I'm a tea addict. I could never get through an entire day without a cup of freshly-brewed loose green tea. The smell alone is enough to make my mouth water and the delicious sensation of fresh hot tea sliding down my throat is something that I always take time to relish during my tea break. But sometimes I do feel a slight headaches when I drink green tea. And I think this not a bad sign. It is just a side effect of the tea. Nevertheless I am continuing to drink it due to its tons of health benefits and is a great source of antioxidants. If you drink green tea today you MUST drink it tomorrow at the same time in order to prevent headache.

To make this clear, you have to drink green tea again 24 hours later.


I have been drinking green tea on a daily bases since I was 10. I'm 30 now.

If I miss one single day I suffer a sever headache.

Don't start drinking green tea if are not ready to have it regularly.. I mean daily.

Well, i sufer on the headaches as well, but i tend to think it is not a side efect as such. Green tea is known for its detox efects, and when you drink much of it, it just simply kicks in hard, and wants to get rid of all the "junk" we have in our bodies. Maybe the tea is a indicator.

I grew up drinking tea. When I was a teenager I started getting migraines about twice a year. They came more frequently the older I got. I finally figured out it was from tea when I started to drink ice tea every day. I was getting bad headaches and nausea almost every week. I think I developed an intolerance to tea over all those years. Now I can't even have one sip of tea without feeling the nausea in my stomach that comes before a migraine. I know it is from tea, so don't let anyone try to convince you that tea does not cause headaches. I stay away from all kinds of tea. I don't care what they say.

I started drinking green tea to reduce cholesterol levels about three weeks ago. I had severed burning headaches and nausea. I blamed it on some tablets I was taking, so stopped them and the green tea for a week. Drank green tea again this week and the burning headaches started again, so I am about to pour the jug of tea down the drain, throw the tea bags away, and swear never to touch the stuff again as long as I live! Detoxifying is nonsense - I went through the same years ago whilst on Herbalife - ended up having MRI, EEG. etc. because of the violent headaches. Took me months to recover - goodbye GREEN TEA! Not going through hell again, thank you.

Wow! It's funny (not ha-ha funny) how these remedies help some, but have the opposite affect on others. I say this because I've suffered with migraines for 30 years, and recently stumbled upon organic green tea (tea bags) as my migraine remedy. I drink at least 2 cups a day (I let the tea bag brew for 10 minutes). I suspect these migraines that the tea helps are hormone related because prior to the headache, I feel a wave of depression. After drinking the tea, my mood lifts within 30 minutes or so. I have many migraine triggers. Some of these triggers are sugar (sometimes), stress, too much sleep, not enough sleep, strong scents, over heating, grapes, certain foods and beverages, and as mentioned, hormone related issues. Sometimes, I need to drink 4-5 cups of tea to stave the wave of depressions. For me, I'd rather drink the tea than take medication. For those who get migraines from green tea, are you using a sweetener? Instead of sugar, I use stevia because too much sugar or even honey can trigger a headache for me. Try to stay away from anything with aspartame or splenda. I assume that stevia is healthy, but you may want to research that too. If you do try green tea again, you may want to drink it plain (without sweetener). I hope you find a remedy for yours soon!

So glad it wasn't just me imagining it. Green tea and migraines seemed a strange association, but it has been happening with me also. Never had migraines till I recently started drinking green tea, and when I've been too busy to sit back and enjoy a cup of green tea then they go away. I'll definetly forgo the green tea to alleviate the headaches :-)

I have heard varying reports about green tea - some for, some against. I guess it depends a lot on our body types. I have had problems with numerous drugs for hypertension, cholesterol, etc. so have opted to eat sensibly etc. in recent years and the problems have resolved themselves without meds. Herbal remedies and vitamin B have given me problems as well, so at 65 years of age, by now I know that I must avoid a lot of things. I don't touch aspartame or other sweeteners as they also result in bad headaches. Many people of my age are on chronic meds for one condition or another. I only use an asthma prophylactic and will keep off drugs as the side effects are utterly debilitating. One wonders just how common these problems are - surely I'm not the only one who cannot take a large variety of chronic meds?? ?

I have found this site to be most helpful. I have never been a tea drinker. At Christmas time I decided that I would have a cup of Sleepy Time Tea before bed each night. On Boxing Day I had the worst migraine I have ever had. I had headaches for the next six days. I stopped drinking tea and the headaches stopped. I eat well and do not drink caffeine. I am now drinking hot water with lemon.

Ive been getting aureal migrains too. Happens most when I have stopped taking green tea for a couple of days.

I think there's a corelation between migraines and green tea. I've experienced it to in retrospect I realize.

For those who get migraines, ask your doctor about the medicine Relpax. I've never had such migraine relief as with that medication when a migraine strikes.

Also, sleep deprivation can be a migraine trigger (it is for me!)

I also take Magnesium (500 mg), CoEnzyme Q10, and Vitamin B12 daily for migraine prevention. I believe it also lessens a migraine's severity when it strikes.

I thought I was all alone here but nope.. I get a monster headache each time I take any capsule that contains the Green Tea extract. I will note though that this does not happen when I drink green tea.

Hello,

I read in one article that the Green Tea side effects such as gas, nausea, heartburn, abdominal pain, dizziness, headache, and muscle pain are caused by low quality green tea. And those are just "minor side effects", it is just like allergies that.. people has different reaction to green tea. Just a simple advice, you can get some green tea sampler first that way if you don't enjoy or you don't feel right drinking one tea, you still have other teas you can try!

Like many others I stumbled on this thread while googling for any link between migraine and green tea. I've tried green tea a few times over the years and on several occasions have developed an aura migraine after a couple of successive days of drinking 1-2 cups a day. I'm not 100% sure, but I strongly suspect it's the green tea as no other variables have changed and I don't get migraines very often as a general rule. I drink black tea and coffee regularly with no apparent problems. I don't subscribe to the detox view either - if that were the case surely people would be getting migraines from other antioxidant-rich foods. I'd be more inclined to suspect some sort of tannin in green tea that is degraded by the black tea fermentation process.
Very interesting to see so many others with the same experience.
