Sorry ahead of time for the long read. Skip to the bottom for a summary.
I'm currently 31. Man. I'm not sure if I'm relieved or worried to find out so many people have this. I too assumed it was just due to rubbing from socks/pants. I noticed a rectangular patch of hair missing from both legs (shins, outside, above the ankle) a few years ago. I thought it was because I wore boots for so long in the Army. That never really bothered me, i just thought it was normal.
What has bothered me is my outer thighs/quads. It sort of made sense that hair missing from there may be caused by the rub and jeans and stuff, but over the past year or so it's just gotten so much, more widespread. I've been tracking it's progress since first noticing, but today is the first time I've ever been prompted to do a google search.
There's zones for whatever this stuff is. I can tell where it started and where it's spreading at this point. For me it started as red dots in the hair follicles in the center of my thigh (on the outside left, and outside right thigh). That red dot area spread over time, over a year, maybe more. Currently, the area where I first noticed the inflammed hair folicles (red dots) is completely smoothed over, no bumps, no red, no hair. It's like a circular patch of missing hair. From that area outwards, the red dots and itchyness and broken hair has spread. It now covers the length of my thigh, from just below the hip to right above the knee on the outside thighs. Both thighs. Whatever right, been living with it for who knows how long. Why care now?
Well, when i awoke this morning I noticed my left leg was slightly asleep, or at least it felt that way. No big deal, happens. However, maybe 30-45 later while in the shower I discovered that my leg was STILL asleep.. only it wasn't my leg. Can you guess what it was? I'm sure you can. The area occupied by the LHL (leg hair loss). ONLY that area. It's very odd. If you are experiencing this stuff and you've taken a real good look at the area where it's occurring, you can tell where it begins and where it ends. It's like the border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. You really could outline it that way, it's that apparent.
So! My leg is experiencing a loss of sensation and feeling that is isolated to a location on the leg that just so happens to be occupied with a weird unknown bout of hair loss and other issues. And it's only that area, I mean, within a millimeter just outside the LHL area I have feeling and sensation. Tested with a sewing needle. Someone mentioned earlier in the thread about nerve damage. Ive had temporary nerve damage in various places, squatting for long periods of time would make my big and 2nd toe go to sleep for a few days, but that was because I was resting all my weight on them for 6hrs straight.
THIS though, no idea. How could it only be afffecting that specific area, what does it mean? I am definitely not as healthy as I used to be. I smoke, drink, all the fun stuff. We need someone with good discipline and willpower to test various things like cutting caffeine, or nicotine, cutt excess sugars, etc. See if it makes a difference. I'm taking me and my leg to the Dr. and if he tells me "it's normal, just comes with age." I'll try to level with the guy and explain. I can't see myself walking out of there with a 'ahh sleep it off' or something. Anyways, Godspeed and good luck out there. I'll try to post an update after the visit.
TLDR: 31yrs old, male. Got the hair loss red bumpies areas on outside thighs, just starting to notice them in the calves. Missing the rectangle patch above the ankle for maybe 5 years or so. Woke up this morning to discover the affected hair loss area on the left thigh has a loss of sensation. It's like my thigh is asleep, that feeling, or lack thereof, and it's just in that weird area where the business is going down. What gives. Also I'm pretty unhealthy.

I have the same thing for past 10+ years. I have talked to my doctor several times and he told me that it's nothing serious since I still have hair on my toes.
But I want to know what you found out. Please leg me know .
Thanks,
Dan

Other blogs elude to socks or pant rubbing.
I agree...but will take it one step further.
I find wearing socks with high percentage of man-made fibers causes the problem. Upon switching to socks with high cotton content, the itching and hair loss go away.
Let me add, most socks are manufactured overseas in China where quality control is not taken seriously for mass-production*. Who knows what chemicals are used to make the polyester, elastic, etc.
Changing to U.S. made socks (if you can find them) with a high cotton content may significantly reduce everyone's itching, burning, and hair fallout.
* about ten years ago, dog food ingredients (manufactured in China) tainted with melamine fillers sickened canines worldwide.
Currently, toys and other consumer products imported from China still test positive for lead and other chemicals banned by most countries.

My idea is that it is related to poor circulation / hormonal unbalance / thyroid's issues. Hair on the elbow are still there, only are miniaturized (like in male patterned baldness). They regrow from time to time, but they remain very small. damn, this is puzzling

I read everyones post, and it seems you are all very fit and active. I feel its nothing to worry about, except to stop scratching. The color dye theory is very small compared to the first I have introduced so dont get scared of wearing pants now!
