i had my tonsils out 2 weeks today and im still recovering!
im 20years old and suffered from tonsiltis all the time my tonsils were so big they were touching either side and finding it hard to swollow was a BIG problem.
when i went to the doctor to decide to have them removed i was relieved .Until i had the operation and relised was this pain worth it.
The 1st day wen i had come out of hospital was ok it was painfull but nothing to what it is now.i woke up alot of time during the night which was the times i was due to tak more medication but the hospital had sent me home with tablet form which i cant understand wen u cant swollow!
2nd day i was in agony i was screaming with pain not been able to eat, drink or swollow was awful i then had to be transfered back to hospital and they kept me in over night to monitor me by putting me on antibiotics and fluids so i was getting dehydrated.they also sent me home with liquid medicine which was a big help even though swollowing was impossible.
3rd day was abit better ans they could se progress so the then decided to discharge me!the pain was bad still btu i could deal with this until
day 4 and this was the worst day for me the pain was awful i have had a tattoo befor and my apendix out and i would go through both of this agian then ever go through getting your tonsils out!
on this day i was scared i would have to go back into the hospital so i went to the doctors the doctor had a look at my throat telling me i had an infection !omg
so i had to go back into hospital for 2 nights i throught this would never get better worst experience of my life and i really do wish i never had them out now as i would rather have tonsilis all time then this !
im still not 100% not forgetting on sunday 10days after the operation i am sick and had a bad tummy since!
everyday now i wake up and think that it cant get any worse lets hope im on the mend now.
good luck to anyone that is an adult and is having these out THINK befor you go ahead plzzzz!!!!!!

i just had my tonsils removed on monday and the worst pain was when i woke up from the surgery and also in the morning when i wake up. but once i got home from my surgery i actually, surprisingly felt really good, my ears just hurt a little thats all. but the second day (today) like i said it hurt the most when i woke up, and its just more of a sore throat today, nothing else, but we will see how it gets as the week goes on, but good luck to anyone whois having the surgery done, stay positive.

Hi folks,
I'm exactly a week into my surgery and besides removing my tonsils i also had a metal small 'T' like device inserted in my tongue. Anyhow, pain was tolerable first 2 days but I believe it was due to anesthia still in my system. Then it got bad & worse. Well long story short started with a liquid pain killer called Zamicet & moved up to hydrocod and finally at oxycodo due to pain increasing almost every day. So much so that i wasnt able to swallow anything at one point so I was getting dehydrated and ran off to ER twice in 3 days. Pain has somewhat been a bit better.
Well I wanted to ask people here about the issue that I didnt get to hear too much of from other posts. Does anyone recall or going thru the ability of not able to sleep? And not so much the pain but the fact that either getting choked constantly on sylivia or tongue blocking airway? Since surgery I havent been able to sleep but 30 mins a night. i have tried to sleep in every postion I can think of but no can do. Still waking up as soon as I dose off which a choking sensation. Please if anyone has an experience or idea that has worked for them reply to this post. Is it normal, what has your doctor said. Most post say people did sleep or had issues with sleep due to pain. In my case is a bit different . Thanks.

So I haven't had my tonsils removed but I think it will be done within two weeks. I'm 25 and from all the posts it looks like I'm going to be in unbearable pain after the surgery, but does anyone have any suggestions as to help with the pain or sleeping even a little?

Cold stuff i.e ice cream doesnt work at all but i have been eating "rough" foods from day 1 as they said it would help -is this also true??
good luck to anyone about to have it - best things ive found so far to help is chewing gum and warm towel on throat..x

It's now been 7 days since I had my tonsils out and the pain just gets worse! I'm 30 and really wish I had this done years ago. I haven't bothered with the ice cream diet as the hospital said to eat normal foods. However the pain is that intense today I can't eat a thing and am even struggling to sip cold water. I dread going to sleep at night as the mornings are just shocking. I know it's a means to an end but I have thought to myself why did I bother!!!!!!
Good luck to anyone having this procedure!!!!

i am 17, i had my tonsils out on Tuesday. The day i got them out it hurt so bad. I just remember waking up and crying and getting lots of paid meds and i was asleep i think i slept that whole first day. Day 2 wasnt to bad pain meds every four hours. I was forced to eat and drink because everyone is worried about me losing weight (im already 20 pounds under weight) so being forced to eat just made it worse. Ive tried talking a few times, No one can understand what i say. Day 3 i just felt sick and the taste in my mouth is driving me insane. I have tried brushing my teeth and getting the taste and yuck out but it just hurts and i cant get it out. I think thats the worse for me. Day 4 i didnt take my pain meds and it really showed it hurt, like i didnt know how much they were doing for me. Taking the pain meds on an empty stomach was making me sick. I havent slept the last two nights and i get little naps during the day but then i wake up feeling like im choking. Today is day five and i tried not taking my pain meds its let to gagging and me crying. if i knew how bad this would have hurt i would have never done it, people keep telling me its worth it and i highly doubt that.

Just got my tonsils removed today and besides hurting when I swallow I feel fine. Some suggestions, jello feels really good and is quite easy to get down if your looking for something soft to eat. Apple sauce was also a great choice as it also felt fine going down. Its really really important to keep drinking even though its painful. The more dehydrated you are the more pain you are going to be in. Do not let all these horror stories get to ya, they surgery is under an hour and for me personally I woke up was alert and asked the nurse for a magazine because i was bored. Ill keep yall posted but so far so good. I even slept fine all day! granted that might be backwards ill take it where I can get it. And these posts where people are eating things such as chip, and other hard sharp foods stop! Its a horrible idea, soft food and soft foods only!

hello im on day 12 of having my tonsils out and let me tell you i went from the frying pain into the fire. It started off great with the pain meds i didnt feel a thing but i also have a very high pain tolerance. I started to eat regular food around day 6 and by day 9 i was out with my friends and things were going well. Then on day 11 when i was back at school i cleared my throat to spit and walked over to the trash can and i spit up blood and i could feel my wound in the back open. I thought, "what the f**ck" and ran to the bathroom and blood started pouring out into the sink and eventually stopped. i went to the doctor and he said this only happens to 5% of people so im thinking juuust great. So he says if it happens again call him and i might have to go to the emergency room. Well sure enough the next morning at 6am i wake up with my throat bleeding a lot more than the first time. So i run the to bathroom and im losing a lot of blood and im starting to feel light headed so i drink cold water like the doc said until the bleeding stopped. i called the doctor and was about to pass out and he said if it happens again go right to the emergency room and they would perfrom surgery on my throat. The doctor was baffled and im pissed off.

I'm 17 years old, and had my tonsils removed on monday the 10th of may, today is saturday the 15th.
I'd been having bad tonsilitus for a few years, and as i study performing arts, it was having a detromental effect on my singing. Also, no drama college would accept me as this was such a lilability, therefore, i decided the best option was to have my tonsils removed. I never had tonsilitus as a child, only from about age 12 onwards, which was unfortunate, as i wish i had of had this surgery many years ago. On waking up from the operation i was very suprised that i was not in extreme pain, i ate a mcdonalds chip and was able to speak fine, i thought this was excellent as was wondering about what all the fuss had been over.
I realised the next day this was because i was high on the pain med. It is now day 6 after the operation and i can say it just seems to be getting worse and worse, after reading these posts i realise that many people are on the same boat as me. I have been prescirbed very mere, over the counter pain killers, no anti biotics or steroids, paracetamol, codine and another drug is all i have. There is a period of about two hours in the middle of the day, from about 3pm-5pm in which the swelling decreases and i feel able to eat, yesterday i managed some pizza, and cereal, it dosen't even hurt eating at this time, which i find very bizar, as today, an hour after eating pasta, i was lying in agony again, swolloing is excruciatingly painful, at the start is just felt swollen but now, when i swollow it feels as though tiny little knives are stabing into my throat.
My tounge is swollen, making speech almost impossible, i can't handle water, everyone says it's the best thing but it is so painful, i have found great comfort in luke warm tea as i find that the heat actually helps my throat. Yawning & hiccups are very problematic also, due to the fact that the soft pallet is raised a lot during surgery, i find i am yawning all the time, trying to bite my tounge to prevent the yawning just increases the swelling.
I woke up at 5am this morning in tears, the pain was unbelievable, it has made me wish i never had this operation, the doctors said it would be bad but nothing like this. In the past i have had various piercings and root canal, i have went through these without a breeze and generally have quite a high pain tolerance. My friends are all out tonight and i really believed i'd have been able to go out just for the company, i can't even stand for too long, i feel lightheaded and dizzy due to not eating. i cannot wait till this is over and i can just STUFF A SUBWAY FOOTLONG DOWN ME AND ENJOY A PINT WITH FRIENDS! Until then, i have to bear this torture. Good luck to anyone on the same boat as me!

I got my tonsils out ten days ago. I literally just started feeling better today. I also had my adenoids out and there were two abcesses the doctor found that he took out as well. I would NEVER have gone through with surgery if i had known how difficult the recovery was going to be. On top of all of the swelling in my throat, my tongue was SO swollen! It made talking so much harder than it already was. I still have marks in the sides of my tongue from it pushing up against my teeth. I didn't eat anything for the first week. I started eating soup after that but i was constantly hungry and miserable. i didnt eat popsicles or anything it hurt too bad to swallow..
the pain medicine i was on was called roxicet, which is the lowest dose of percacet (sp?). It was prescribed for me to take every four hours but i wasn't making it and ended up taking it every 3. Actually, talking to people the few days after my surgery made my throat feel a lot better, i highly recommend it! However, if you are still in pain or just got the surgery done, hang in there! Honestly i just woke up one morning and felt so so much better.
i think it might have been better to have a sore throat a few times a year...
