Welllll.... isn't that comforting, brain tumour... It's prolly just stress like the other guy said.

Hello Waterboy,
I have exactly the same condition. Outside of both shins, from the ankle to about half-way up to my knee, are basically hairless. No sores or irritation of any kind on the skin. I do suffer from a condition where I absorb to much iron (called, "Hemachromatosis") and I haven't had my iron level checked recently, so I thought that might have something to do with it, but I'm doubtful. At any rate, I feel healthy, run and exercise very regularly, and am in my mid-40's.
You may want to get your iron level checked. If you're caucasion, there's a decent chance that you might have too much iron stored in your body. I found out via a routine blood test ... I wasn't feeling bad at all, but the iron gets stored in your liver and can become toxic, as I understand it.
Regards,
Mark

First, I'm glad to have found this forum so quickly! I just noticed the same thing as described above this weekend. I'm a 43 year-old male with hairy legs (one of my best features per my wife) and outside of my legs on both sides, same pattern of loss from knee to ankle has lost about 50% of the hair and when I rub it I can feel stubble as if I've shaved. the hair still there is thinner and it is so bizarre that right to the other side of the bone, the hair is full and thick and normal. It looks very odd and some of the reading I've done so far tonight suggest that there could be circulation problems to blame as well some worse maladies. While i thought it might be silly to check with my doc, I think I will bring this to his attention. I will keep this forum updated on what I learn. I began to rub lotion on them last night thinking maybe that will make a difference. I have worn pajamas this year more frequently and perhaps they have rubbed. I don't know what to think other than I want my hair back! I guess i'm one of those "old fashioned" men that is proud of his body hair and would never imagine getting rid so I certainly don't want it leaving on its own...I couldn't wait until I was older and had all the hair in the right places!! LOL
Please keep us all updated on current developments with ya'll out there. This is really a shock to me.
Thanks.

Same here, except I don't play football. Do you wear high socks playing football?
Could be a genetic thing. My brother is 4 years older, and I noticed when he turned 40 it looked like he was shaving his lower legs. He said no, the hair just fell out. When I turned 40, the same thing happened, tho only on the outside of the lower legs.
I am almost 50 now and the hair is not coming back. Doc says I have dry skin...maybe that has something to do with it. I saw somewhere that oil of Evening Primrose may help.

this has been happening to me too on my calves and the insides of my thighs.
i'm only 20 and i've just lost weight, so I put it down to that for some reason.

This occurred for me after I went through chemotherapy. Determined it might be nerve damage. (Also ended up with some numbness in toes on both feet.) Have checked symptom and found this is listed as a symptom in diabetis, as well, when nerves are damaged.

Ended up with the same condition after chemotherapy. Did some research. Found out it could be from nerve damage. (Also had some numbness in toes on both feet.) While checking symptoms on net, ran across reference to this being a symptom connected to diabetis, when nerves have been affected. This supports the idea of nerve damage. Could also explain why a brain tumor, or other injury, affecting a nerve, could cause the symptom. Have asked three different types of doctors, and they all just look at me blankly.

To all the people below i would like to thank you very much for your info.
I noticed it today around 4pm then i was worried why it was hairless.
the weird thing is its only on the outer part of my shin on both legs exact same spot.
It looks and feels like its been shaved with no cream and has ingrown hairs but i dont shave
i googled the sympton and all i could find was radiation sickness
this got me really freaked out.
i started work at 6pm the same day and went on worried about it then around 7pm i took a toilet break and while in the cubical i started to feel a bit dizzy and i thought oh god what if it is radiation sickness then i had a major panic attack and almost passed out so i walked outside took a breath went in to work and told my boss i was feeling ill she is so nice she let me go home
i got home and showed my sister ( i can speak with her no problem about anything)
then she said it was weird so i showed my mum and dad said oh you mean something like this? and he has it aswell
So my guess is that its something genetic since I'm 17 going on 18 its around when it starts?
thanks to you guys aswell it calmed me down alot.

My husband has patchy hair loss on both legs that were fairly symmetrical for about 2 years. His regular doc periodically prescribed steroid cream whitch never helped. Finally sent him to a dermatologist about a month ago and a biopsy was taken. It came back as "follicular mucinosis" which is considered rare (but I am starting to wonder...because a lot of these posts sound very similar...) So rare - that a cause for the condition is rarely known, and there are many different treatment options because nothing has really been known to work.
The scary part though is that this follicular mucinosis can be related to lymphoma, so we have now had 4 biopsies and many blood tests looking for cancer, or an autoimmune disorder, or lupus... We are still waiting for the big biopsy that was sent through something called Flow Cytometry (I think this is looking for early cancer).
In any event - have your docs take biopsies...it could be follicular mucinosis - which can be completely benign - or related to lymphoma. (At least this is the way I understand it?!?!)
Good luck to all of you.

Ok, that's the scariest reply I've read yet. I hope it's not that. I have the same thing and I'm 34 and have had it for ten years now and it's not getting any better.
I was considering Rogaine. Do you think that will work?
It is extremely embarrassing and I don't wear shorts because of it.

amazing, up until recently (the last few months) I had 2 identical bald patches on both legs just above the ankles - the same size for well over a decade. But these past few weeks they have grown, one bald patch on the left leg has increased slightly. But the right leg has increased by 500%, now covers the majority of my calf and the 25% of the shin. No stubble, just smooth.
It can't be trousers / pants rubbing as they aren't the same size.
I've also been wearing shorts and sandels for 2 weeks.
It can't be lack of exercise as I cycle / run / swim / home fitness.
I do have a very stressful job, which I've been doing for nearly 3 years now.
I have no pains / aches apart from a minor knee injury. No cold feet, headaches or general discomfort. I still get spots at 34 on my back and now and again on my face.
I'm glad i read this site as it seems more common and nothing to worry about the majority of the time, mainly a visual problem I think - but who cares. My legs are on show for everyone to see when I'm out running and cycling, but as its fairly common I not bothered. Hell, it could be a lot worse !!

I have the exact same problem. I am 28 years old. I started noticing the problem when I was about 20. Same deal small red dots where the hair should be. Some hairs growing back but very thin and almost like stubble. Back of my arms (triceps are is the same). I have been to several dermatologists and all say the same thing. It is an example of a type of Keratosis(there are many types). This is a descriptive term that basically means the skin is drier than it should be in certain areas and the outer layer is too thick. They don't know what causes it, only that it has a genetic component. The only treatment they could offer is a steroid cream which wasn't all that effective unless I applied it all the time, and steroid cream is not good to take for extended periods of time. I asked a natural path physician and he said the same thing but he insisted that it had something to do with the skin not absorbing enough Vitamin A. I have since only found a combination of a daily multivitamin supplement that has 100% daily Vitamin A and body lotion applied before I go to bed that has vitamin A (kiss your face is a good one (sounds girlie, I know!). My hair hasn't grown back but it also hasn't gotten any worse over a 2 year period and the red bumps are virtually gone and the skin as a whole looks much better. I also try to wear shorts as often as possible. I hope this helps. BTW I am a medical student.

Have any of you gotten biopsies?
As we learn more and more about what is going on with my husband, it is starting to look more like a skin lymphoma. My concern is that this is more common that anyone seems to think, because doctors aren't doing biopsies and just writing it off as dermatitis, eczema, or dry skin. Urge your docs to get biopsies.
We are meeting with a specialist next month to determine the next course of action. Probably photochemotherapy.
My husband has been dealing with this patchy, symmetrical hair loss for almost three years now and has been treating it with steroid cream (not much use except to stop the itch.)
I urge you all to be vigilant and not to take this lightly. Hair loss on the legs is NOT COMMON. Don't treat it as such.
Take good care.

Hi guys,
I'm a woman with the same problem.
My partner doesn't care for me to shave my legs or I wouldn't have noticed it!
Exactly the same thing - some red dots sometimes, some hairs that look as though they were broken in half, and symmetrical bare patches.
Let me know how you get on with the doctors!
It costs us a lot of money to get things checked out here (Rep of Ireland), which means I don't think I can get this checked out.
My mother's ferritin (iron levels are a bit too high - she has single copies of two different genes that cause the iron overload condition - haemochromatosis, and she has hypothyroid and coeliac as well.
As far as I know I don't have any of these conditions, and feel quite well.
I had two children recently - one is 5 and one is six months - and I know pregnancy can affect hair loss - but that's obviously not the problem for you guys!!
Let me know what the doctors say please.
