WHile this is true, I don't thinkt hat this was the point of the post. The person was talking about how they rarely have any caffeine. A whole iced tea or a soda would of course have some caffeine in it. Did you read the rest of the post?

I believe that gas may have a lot to do with peoples problems aswell. I experience pain in the kidney region when i wake up early in the morning. I am a shift worker and eat at all sorts of weird hours which plays havoc on the GI tract. Following the passing of gas, the pain subsides in my back and i can get more sleep.

BK - Are you still reading here? I am so interested in your case! I too have had similar symptoms for years and have had a lot of tests done with no result. In all of my web searches and forum reading, you're the first person I've seen that finally got a diagnosis. I'm curious if your good results have continued with the water drinking and regular bladder elimination throughout the day. Are you still out of pain in the mornings?
For everyone else - one thing I've noticed that makes a big difference for me pain-wise is the firmness of my mattress. The firmer the better. Sleeping on a soft mattress makes the pain so much worse!

Wow----what a find, I guess I'm not alone.
28 Male, (although developmentally more around 20). Drinks ~2 litres beer/weekend, ~15 cigarettes/weekend, ~10 joints/weekend, 15-20 coffees during the week.
Same deal, severe pain in the night above the right hip. Very severe if i sleep on my stomach (pillow under chest, head on mattress). Pain is relieved slowly when i stand up, but usually quicker if I urinate or bowel movement. Gas is also fairly relieving.
I am very dark in complextion when tanned in the summer (half-caribbean), but light in the winter. Therefore the vitimin D concept could make sense, as my tan is starting to fade.
The water source here has high calcium---maybe switch to bottled. Started on a bit of Cranberry juice, and trying to cut out on the coffee.
(and maybe the beer/smokes too if it doesn't work).
I have very low blood pressure, had a bit of internal damage from a car accident, and cancer a couple decades ago.
Maybe too many details, but perhaps someone will see a interesting trend with all the details together. I've seen a few that I'm eager to try out.
Have a Dr. Appointment end of december, so I'll update with how things go.

I am glad to see others with the same problem so I know I am not crazy. I don't have any blood in my urine and no it is not orthopedic related since that is the field I work in. Mine started about a month ago with very slight pain and now is so severe I cannot sleep. Tried sitting to sleep last night but still quite painful. I will try more water but I drink quite a bit already and workout a lot as well. Thought originally might be from creatine years past since I know kidneys ca have trouble filtering it. I am going to meet with a friend in nephrology and if I hear anything will post here. Seems like quite a lot of people with the same problem. I really hope this does not last long it is very frustrating.

Hey Anonymous, sorry I try to check back every once and a while. I've tried to keep up with the water drinking, I drink very little caffeine, and beer every once and a while. I really haven't had too much trouble lately. Maybe a couple of nights when I do not follow my guidelines well.
But I do not wake up to the stabbing pain anymore. I will wake up after around 9 hours of sleep, but that is from my bladder telling me it is time to visit the bathroom. No pain with it, just the feeling of needing to go to the bathroom. But then again, I probably still don't go to the bathroom enough during the day. But overall, things are good. Hope you have some luck!

BK that sounds like a pretty promising breakthrough so I'm glad to hear that's working for you. Does anyone have similar success?

I seem to have the same problem. However, I have another symptom - I get very hot in bed, to the extent that my partner complains about it. I have always been a hot person and walk around in winter in a T Shirt but this is step further. I smoke (must give up!), don't drink alcohol very often, and recently I have been doing a fair bit of exercise (riding to work 11KM each day or about 7.5 miles if I remember my conversion). I drink a lot of water and go to the toilet maybe 6-10 times a day. I seem to get dehydrated easily so I try and keep up the water intake.
My question is: does anyone else experience being overheated in bed?

BK - Thanks for your response. I'm glad what you're doing is still working for you! That's such good news. I have been having quite a bit more pain lately, and just realized I've been drinking a lot less water. Maybe there is a correlation between the two. I will step up my water drinking back to what it usually is and see if I notice a difference.
ortho12 - If you check back here before you visit your nephrologist friend, would you mind asking him about this condition? I really feel like our pain is kidney related, but my primary doctor won't refer me to a specialist since my kidney ultrasound came out normal.

I think many of you may find this post useful as I have had this problem for a long time. I suffer from VUR (reflux where urine goes up into the kidneys). The pain is worse in the morning because a) you are lying down and it is easier for the urine to go up into the kidneys, and b) because your bladder is filling. I wake up approximately 2 to 3 times a night from mild pain and it will go away if I go to the washroom or even if I stand up for a few minutes. I wake up from the mild pain- not the need to urinate. I also find that if I take a deep breath when I feel this mild pain, it turns into a sharp stabbing pain. I was tested for reflux about 10 years ago and they said I had grade III reflux. They almost always perform surgery on grade 4 and 5, but 1 2 and 3 (more mild cases) are often left to (hopefully) correct themselves. Reflux itself is not a danger. However, it makes you more susceptible to kidney infections. If you have repeated kidney infections it can cause irreversible kidney damage. I have only had about 3 kidney infections so I don't have too much to worry about. This problem is most often seen in children so there is not much information in relation to adults. My pain / frequency has gradually become worse over the last 10 years so I have begun seeing my urologist again. Because the problem did not correct itself, and is actually getting worse- he thinks something should be done. There are two typical options. Open surgery in which they reattach the ureter to the bladder in the correct position (which is the most effective option but is a much longer recovery), or another process where they endoscopically inject a substance called deflux which apparently can correct the problem. The second option has a much lower success rate but the surgery is not invasive and you go home the same day as opposed to the first option where you are admitted for about 4-5 days, and require a catheter for about 3 weeks (not to mention an 8 inch scar). So.... it seems as the the deflux option is the best bet. If it doesn't work, they can do it again. If that doesn't work... then go for the open surgery. My specialist needs to run more tests before any of this can be scheduled. If you think you have VUR- request to have a voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG). Though it isn't the most pleasant experience... it will be the only test that shows up positive. All my kidney function blood tests, urine tests and ultrasounds are fine. The VCUG is the only test that shows I have this problem. Best of luck with you all. I'll post a reply if I get scheduled for the surgery!

Well following my post regarding the passing of gas as a possible cause I have made another discovery. I always have a very early dinner usually by 4 to 5 pm I would have consumed my dinner. During this time I had not noticed the pain however over the last number of days I have had later dinners about 9 pm and not only has the pain returned but it has become more frontal and slightly lower than the kidney area and more my ascending colon. The pain is made worse if I sleep on my stomach and is only slight to non existent if I sleep on my back.
Now my theory. Posture when you sleep may impede food passing easily through the colon causing a slight blockage, along with the build up of gas which causes the pressure feeling. When you wake up, there is obviously a dramatic change in posture and thus a bowel movement or going to the bathroom you typically tense your stomach muscles in an effort to expedite either the passing of urine or gas causing a bowel movement thus giving the impression of relief from urination.
Now since most of us have had kidney test after kidney test with no obvious result that suggests anything is wrong with them, it is something to consider.
Try not eating any later than 6pm if you can help it and not heavily and see if you have any relief.

I may have found the cause of all this for many of you! I have had many of these exact symptoms; pain in the mornings in my back (kidney area), sometimes so bad it's hard to breath or sit up. Pain would go away shortly after getting out of bed and going to the rest room. Laying on my left side became impossible because it would trigger a sharp pain (again, making it hard to breath). No discoloration in urine, drinking lots of water would sometimes help but not always, and I would usually have a lot of gas buildup. Now for the interesting part: One day I decided to start a Gluten-free diet and within a couple days I was feeling better. No more back pain, I can lay on my left side, and haven't slept this good in several years. I would suggest trying a gluten free diet for a few days, It worked wonders for me and as I was reading a lot of these previous posts I couldn't agree with the symptoms and how they affected me more. Avoiding wheat products can be difficult, but not impossible, just look at the ingredients and look for any wheat/gluten containing items. If after a week you don't feel different in anyway, maybe I just got lucky and found what works for me. I really hope that this helps everyone, I forgot how good it feels to wake up feeling absolutely nothing.

I have this problem too but only when I sleep for like 12 hours or more. I work night shift so when my weekend comes I tend to just sleep for a long time. When I wake up pain in my lower body right above the hips and in the front I feel pain which goes away after some time awake. I have been giving it some thought and I think a lot of times it is just a mucscle cramp or something muscle related because when I sleep on my couch it is more of a problem than my bed. When I got the pain I rolled onto my back and it wasnt so bad. I think that the muscles we use to hold in pee get a bigger workout when sleeping on your side for instance than the back. After waking up and peeing and stretching the pain starts to relax. I am no doctor but I have made these observations tell me what you think.

I have been suffering with this conditon for 6 months but it comes and goes, for the last 3 days the pain after waking up isso bad i walk around looking like a woman in labour as the pain in my kidneys is so bad. its doesnt matter whether its night or not if i lay down for over 2 hrs whn i stand up the pain in my kidneys comes and it takes roughly about 45 mins for the pain to go away bareable enough to sleep again or go to work. my kidneys still have a dull ache from about 3pm onwards and today i am suffering with a bad stomach aswell lots of number 2's have also visited the toliet today over 8 times before 1pm but this might be due to tha fact after reading all these posts i gave alchol a miss last night and drank plently of water.
Got an appointment tomorrow at 430 but i suppose that im just starting the visits to the doctors and nothing will get done on the 1st appointment about this problem. Was looking forward to xmas but not looking forward to the pain every morning and not drinkning at this festive time
