OK, I think you definitely need to hold off on the tampons. If your vagina hurts and smells, that warrants calling the doctor. It could be an infection of some kind and it is important you get it taken care of immediately. Tampons are the cause of a deadly syndrome called Toxic Shock Syndrome that is introduces byproducts of staph germs into the vagina and can lead to death if not treated. You didn't describe anything about running a high fever, which is a symptom of TSS, but you could still have an infection of some kind, especially if you have been sexually active.
