i'm not a fan of green tea i hate the grassy taste but i was recommended white tea - which supposedly has even higher anti-oxidant amounts than green tea (sans the bad taste) and i used to be able to drink it without incident but recently like maybe in the last 5 months, everytime i drink it i get migraines. the left front half of my brain strats to throb - like someone is stabbing it with an ice pick or something. ugh! and like all of you, i can't find an answer online...

Yeah,  Thank you soo very much for this forum.  I am 44 yrs old and have never gotten migraines until a few weeks ago.  I couldn't figure out what was causing them.  I even went to a specialist.  Then it just dawned on me.  I started drinking this green tea junk.

I am 62 yrs old female, I discovered I have migraine when I was around twenty six. I thought I had a heart attack at that time, because I felt dumb to one side of my head and the numbness stretched all the way to the side of my arm and to my fingers. My vision was impaired things appeared as if they were crawling and then disappeared. The pupils of my eyes were of different sizes. I could hammer my fingers and I would not feel a thing.I was rushed to the hospital from my office and after all the tests, I was told it was symptom of a migraine. I did not know what a migraine was. Mine was the classic migraine type, imagine. I am a tea drinker and I enjoy all kinds of tea. To cut the story short, I consulted with a Chinese herbalist because of the headache. When it comes, I see aura and colour in the room, vomiting and vertigo will follow, all very scary. The herbalist told me I was drinking the wrong kind of tea and eating the wrong kind of vegetables! I was told that drinking green tea will trigger my migraine, any form of green tea should be avoided. My worst culprit was the Chinese tea named Tie Guan Yin, second would be Jasmin and Oonlong tea. I stopped drinking those since then. I only drink black tea now. My recent episode of migraine just happened a few days ago when I had the tea called Darjeeling Earl Grey with my son. ( loose tea ) I did not know that green tea was in the mix. So it went again! I just want to share my experience with you because green tea is not good for all people. You have to know your tea. Take care!

I have tried caffeinated and de caffeinated green tea, both give an instant headache. I have been caffeine free for nearly a year now so I don't think it is a detox headache. So glad this is not my imagination.

Having suffered from instant headaches after drinking both caffeinated and decaff green tea, I mentioned it to a friend who told me green tea is positively NOT good for those with low blood pressure. I do indeed have low blood pressure. It's beneficial for those suffering from high blood pressure.

I gave up fast food and pop last May.  I started drinking green tea over the summer and loved it.  I was trying to find something else good to drink besides water cuz that can get so boring.  Well, needless to say the headaches began and came on suddenly and fierce.  They got worse upon exertion.  I never had this pain before.  I went to the doc and after 5 different MRIs they concluded that nothing was wrong with me!  They had to rule out blood clots etc.  Well, recently I have cut back on my tea because the weather has changed and I am not as thirsty.  I noticed my headaches had completely disappearred!  I thought about the tea instantly so I did any experiment on myself.  I drank the tea again and within a day or so the extreme headaches came back! Wow, I am so disappointed because I really love to drink green tea and get all the benefits but I am sure now it was the tea all along that caused my extreme head pain!  What else can I drink that is healthy for me and tastes good too?  I don't like hot drinks either so it has to be a cold drink.  I am still off of soda pop and fast food, and want to keep it that way!

Every person is unique. What causes migraine/headache is caffeine, a main component of green tea. I hope decaf green tea can ease the symptom.

I went off tea, red wine, cheddar cheese years ago. I was getting headaches and came across an article in Prevention magazine that said that Tea, red wine and cheddar cheeses cause some people to get headaches because their body reacts to them, possibly tanins. They cause a constriction of the blood vessels in the neck/lower head. As soon as I stopped consuming those things, I had no more headaches.

Tannins are compounds contained in green tea that bind with non-heme iron in the body. Nonheme iron is the type of iron that is contained in plants and iron-fortified foods. It is not as easily absorbed in the body as heme iron, however most iron in the diet is typically nonheme iron. Tea expert Lindsey "Vee" Goodwin of Vee Tea notes that the tannins in green tea can form insoluble bonds with iron in the body, rendering the iron indigestible. According to Goodwin, "The typical decrease in iron absorption from a meal with a cup of tea in clinical studies is approximately 30-60 percent." This interferes with iron absorption, which can lead to iron deficiency anemia. Iron deficiency anemia can cause feelings of weakness, shortness of breath, irritability, headaches and irregular heartbeat. This is from the livestrong website. Don't beleive the detoxification snakeoil salesmen. Research and beleive in scientific fact.

Headaches and nausea-like symptomps are probably related to muscle relaxatory effects of green tea. It causes the dilation of vessels in neck and head (headache) and in kidney (urination), furthermore the external esophageal spinctner is relaxed, so you feel like vomiting, also green tea affects your nicotinic receptors so the gastric acid production is increased.

I have determined that it is the Sleepytime Decaf Green Tea by Celestial which is giving me major headaches. The kind that make you not want to do anything but take a Tylenol and lay down. I rarely get headaches, but I can drink a cup of this tea, which I was drinking to fight insomnia, and for two days my head will ache like someone beating me with a sledge hammer. Havent drank it in a couple of weeks and again had a cup last night and the head banging is back. Never again. I have a unopened box I am donating to someone, somewhere.

I find your comment completely interesting. I too have headaches after drinking tea but only the most frequently when I drink Celestial Seasonings.

I decided that I was going to try drinking 2 cups of green tea a day. I started last night to try it for the first time and woke up this morning to a horrific migraine followed by the usual sickness I have with it. By the sounds of these comments this would be the cause as I have stayed away from any of the other causes for a while now.
