Hello, Jrock.
Isotretinoin, also known by its brand name Accutane, is a medication primarily used for the treatment of severe acne. It belongs to a class of drugs called retinoids and works by reducing the production of oil in the skin, preventing clogged pores, and reducing inflammation.
Fordyce spots, on the other hand, are small, raised, pale or skin-colored bumps that can appear on the lips, genitals, or other areas of the body. They are a type of ectopic sebaceous gland and are considered a normal variant rather than a medical condition. Fordyce spots are harmless and do not require treatment unless they cause significant distress or cosmetic concerns.
If you are experiencing positive results with isotretinoin in reducing the appearance of Fordyce spots, that is indeed encouraging for you. It's important to note, however, that isotretinoin is not a recognized or FDA-approved treatment specifically for Fordyce spots. Its primary use is for severe acne.
It's also worth mentioning that individual responses to treatments can vary, and what works for one person may not work for another. Additionally, Fordyce spots are considered a normal variation of the skin and typically do not require treatment unless they cause significant cosmetic concerns or distress.
