Hi, I have a very big kidney stone that won`t just pass on its` own. My doc has recommended me a treatment by ultrasonic waves, so called lithotripsy. I don`t know much about that and would like to hear from somebody with experience.

Hi, lithotripsy, full name Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy, is no big deal. And how big is your stone? Lithotripsy is not such a good method for very large stones. Anyway, here is how it goes. Your doc will send some shock waves that will penetrate through your skin and tissue and hit directly to the kidney stone. Those waves will break that big stone into small, sand-like pieces that will pass through your urinary system. There are 2 types of lithotripsy machines. The one when you sit in a tub of water, and the other when you lie on a table. Recovery time is short and you will resume your normal life in a few days. Of course, complications may occur, for example, blood in your urine, bruising, but those are common things. Also, some patients need to go on additional treatment.
