I wish I would have looked for this site sooner in my recovery. I'm 21, I got my tonsils out last wednesday and have been a miserable mess ever since. No one understands just how bad i feel. Yesterday on day 5 was the worst. My sister forced me to eat some smoothie and tears started pouring down my face. I managed to eat some soup at hand (cold) with mini round noodles and mini chicken pieces and that helped alot. Mornings are the worst I end up waking up at midnight, 245, 400, then 530 and usually just stay away. After sipping on water for a while and chewing some gum my spit thins out and i feel better. Today was the best i have felt this whole week and tomorrow i plan on going back to work. I got sick off the hydrocodine so the doctor prescribed me tramadol with i can only take at night because it makes me tired. you guys hang in there and im glad that you posted because without you all i would have felt alone in this battle to eat food and feel better again.

Hi, my daughter had her tonsils taken out on Friday the 3rd and it has been the worst experience of my life. She's only 4 so it's been really hard to make her understand what she is going thru. If I'd known it was going to be this hard on her I never would have done it. She was sick to her stomach for the 1st 3 days and would only take small sips of water. I was afraid that she would dehydrate. She refused to let me give her any type of pain medicine. I thought she was afraid to swallow because it would hurt, but when she was finally able to talk she told me that it was because she didn't want to throw up. She finally started drinking water on Monday and had her 1st bowl of ice cream on Tuesday. It's been so hard watching her suffer. The doctors said it was easier on kids than adults but I'm afraid I'd don't agree with that at all. Everyone says that I'll be glad I had this done for her in the long run, but I'm having a hard time convincing myself that I did the right thing. This may not help anyone that is already suffering, but it has helped me.

Hey! reading all your posts is so useful. After lots of bouts of tonsillitus I am finally having them removed next Fri (24th) under my bupa cover. I'm taking notes of what you have advised to buy, could anyone help me in the direction of the ice/cool packs you refer to? I cant find them, online they are all sport ones or expensive disposable ones. Appreciate your help. I am 24yrs old and have booked 2.5weeks off work - as a Communications Manager talking is a necessity and i dont think i will be up for much of that for quite a while!!!

Hope you are all feeling much better, just think no pain no gain and we are curing ourselves for the long term. I just dont want this ruining my wedding next year as it did on my engagement :-( so i will be thinking happy bridal thoughts to get me through lol

im on my 3rd day of having my tonsils out, im 19, and im in the worst pain of my life, its SO painful to swallow water even i havent ate anything in 4 days( because i wasnt allowed to eat 24 hours b4 my surgery).. my best advice to you is to drink water as much as u can no matter how painful it is.. and limit your swallowing.. what ive done is the spit that gathers in my mouth i cant seem to swallow it without crying it hurts so bad so i spit it in a tissue, im on codine.. and it had made me constipated so i have a huge stomach ache and everything else aches on me.. for the 1st 2 days i threw up every so often even no there was next to nothing in my system. make sure u take ur medacine and get ur rest.. because if ur on codine .. it makes u REALLY dizy and nautious.. and dont move around alot ... the less the better i find.. today being my 3rd day i find that the mucus in the back of my throat is soooo thick and my stiches are jabbing my tongue.. everything hurts in my mouth all the way down to my neck basically. and dont talk either! i havent said a word in 3 days.. i write everything down. i read in one of the last posts that if u chew gum is thins the mucus.. im going to try that and let anyone know if its worked for me. hope this has helped! good luck!

I'm on day 8 of recovery. They made me eat a piece of toast before I left the hospital. Hurt a little. When I got home that day I started eating warm noodles. By day 4, I started eating whatever I wanted. Its day 8, and my throat is still a little tender. The pain is the worst in the mornings. The pain med my doctor prescribed is called roxicet. I works awesome for about 3.5 hours but you can only take it every 4 hours. Now on my 8th day, I am about out of my second bottle of it, but I dont think I will need another. Am I an exception, because I don't believe it is the worst thing I have ever felt. By the way, everything I had done at one time includes: tonsilectomy, adnoidectomy, uvioloplasty, and septoplasty.

I had mine out on April 30th and have been feeling a little better each day. But today, I had to spit and noticed there was a little blood in my saliva. Is this normal????

A little blood is ok, it's when it's flowing that it is bad. If it's a drop or two and it stops when you chew some ice or drink cold water then there is nothing to worry about. You need to worry if you are vomiting blood or you taste blood and you look in the mirror and the wounds are bleeding profusely. If it doesn't stop in a few minutes call your Dr or go to the hospital. But a little blood in your saliva or in your nasal mucus is normal.

So my tonsils came out Wednesday the 6th - the surgery was super fast. I woke up I could talk and felt 110% - I had to stay at surgical center for 4 hours for observation . . . . . by 5pm at night I was balling because my throat and ears felt like they were on fire. Doc prescribed liquid vicodin which did help kind of numb the pain and help me sleep. Well starting last night my uvula has swollen x's 5 - I think it is making me not be able to swallow. I have to try like 3 or 4 times to get a sip of water down and even then it goes up my nose - owww. Trying to get the pain meds in is crazy. That hurts sooo bad, I coughed most of it out at last dose. This sucks - I would rather be really sick a few times every year. Ow ow ow . . .

I am 19 years old and I had my tonsils and adenoids removed two days ago. I have had very little pain throughout my recovery. my throat is sore, in the sense that the muscles feel sore, but that is about it. Drinking cold water with ice cubes feels good, I have been taking hydrocodone (vicodin) about every four hours. I have slept through the night without waking up to take the medicine though. My only complaint is sometimes I have a thick cough and I'm very hungry because the liquid foods aren't satisfying. My tonsils were swollen because I had mono my freshman year in college and that was hell. However I already feel like i have more energy and I'm glad I got them removed. I just can't wait to eat real food again!

I am 26 and just got my tonsils and adenoids removed yesterday. I have had problems my whole life and finally opted for surgery. I've also been dealing with those nasty tonsil stones. I woke up soo groggy yesterday and my tongue hurt so bad and still does, but the pain is not that bad for me. I've been drinking a lot of water and apple juice. I was able to get down jello and some scrambled eggs this morning (minus the cheese and ketchup, hehe) My pain level is probably a 3.5 now. I had a very hard time sleeping though b/c I can't completely breath thru my nose yet, so I sleep with my mouth open but it becomes so very dried out. I miss real food!

I'm on my third day, this is way worse than wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth were a breeze. I can't verbally talk without it hurting, swallowing sucks. I hate sleeping because waking up makes me cry from my throat hurting so bad. I cant eat anything other than ice cream, while thats good and all I miss real food. This surgery sucks major ass, I'm seventeen and usually can take about everything you can throw at me but this sucks. is there anything besides ice cream and jello that doesnt hurt. Mac n cheese failed.
