I am actually quite surprised that a lot of people are having this problem and I am also relieved that, based on the tests they've undergone, they came out negative from kidney failure or kidney cancer.
The first time I noticed the pain was in the winter of 2008, the year when I went out of a tropical country for the first time. I instantly correlated the pain with temperature since I've never experienced this pain before. The pain is most severe in the morning when it is coldest and when some parts of my body, especially the lower back, become exposed.
In the winter of 2009, as well as in 2010, and now during these times, the pain is coming back especially when I brush / floss my teeth and being exposed to the cold longer and sometimes without having anything to cover my body. I don't feel the pain while under the shower because the water provides warmth but the pain returns as soon as I leave the shower and until I got something to wear.
I have tried to cover my waist with some hot belt when I sleep and I hardly feel any pain in the morning but since it had been going on like this for a while, I am constantly woken up at the exact time when I was still having the pain and during the times when I forgot to wear something more.
I don't know if our kidneys are sensitive to temperature drops, but in my case, it seems that they are

I am 25 and had my urthera (the "hose" that goes out from the kidney) blocked, and it was fixed through surgery when I was about 19 years old (it was with me since birth, but the pains started in my teenage years). I had horrible pains in my left kidney, and sometimes if felt like my back was torn apart and I wanted to puke.
Recently I have started to have pain in the whole kidney region in the mornings before I get out of bed. As soon as I get up and urinate, the pain goes away.
I started a vegetarian diet (includes lots of raw food) a year ago, and my kidney pain is MUCH better. I also drink cranberry juice regularly, which also helps as an acute pain reliever for the kidney area.
If you drink cranberry juice and the pain gets worse => see a doctor. If the pain goes away => enjoy life :) The cranberries hinders bacteria to stick to the kidney-mucus, and also makes the kidneys produce lots of urine, so be careful :)

I have the same symptoms and when I asked my doctor, he suggested I checkout nightshades on the internet. Try to avoid tomatoes, peppers. It made a difference for me.

Hi I am 35years old. And I have the same symptoms as everyone else on this blog. Mine first started when I went on a juice fast. I was on this fast for five days when i started experiencing intense pain in my back kidney area. both sides.. I was drinking tons of water, lots of exercise because I had so much energy. However I was Becoming constipated. People don't like to admit that because its kind of gross. However I have seen several people post that they were constipated. I am curious if there is a corralation here. I was on the juice fast for 8days before I had to quit due to pain. I still have the pain but not as intense. My doctor said probally due to irritation of the kidneys but its been hanging on for over two weeks. I also sleep on a temperpedic but have started sleeping on the guest bed due to its firmness. Getting up helps some But still can't lay down and go back to sleep because pain comes back. Starting to take a toll on me. Ha Guess it keeps me on my toes for my next child. Also kidney test came back clear of infection. I also don't drink often. Don't smoke. Don't drink comes Or coffee. Water mainly and milk. I did have gout when i was younger. Say 25years old. They never found out why. My food really hasn't changed accept I don't eat red meat due to reflux. I hope that helps someone. Lord know we need an answer.

Has anyone here used Accutane? My pain (in my kidneys half-way through the night) began in my last couple of weeks on accutane. I know it can affect the liver and kidneys, so I was just wondering if anyone else took this drug? I'm so bummed to hear that so many are struggling with this same issue. It's very painful every morning, but I've only had it for about a month.

Me too. Same symptoms, in the morning, both sides. It just started 3 weeks ago, one morning, bang! I thought that I had pulled a muscle in my back, but not quite the same feeling as when I've pulled muscles before. This morning I decided that I needed to figure this out, so here I am. I thought that it might have something to do with drinking coffee, but I'm thinking that maybe not now. Perhaps I'll try just going in a simple diet, fewer fats and no caffeine or alcohol. When I walked the dog this morning, I could barely move. I'm 55 and from a body standpoint, getting older isn't much fun. If I find out more, I'll post it here.
Thanks all for normalizing this condition, somewhat. It is nice to know that I'm not alone and that it's not actually a death sentence.
Sort of interesting that my brain takes me there so quickly?

I just looked this up because Ive been experiencing the same thing for about a month. Im 28 and lift weights regularly. One day when I was stretching I felt a pain in both my sides that took a while to go away. At first I thought the pain in my right side I experience in the morning was because of that but it lasted for so long, and even when the left side got better. Now every morning I wake up with that right side pain, the only way I might be able to sleep more is if I lay on my back. It also goes away as soon as I get up and walk around. Havent seen any blood in my urine though

I am 25 and experiencing the same thing. I too talked to my dr and he blamed it on muscle pain due to either my bed or the way I was sleeping. My blood tests have always said that my kidneys are performing well and healthy and thankfully I have not had any blood in my urine, troubles urinating, or a strong odor to my urine. After some more research I found that you can have reflux in your ureters which can cause urine to flow back into the kidneys from the bladder and if you are a deep sleeper you wont wake up to urinate before this happens. This in turn can cause pain in the kidneys upon rising. I have since then tried to drink more water during the day and stop drinking water after 7:30 or 8:00. This way, I will be able to fully empty my bladder before bed and therefore reducing the chances of reflux. I have gone a couple days without kidney pain and it seems to be working. Also, if you eat raw vegtibles and drink a little cranberry juice it is supposed to help detox your kidneys. Good luck

For those of you people having a problem with back/kidney pain in the morning that goes away quickly after getting up and urinating, it sounds like kidney/urine reflux, where the urine backs up in the kidneys at night, this can be caused by debris or tiny stones caused by too much calcium in the urine which is usually caused by caffeine. Caffeine is extremely acidic and because the body MUST keep a somewhat neutral PH it has to excrete calcium for this task of neutralizing the acid.
I used to drink tea daily and I had this problem for about 2 years and then I went on vacation with my wife and didn't drink any tea and noticed I woke up with no pain. I was pleasantly intrigued. I thought maybe it was the lack of stress because I was on vacation or it could be the mattress. So, when I got home and the pain came back I stopped drinking tea and the pain went away.
I started drinking coffee a few months later, (just one cup a day), and at first I was fine, but slowly the morning pain returned. The pain seemed to be more centralized directly between my kidneys instead on each side like before but it was definitely the same kind of pain that resides quickly after getting out of bed and urinating. I stopped drinking anything with caffeine and I am happy to say, I have absolutely no pain at all.

Hi, I too have this kidney pain mostly during the night when trying to sleep. I noticed it affects whatever side kidney I lay on so I turn over when the pain starts to hurt too bad until the other side starts hurting. Seems like I'm constantly turning over to get the pain to stop. By early morning they both hurt to bad to continue laying down. This pain started approx 2 yrs ago but seems much worse now that it is almost every night and the pain level is higher. I don't notice any relief really from urinating in the middle of the night (besides the fact I'm upright). I have a history of lots of kidney stones and kidney infections. I had a nephrostomy for a month and then surgery on 1 kidney because a stone was so large I wasn't passing any urine. My drs have done MRI/Cat scans and ultrasounds and they don't know why I continue having this pain.
So glad I found others in the same boat as me, hopefully one of us will get lucky and find a Dr. that can figure this out and share it with everyone else suffering from this.

I have a solution!
The problem:
I also had kidney pain in the morning, before and when getting up.
When lying on the side - the pain is particularly at the below-kidney.
After getting-up (and urinating), no more pain, or a very slight pain still remains.
The solution:
Sleeping in fresh air! Just open the window and sleep near it.
After 1 or 2 nights you'll see the difference - with no pain at all.
Please! try it. I had it few times in my life from the age of 20+. Now I'm 40+. Every time it helped.
If after 1-2 days of sleeping in fresh air you will still not experience a dramatic improvement, you probably have another problem than mine, and need to continue searching.
If after 1-2 days *will* experience a dramatic improvement, I'm glad that I helped. BUT: This could be a solution only to the *symptoms* of a kidney problem.
