Wow. I knew someone had to get these "tonsil-stones". I've had occasional trouble with one tonsil for years! Not as bad as you describe, but I've removed the few 'tostones' that 'pop-up' with a Q-tip(not funny). Rarely have flareups, but when I do, I wanna 86 'em! Lots a water, gargle with listerine and warm salt water. My theory is the tonsils filter 'c**p' out of the body, so like the foreskin(excuse me), why remove what you were born with? I mean, there could be an underlying cause to a 'deeper' problem, not sure. Of course, if the problem was 'grossely' severe, they gotta come out. Now I will go research just what tonsils DO.

Day 3 for me it's 7:35 am. I had removed my tonsils and adenoid. The doctors said they have never removed ones these big before. So I expected so much pain. The pain is horrid, I wake up every 3 hours at night time because my throat kills as I try to swallow my own saliva. My neck hurts and I keep getting chills for some reason and I sweat a ton when I wrap myself with a blanket. I am taking hydrocodone right now. Every 4 hours, since the pain of my tonsils hurts so bad. I don't see my tonsils recovering any time soon. I do not know if this was worth it. I'm losing so much weight so fast. I try to eat something but it hurts. I'm eating pudding, ice tea, and some pop sickles right now. I miss eating meat and noodles, etc. I hope this gets better as I have nothing to do at my house anymore. I'm a 15 year old male.

So I'm 17 and I'm getting them taken out on the 20th of February. They are so swollen I have to leave class sometimes because I'm gagging on them because they are so big. What do you think I should do? The doc put me on steroids to get them to stop swelling but that did nothing. Any help would be awesome.

I am 25 and I had my tonsils removed on January 4th, 2013 (3 and a half weeks ago). I didn't have adenoids; my surgeon said they start to "disappear" once you're about 18. I still have throat pain that I take a half dose of liquid Vicodin for (7.5mg/500mg APAP), usually after I eat all day. Days 5-9 were the absolute worst. I was shocked when things weren't so bad the first 4 days, but I was very very wrong. My throat swelled up and I could swallow anything, even my own saliva so I had to spit it out in a cup. I couldn't eat anything, even jello, frozen yogurt or pudding so my pain medicine (liquid vicodin and roxicet) and the steroids i was on that supposedly reduced the swelling (you have to take them with food) made me throw up. Warning Graphic: About 10 days after my surgery, I tried to eat some crackers (huge mistake), and about an hour later my throat starting gushing blood. There weren't any clots, which was good. However, if this happens to you drink ice cold water as it shrinks the blood vessels thus stopping the bleeding (my ENT told me this). Luckily my bleeding stopped so I didn't have to go to the hospital, but I did faint twice (and I'm not queasy around blood, I've worked for doctors and am applying to med school in June).
To be completely honest, as an adult, I would not recommend this surgery to anyone who has not gotten to the point of uncontrollable throat infections. I only had strep about twice a year (sinus infections are a bigger problem for me, which won't be fixed with this) and no other problems, like very large tonsils. So, hind sight is 20/20, I would never have this surgery had I known what would go down post-op.

If they are swollen due to tonsil stones, get a water pik. it is the most non-invasive way to clean them out. I just got my tonsils out on the 29th of Jan, So i'm on day 3 of recovery. Days 1 wasnt so bad, i had my bestfriend taking care of me. yesterday was the WORST. my mom was taking care of me and for some reason the codine they gave me made my stomach reeaally mad. I was throwing up almost all day. then my doctor prescribed anti nausea medicine... that came back up too. So the 2nd to last resort was a suppository. If you dont know what that is, its medicine that you put in your butt-hole so that you dont throw it up. That seemed to work, although i felt more violated than when getting a pap-smear... Today isnt so bad, I woke up with a bit of nausea... slept a couple hours, drank some water, slept some more. Now im trying almond milk and it seems to be helping. The almond milk has no dairy, nor lactose. So the mucus isnt an issue as of yet, and im seeming to gain more and more energy. Im hungry, but nothing sounds appetizing. Not to mention Im trying to stay FAR FAR away from the Codine... I dont want to throw up anymore.... Good luck.

my tonsils aren't that bad but they are covered in white stuff
its only my right tonsil that hurts and my right ear i have been having earache for 5 days now it wakes me up in the middle of the night my eyes water because of it and i can barely swallow
my spit is so thick and full of flem i have to spit all the time it is disgusting
the doctors said my tonsils were huge and in bad shape they were scarred and cut
the same day i had my tonsils i reacted badly and had to be put on a drip and was violently sick on and off till the next day
i managed to eat quite normally that day but then it just got worse i lost so much weight i ended up feeling sick when i saw myself
i would of rathered putting up with my tonsils than having this operation it even hurts to talk i have to be pumped full of medicine before i can do anything
if anyone is considering getting their tonsils out i seriously don't recommend it ! i have had tonsillitis 6 times last year 4 the year before that ad 8 times when i was 10 but i would rather that than this
seriously don't ... you wont be able to eat properly speak properly drink properly , you will severe ear ache and get major flem

My post is a few up there as "Guest" having my tonsils out on January 4th. Funny story: I got a bacterial infection in my throat (can't call it tonsillitis anymore!) one month after having my tonsils removed. I am still having problems such as throat aching and swelling, however i've noticed the key to diminishing this is to stay hydrated--even over hydrated. Anyone else have problems a month or so out? I am 25 years old with no other medical conditions except seasonal allergies.

if you get throat infections that often i would have the surgery. i only had infections 1-2 times a year and to be honest my parents pushed me to get the surgery because i get kicked off their health insurance when i turn 26 in august. however, it is now almost 2 months out and i am still having pain in my throat (i assume where the incisions were made). advil has done nothing for it so i went back to taking roxicet (liquid oxycontin) when it becomes unbearable. i have talked to other friends who had their tonsils removed in their 20s and the consensus was that full recovery takes about 3 months (if you're unlucky!).

Well I ate A LOT of popsicles at the begging but jello and pudding were pretty easy to eat. I had mine taken out on Wednesday the 20th of February and I am eating food again. And the feeling of it being stuck to your throat it normal. And it isn't stuck. The one thing I can tell you is to drink water to the point of going to the bathroom every hour. It helped so much! For me it wasn't as bad as the doctor said it was going to be until the 6th day. That's when my scabs started shedding but during that time is when you drink even more so then it doesn't get dry and pull. My ears hurt pretty bad and I found ice packs made it feel so much better. The doctor told me to put a few drops of olive oil in the ear that hurts the worst and then put a heating pad over your ear. That helped too! But try to stick to things you don't have to chew and cool things are better than warm. I also ate those pouches of pureed fruits and veggies. It sounds gross but it wasn't that bad and that way I still got some of the nutrients that I needed.
