt to the hospital. I was so nervous that I started crying and I hugged his sweatshirt like a teddy bear lol. But the nerse gave me some medication that calmbed me down and I didn't feel so nervous. It actually made me fall asleep, then they let u say bye to family members, and nxt thing u know ur in the operation room. The only thing ur thinking about is this room looks wierd and cool. Then next thing you know they say they are gona give u a medicine that will put u to sleep. Then ur out like a light bulb and nxt thing u know u are waking up in teh recovery room. I went to Ohio Valley Medical Center and as soon as I woke up they gave me an orage medicine and sprite. They let me wake up, they gave me my clothes, took my IV out, left the room so I could get dressed and then the lady came in with a wheel chair and took me out to my moms van that she pulled up. They gave me a redish pink carnation and I was good to go. Just remember, for those who are scared and nervous...u arn't the only person who has gone through this. There are people all over the world who has gone through the same thing that u are. There's nothing to be affraid of, everything will turn out awesome!!!

I had my tonsils taken out on monday, it is now thursday. I am 15 and i wasn't scared at all before i went in, infact i was so relaxed and didnt think it was going to be as bad as what people have said. I woke up with slight pain in my throat but it got worse as time went on. You now have to stay in the hospital for 6 hours after the opp. I kept waking up in the night due to lots of pain but the nurses gave me lots of painkillers which slightly worked. I managed to eat some weetabix slowly before my dad came to pick me up. When i got home i rested and rested. It is best to just lay and watch tv and have naps everynow and then. I found the painkillers didnt work at all until i tried childrens calpol. That worked straight away. I took two sachets worth and within the next 20 minutes i felt so much better. I kept taking them every 4 hours and i was fine. I even managed to eat a roast dinner. It does hurt when i swallow but it is ment to, You must eat solid food other wise the white stuff on your throat wont go and it will get infected. I found that if i ate ice cream before i had a meal it helped alot.. even just a frozen frube or something. It's just the 2nd and 3rd days that are bad.. but it is all worth it in the end. BUT yes your breathe absolutely stinks!!!! :D

Honestly the pain is bearable. Take your meds on time. If they aren't strong enough, call something in. The pain will be the worst on the 4-6 day mostly it seems. But it was bearable for me, and i'm not good with pain. It was no worse than my worst strep throat. I stuck to apple sauce and soup for the first 3 days, and by day 4 i was starting really soft noodles and very moist cooked fish. Keeping up the eating and using your throat muscles is important, but I found if you dont swallow the throat doesnt hurt much. The ear pain is what gets most people..

Hi I had my tonsils out on 22.11 the procedure was straight forward, I arrived as a day patient at 8.00 went into theatre and was back on the ward by lunch. I did have a general, no catheter. I had to stay in hospital for 8 hours, which I slept for most of, however you will be asked to eat and drink a little and pass urine before you go home. To be honest I felt ok after my op it was day 3-5 when the pain and nausea kicked in so what ever you do dont give up those painkillers to early. Its day 10 for me and I am up and about after a rough weekend, eating is still a little sore along with drinking but it's got to be better than reoccurring tonsillitis and quinces!!

Just relax, it's not the worst you will have ever felt, good luck and remember you dressing gown and slippers that's all you'll need you will get a locker to put your personal items in.

Hello. I am 18 years old and had my tonsils out a week ago. It really isn't all that bad. Being an adult it sucks because you take forever to heal compared to kids. I never threw up from pain meds although I do recommend taking them with food. On top of getting my tonsils out I also had a big cyst under my eye removed and had to get a bone removed from my nose so now I have stitches goin up the inside of my nose, and I have bronchitis and thrush in my mouth. And I'm not even in dire pain. So do not worry. I'm not on a lot of meds just loratab, antibiotics, and these cough drop pills for thrush. I'm going to let you know one thing tho. Brush your teeth and tongue. I thought I could only brush my front teeth but that's how I got thrush. Eat jello, applesauce, broth. I'm already sick of broth tho. So I eat soups ramen noodles and suckers. You can't suck on them but licking them feels good when ur hurting. You are lucky because bein a kid you will heal so much faster and be in less pain. It may hurt the first 4 days maybe but then you will feel like a million bucks it is worth it I promise. As I patiently wait for my scabs to fall off 8-| :-D

I'm 18, and I got my tonsils taken out this past monday. I didnt think it woud hurt.....I couldnt have been more wrong. I went to the hospital and very quickly was taken to get my IV and get dress. After about an hour I was rolled back to the operation room. I never remember them telling me they were going to put me asleep, I just remember waking up in recovery. I was given some apple juice which I downed quickly and asked for more lol. I apparently had a wart on my uvula, which came back negative on a biopsy test (cancer test), so my pain was going to be worse than normally getting your tonsils out. The pain during the day isnt unbearable if you take your medicine every 4 hours. The worst is at night.

Nights are miserable and I dread going to sleep at night. Ive gotten a pattern, where I go to bed at midnight (because I dread going to sleep) and then wake up in between 2:30 - 3:30 in extreme pain. This is mainly because I sleep with my mouth open. I stay up for about an hour and then sleep until 6:30-7:30. So needless to say I have not gotten much sleep since getting my tonsils out. Im on day 6 and still in a good bit of pain, but as I said my situation was different than most.
