I have just been told that I have Multiple Sclerosis and I have a big question for other patients. What are the benefits of starting aggressive MS therapy such as betaseron early, versus waiting until the symptoms get worse? Which group of patients has a better long term outcome? What has been your decision, and how do you feel about that?
That is one debate that is still ongoing, I am afraid! It is still unclear whether or not early treatment of the multiple sclerosis symptoms with aggressive drugs stops the progression of the disease later on or not. Unsurprisingly, pharmaceutical companies tend to say that it does, but evidence is unclear either way, so you need to make your own decision.
