Hello.
I was prescribed with amitripyline two years ago for treating my pain issues. With time, I gained few pounds, but that hadn't bothered me too much. Then, several months ago, my weight rose rapidly and I got concerned. My conclusion was that weight gain problem is from amitriptyline usage. I decided to quit it, so I started to reduce my dosage. First symptoms I suffered from withdrawal were depression and heavy headaches, but two weeks ago I got some bad nausea and that's the worst part for me right now. It's terrible, especially when I wake up in the morning. It seems that every day is worse than before. Is this normal symptom for amitriptyline withdrawal? If so, how long will nausea last?
Could anyone possibly shed some light on this for me? Thank you in advance.
Hello, David.
Weight changes (gain or loss) are common side effect of tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline.
Amitriptyline withdrawal should be slow because, as I can see, you are long-time user. The longer is the period of use, side effects are more severe.
Nausea is one of the usual side effects. It can last up to 3-4 weeks, depending on state of organism and period of use, as I said in previous paragraph.
You can consult with your doctor about nausea and get some antimuscarinics to help you with gastro issues.
Hope this will help.
Cheers!
