I have this pain as well. Have had it for a few years now. There is no blood in urine or kidney infection that i know of. Sometimes the pain is worse than other times. It is usually as most of you have described tho. It is worse the longer I sleep and if I get up and go in the night its not as bad or not at all painful in the morning. I am a soda drinker so Im wondering if maybe this isnt the culprit. I am going to try to drink more water and reduce my caffiene at nite and see what happens.

It is a strange problem. I am not happy anyone else has this but at the same time its comforting to know Im not the only one. If I find any answers I"ll post back here. Thank you all for your posts !

I have been having a similar kidney pain in the mornings along with some large intestine issues (diverticulitus and inflamation). I recently spoke with a friend who also had these symptoms - he discovered that his intestinal problems were in the vacinity where potassium is absorbed. It sounded a bit crazy, but I decided to take a potassium supplement before bed time and it works!!! Not only did the pain stop in the morning, but one night I neglected to take it and the pain was back the next morning. Give this a try for yourself and post the results.

HI! I have been reading your posts because I had this pain in my right kidney this morning! I was wondering if any of you have had your adrenal glands tested, 'specialy when stress makes it worse....Waking up around 3:00 every night is a very common sign, and for me my back hurts where my kidneys are when my adrenals are acting up! Oh yeah the adrenal glands sit right on top of your kidneys, and it is really hard for doctors to diagnose adrenal issues unless they are like not working at all! If they are just sluggish, then they really affect how you feel, but are never on the Dr.'s radar!

The tests to typically ask for initially are:
1. CBC

2. Chem 24 or similar

3. Total T3 (not T3 uptake), unless you're on birth control pills or estrogen therapy, then use Free T3 instead.

4. Total T4. Use Free T4 if on birth control or estrrogen therapy.

5. TSH

6. Start your Metabolic Temperature Graph™ as soon as you can.

Take care, and keep researching do not give up hope just because the Dr. tells you "your fine", you know your body--keep researching!

I have had this same pain since a teenager, now almost 27. I wake up with horrible pain in my lower back sides. It has seemed lately to climb up a little higher in my back. It can be relieved somewhat after I urinate in the morning, but it still feels inflamed and takes most of the morning to early afternoon to go away completely. I have had a sonogram to see if I had kidney stones or if they could visibly see a problem, but all checked out clear. Once when I was a young child I was told I had a possible duplicated system??? I have gone to another doctor in the past and he said I needed to see a chiropractor for my lower back pain. No doctor ever tries to follow up with me and figure this out. I am searching for help and answers on my own because I get tired of paying doctors that never discover what is actually wrong with me. Basically I now am trying to not drink much liquids at night so I don't fill my bladder full, but sometimes it still doesn't matter. I thought maybe it was a sleeping condition, where I don't wake up in time to use the restroom so holding it causes pain. I am just searching for answers...

Seems this problem is common. However the scaring bit is that no one seem to have an idea for a remedy. I have also had this same problem for about 5 yrs now. All along i have been ignoring the problem thinking it was a minor problem. Now I have seen a doctor and he suggested that i get my urine tested as well as having an ultrasound done for my kidneys. He is suspecting kidney stone or something like that. Watch this space for more details.

one symptom of kidney failure is a fish odor to one's breath.  has anyone here ever had a co-workers or friend joke about you having fish breath?

I have the same symptoms, and find if I drink enough water I'm usually fine in the night.  Though it helps if I'm propped up a little.  My guess is a small kidney stone. I had pain once that grew and grew in my back and then finally got painful enough for a doctor.  They couldn't see anything on the scans, and pill for infection had no effect.  One night it got to the point where I went to the emergency room and was going to receive a cat scan.   The pain traveled all the way down and I think I passed it before I could get a more detailed scan (sometimes xrays won't catch small ones).  They guessed at that point that I had a small stone.  I'm experiencing the same thing now and will occasionally have pain that travels all the way down.  Later I'll do better for a while.  Reading today I think I'm prone to stones (sensitive to collecting calcium or something) and might change my diet to prevent them in the future. Good luck!  Hope it helps.

I've just returned from Afghanistan and have been having the same problem for about a month. I thought it was a kidney infection so I've been drinking cranberry juice by the gallons. It hasn't helped at all. I've read every single post here and this one seems like the best answer to all of our problems.

it's kind of a relief to find so many other people with the exact problem I'm experiencing. I say this pain is 'excruciating' and I have it every morning to some degree. I've had urine tests, bloods and kidney scans with no results. I do find drinking more water can help. I don't drink any 'soda' drinks but I do drink tea. I'm going to try vitamin D and cranberry juice. I hope some of the people that posted a long time ago in this thread have found some relief or even answers.
