hey, i'm a 17 year old male and just had a tonsillectomy about 9 days ago, and would like to share my experience, which was a lot easier than what i've heard. my surgery was on the 11th of november, and was doing it to get rid of tonsil stones. this was the first surgery of my life, so of course i was nervous about the anaesthesia and all but other than that i've had a positive attitude. i read these forums for days, and thought about the pain i was going to be in, but i just kept on thinking positive. surgery was over before i knew it began. i must say, days 1, 2, and 3 were the worst for me. i had regular liquid paracetomol for painkillers, which i used on days 1, 2, and 3. the pain was so bad, and i managed to have only tiny sips of water the first day. second day was better, i ate some eggs, and managed to down a significantly bigger amount of liquids this time. by the 3rd day, even though i was eating, i wasn't eating enough. all the medicine made my stomach nauseous so i decided to stop taking painkillers. i haven't taken ANY medicine since day 3, and have since been fine. every day i got better, and everyday i increased my eating amount. i think the key to this was eating. it allowed nutrition into your body, which helped with the healing process. i ate burgers, hotdogs, chinese, soup, eggs, french toast, jello, fried rice, basically a pretty normal diet, just staying away from all the crunchy foods. the pain was very bearable, and right now just feels like a normal sore throat. i did have some mild ear pain, and the doctor said it was referred and pain and was normal. as for the scabs, they go down as i eat so it still feels normal. so, my experience was pretty easy, considering the info i've read here. hopefully everyone does have a easy recovery and i hope for the best :-).

Hello, i'm Almost 16 years old and i had my tonsils taken out exactly a week from today. I've had several surgeries in the past and i have recently been diagnosed with IBS and lactose intolerance and i'm always use to pain but this is terrible! i've barely eatten anything in the past week. the day i got it done, i thought it wasn't so bad also, the next couple of days i was with my boyfriend and such every night. but now i'm home and still can't eat or drink. I refuse to eat or drink anything because it burns like when you have a cut and put germ-ex on it. the pain medicine i've been on doesn't work at all. i was first but on amoxicillin because i can't take certain medicines due to my IBS. it didn't work at all and was just nasty. yesterday, i passed out in the kitchen and it's just getting worse. yesterday the doctor put me on oxycodone and it still wasn't working. my mom called today and he told me to double the dose of it. i'm hoping i'll start recovering tomorrow. Thanksgiving is in two days and i'd like to actually eat real food! good luck to everyone else and i hope your procedures aren't as bad.

19 yrs old and on day 3 of recovery. Best advice is to drink cold water and put ice on your ears if they hurt. Right after taking medicine is the easiest to drink the water cause at the end of the first dose it starts hurting again. Try to get up occasionally (go shower or get up to get more water). But spend most of the day resting. Try not to "baby" your throat too much. It is going to hurt but try eating rough foods as soon as you can. I have already eaten crackers and toast. Don't be afraid to vomit. Nausea is the first side effect of roxocet. (I already threw up twice). It won't affect your healing so don't panic. I did stop my pain meds after for the day and got a prescription for tylenol with codeine. The tylenol barely helps so I am now alternating between the tylenol and roxocet. As I am writing this I can feel the roxicet kicking in and making me tired. Fight this for a little bit so you can drink as much water as possible. Eating chicken broth is recommended and although it hurts, it will make you feel so much better after. I have found that tea is soothing for me. Has to be about room temperature though. Eat lots and lots of popsicles cause it works as an ice pack for your throat. My top recommendations are to drink as much water as possible, rest, and TRY to eat. Doctors are more concerned if you are drinking rather than eating so drink, drink, drink! Hope everyones recovery goes smoothly! I know its painful but hang in there and be relieved that you won't have sore throats anymore!

I am 20 years old and i just got my tonsils removed four days ago. My reason for needing them removed was because I was having sore throats and my tonsils would swell up and puss would come out of them every morning, nasty I know. So November, I finally decided I had enough, went to the doctor, he put me on an antibiotic- which DIDNT work. In december I scheduled surgery. I didnt feel a lot of pain after i woke up, just really dizzy. Im going on day four and i still feel light headed, im taking liquid lortabs. Its hard to eat because its hard to swallow but i have been eating soup, ice cream, potatoes and stuff. Mainly i am just trying to sleep this off. Today I have puked twice. I wouldnt say that surgery was a bad choice, I couldnt bare to wake up every morning picking puss out of my tonsils. I will take this torture for the next few days if it means never having to do that again lol

Im 19 and had my tonsils out last tuesday to the 29th of march so its been a week and 2 days and you know what i dont know what the big deal is. As soon as i woke up from the operation i was starving i managed to munch down a cheese sandwich. Give it due a couple days later it was painful but i think thats because i threw up several times in the night which was painful!!! but the pain after that is no where near as bad as all the tonsillitis attacks ive had in the past. Day three and i was eating normally. Day 4 i was out of the house because i felt so bored as i didnt feel ill in myself jst abit of pain. I agree foods are still tasting odd and im like 9 days in so i hope that goes soon and i still have like yellow/white mucus stuff where my tonsils used to be. =/

hi.. I'm currently 14 years old and i just got my tonsils and adenoids out on Wednesday the 13th of April. I woke up after the surgery completely fine, feeling no pain and being able to talk, although i did feel some roughness on the back of my throat my doctor said it was normal. Days have gone by and not only has the pain gotten tremendously worse, but i have not talked in over 5 days. Last night i was laying in bed curious of what it would be like to try to talk, the first thing i said was hi and immediately choked on my uvula due to the swelling. As i tried to speak i noticed my jaw was not only killing me of pain at the time, but disagrees to open as much as it used to. I don't know if this from it having to be clamped open, or for being closed for a good 5 days. The day i got the surgery i weighed in at 123, due to yesterday I have already lost a spectacular amount of 8 pounds and i feel great, although i look forward to eating normal and solid foods. Throughout the recovery i had noticed many different symptoms, the first one i would do anything to lose is the ear pain. It's horrible and feels like i am actually having someone shove knives in my ears. I can honestly say i have never felt such pain in my life. another thing i had been going through was the constant back pain which started the day after my surgery and continued to the 3rd or 4th day after. I realized laying on a heating pad helped it, but as soon as there was nothing underneath of my back the pain began again. The night after the surgery i was suffering from horrible stomach pains. My mom told me it was happening because i was hungry, and i was, but i later found that i couldn't sleep because the pain was so bad. I was up from 11 pm to 9 am and around 4:00 am i found myself throwing up. I threw up 3 times, one after another, and it hurt my scabs horribly. I have also suffered from a constant cough and tickle in my throat, my mom had called the surgeon and he said this was occurring due to the tube they had put down my throat for me to breath during the surgery. I would like to know if any of this is normal. If anyone is noticing the same symptoms or has any resolution for this problem please feel free to answer !!

i got my tonsils out last friday, im 16 and im fine! i went in to surgery took about 15 minutes i was really scared but it was not bad at all! it just hurts when you wake up but then they give you medicinde and you feel fine. after the surgery i was just really tired i sleep at least 6 hours in the day and sleep all night.  but the medicine they give you will make you nauseous espically when you take it on an empty stomach. Its day 5 for me and i feel fine i go out with my friends to the mall and everything i feel fine, just tired! its really not as bad as everyone says! just make sure to drink alot of liquids take your medicine every four hours and try to eat! sorbet helped a lot and milkshakes  also mash potatoes those helped so much!!! but honestly overall i thought it was fine but i do handle pain extremely well.. hoped i helped!

I got my tonsils and adenoids out yesterday. I am 13, and the doctor said that i really needed them out.

My doctor also said that i couldnt have ice cream because it is a dairy product, and it causes mucus. I am so upset about this, because from all the throat problems i have had, ice cream has been the only thing to really help. i am refusing to eat/drink anything else. It hurts too much : (
My ear has also been hurting a lot, and I dont know what to do about it!
I am also a dancer, and have had injurys, but this has been one of the worst experiences.

Good luck everyone, feel better. : (

heya i had my tonsils out on tuesday, im 28 and it is by far the worst pain ive ever been through, im forcing myself to eat normal food like toast with butter and jam on so its not dry, i had a korma yesterday and im drinking tea and water. also i have had icecream which yeah it proberly does cause a bit of mucus ive had that problem for the last 6 months due to an enlarged tonsil but a lil icecream just to numb your throat shouldnt do you any harm, it does feel good. Im just hoping the pain will start to subside soon. hope you feel better soon

so today is the 29th and i had my tonsils and adenoids removed on the 27th. im doing great. yeah, i have some pain but its not severe. ill be 16 in less than 2 weeks & my dr. took my tonsils out cuz in august, i had a huuuge abscess in the back of my throat caused by tonsilitis. but as soon as i woke up from surgery, i had to go to the bathroom, so the nurses helped me get up & walk, then i went to stage 2 recovery and ate two popsicles right away, drank water, and took some medicine. then, i got my normal clothes on and came home. that day, i nibbled on small soft foods & ate mashed potatoes and chicken broth for supper. then yesterday, i was still nibbling, but friends came over and they wanted to go to subway, and i was feeling fine, so i went for it. i got the Subway Melt and was able to eat it all. as long as i chewed every piece up good. & i even ate some subway cookies. :)

I am currently on day 6 after getting my adnoidotonsillectomy and turbinate glands or something like that removed and I am 16 years old. I got glandular fever two years ago and have been suffering from tonsilitis almost constantly since then. I have been prescribed various antibiotics that have been continuous for the last 9 months at least and so after speaking with an ent and changing my gp they finally agreed to taking them out. When I woke up from the surgery I was in so much pain, it hurt to breath and I was still kind of out of, I tried to sit up and the nurses came over and told me to lie down and I couldn't say anything. I was given really strong pain meds every four hours in tiny capsule form along with liquid panadol which soothed my throat a bit. That night I couldn’t sleep much and they took my iv tube out because I was able to drink by myself. Day to was a mix of sleeping and drug taking. I attempted to eat the food they gave me, I managed a slice of white bread with no crust and drank the milk they gave me for cereal. I was discharged that afternoon but my nose hadn't stopped bleeding since the surgery until that night. I was given a nose cleansing thing that was water with sachet things in it, it was supposed to go in one nostril and come out the other but it came out my throat and it felt like I was choking and vomiting and my ears felt like they were going to explode so I gave up on that. Day 3 I attempted to have a shower since I actually got out of bed and moved to the lounge to watch tv haha. I was standing there and started coughing and spat what I thought would be phlegm out but there were big blobs of blood and I couldn’t breath properly. I got out and threw some clothes on, opening the door to get mum but I couldn't leave the sink, it was horrible, I was so scared. My mum started freaking out but it stopped so I didn't have to go back to emergency. It was mainly my left tonsil bed, I could se the white icky stuff covered in blood so I tried rinsing my mouth out. It was so painful after this. My drugs are drowsy and I had no trouble sleeping after this when the pain was mostly masked. I had been talking that day a fair bit, having found my voice and I think maybe that could have caused it? Anyways day 4 I felt an improvement in the middle of the day, I felt hungry and I was sick of sweet mushy foods so mum microwaved a small chicken and vegetable pie, in the microwave it went kinda soggy and so I was able to slowly pull it apart and eat it. I had soup that night for dinner as well. I have to eat with my antibiotics that I'm on twice a day or I get nauseous. Um day 5 I slept till 1/4 to 1 in the afternoon, so I didn't do much that day. Kinda stayed in bed a bit, had a heart to heart with my brother and I sounded deaf when I talked. I had a massive shower and washed my hair, I'm gunna get out of my pj's and see my boyfriend today, day 6. Um my ears hurt a fair bit last night after the shower though, especially my left side that side has the bigger, more painful tonsil bed. Woke up today at just after 6, didn’t go back to sleep cuz I don't want to sleep my bf getting here, I want to get up and look good today and hopefully looking better will help me feel a bit better. I'm staying positive for today, I have 1 or 2 of the really really strong tiny pain relief capsules left, the hospital let me leave with 6. I'm finding it painful now, but I wanted this, tonsilitis was keeping me away from school and I'm starting my HSC course now, I can't afford to keep having days of and the constant penicillin injections with my 4 times a day antibiotics were driving me insane but on Christmas break now and recovering, hoping to get a small shift at work at the end of next week as well to help me get back into things, not allowed to go to party with my friends tonight though, my parents are worried about another bleed. But today should be a good day, actually looking forward to my passionfruit yogurt for brekky and staying well hydrated too :) I'm on the road to recovery. Try and stay positive guys, you know this won't last forever and You'll never get those horrible episodes of tonsilitis again!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
