Ataxia, Addisons, & Diabetes are 3, I have found in my search to figure out what is happening to me. Currently my endocrinologist is testing me for 2. Also, there is Auto-Brewery syndrome, which causes the stomach to use excess yeast in the intestine to ferment carbohydrates and other sugary foods into alcohol. The sad thing here is people will actual smell as if they have been drinking and even fail breathalyzers, but they haven't!

The other night my daughter (young) and I were watching Three Coins in the Fountain, and toward the conclusion one female character has to much to drink. As she was stumbling in a following scene, my daughter cried out, "Mom she has Hoshimotos like you do!" I realized then what my husband had been trying to tell my doctors, and I quoted her in the office today, because this is not a symptom of Hoshimotos. This has become so bad for me, I ended up with a concussion, which can also mimic the appearance of being drunk; for example, I failed my field sobriety test in the ER during my post concussive syndrome dx.

Not only am I not allowed to drive currently, but I'm actually scared to drive without an answer, because a mos before I was dx with Hoshimotos, I had my first accident in 20+ years..... Yes the roads were icy and the weather bad, but that's why I was driving under the speed limit with the radio off. What if there is a medical reason I slipped off the road, couldn't get back on in time, and slammed into the telephone pole?

I am not a drunk. I know alcoholism well. I have known others to hide it from me well, only to be horrified when I discovered it..... so yes, I realize it's possible for some, but I also know that this can be very scary for someone going through this that isn't drinking, and it might just very well be a symptom of a medical condition that could be fatal if untreated.

I am VERY curious to see if any of your loved ones are Diabetic. My husband is, and has these exact behaviors. He also happens to have a problem with alcohol abuse. So for me, it is doubly difficult. There are definitely times, when I have been with him, or have had him blow a breath test, and he has absolutely NOT been drinking, yet acts like the worst drunk ever. He refuses to let me take him to get checked out, but he has finally consented to letting me test his blood sugar, and it is always way too high when I do. It also seems to occur after he has been really active all day. I really hope that someone gets an answer and posts it. This behavior is breaking up our marriage, and I fear for my safety at times.

My husband has this same problem. I am so grateful for your sharing because I'm not sure that it's the brewer's yeast problem. He used to drink so at first, this was my thought. The slurring of speech is the first noticeable symptom. I will share this info with him.

I am 17 years old. I have these problems too... I don't get like depressive. I get this roll of energy and so happy and I say a lot of weird things. I walk into walls and don't turn the knob or push the door when I come up to it, so I end up walking into it. Then not too long, maybe 10 minutes after, the effects will subside. The decrease is very rapid. My mood goes from a 10 down to like a calm state of a 3. I don't understand.

I was wondering if you ever found out what the problem was. My girlfriends husband is going thru the same thing and he was diagnosed with Auto Brewery Syndrome. Google it and best of luck!

I've been following this post very concerned about my husband who swore he wasn't drinking until I found his stash of alcohol.

My husbands been struggling for the past year and it took about six months to recognize the problem wasn't alcohol (although it clearly makes it worse). It appears to be driven from anxiety which is he is working on with a therapist. It continues but I feel like we are getting somewhere... In any event, for others looking for answers, auto brewery, still drinking, and/or anxiety/depression are all possible factors. Best wishes to you all!

I've heard of people who act drunk & will even blow a positive breathalyzer test due to their intestines producing too much yeast/fermentation. It's rare, but there is a name for it. To keep it under control it's best to go on a lo carb diet.
