This is exactly the type of pain I have been experiencing. It only happens when I am sleeping and I awaken the same way you describe. I have a short amount of time before I have to either sit on the toilet or get in the shower because once the pain starts, its debilitating.
Unfortunately, I have had the same response from doctors as you've had. Its interesting to see your age in comparison to mine, however. My symptoms started about 5 years back as well but right now I'm only 30. Someone on here suggested going to see someone that specializes in pelvic pain and I think that will be my next move. If you ever get any more information on this, please share with me. Yours is only the second description I've found on here that is virtually identical to mine. The onset is quite distinct so its hard for me to believe that there isn't something to this because our descriptions are so similar and specific. Best of luck and hope to hear some good news :)

Wow, I am amazed there are so many women with the same pain as me. I am 45 & have had the stomach cramping after orgasm off and on for at least a dozen years. It will go away for months at a time then hit me again when I have forgotten about the pain. I have not noticed if there are certian things in common to make it happen. Sometimes the cramping is mild other times it doubles me over, some times it lasts a few minutes and other times I still feel the lingering pain although not really continuing in a 'cramp' for days.
I have 2 grown kids and tubes were tied when I was young so I do not use birth control. I do not have any health issues and have a normal lifestyle other than this. I have not mentioned the cramping to a Dr in YEARS as it did me no good before when I did. I was told my uterus moved slightly when giving birth the first time and that is reason for pain. No helpful ideas to stop pain or help me.
I am thankful that I do not have the severe symptoms that some of you have mentioned but still would love this stomach pain to go away. It certianly hurts love making when I know it may end in pain.

It is really good to know that I am not alone in this--the doctors I have spoken with about this problem have seemed to have no idea what I am talking about. For me symptoms began about six years ago early in my first pregnancy at age 26. After having an orgasm a slightly painful, cramp-like pain would radiate on the left side of my lower abdomen and last for about a minute. At first I didn't think too much of it, but when it continued to happen even after my son was born I talked to my gynecologist about it. She ordered an ultrasound which showed an ovarian cyst. I was told it was nothing to worry about, but that it could be removed if the problem persisted. Some months later, I awoke in the middle of the night with the most excruciating, gut-wrenching pain. I was SO sick with abdominal cramping/nausea. I would have gone to the ER had the pain not subsided when it did. All in all, it lasted for about 45 minutes and was gone. I researched it the next day and concluded that the cyst had ruptured.
Over the next couple of years, the pain remained about the same, but for some reason was entirely absent when I would have an orgasm during my second pregnancy, only to return again post-partum. The same thing happened (or didn't happen) again during my third pregnancy (my youngest is now 10 months old). However, things are now starting to get worse--the pain that used to come on only after orgasm now begins way before orgasm occurs at all. And at times I have abdominal pain on that left side for no apparent reason.
So I have made an appointment to see my OBGyn and do another ultrasound next week. Because I have read that ovarian cysts can return even after they are surgically removed, I hope that my doctor will agree to just remove the left ovary all together. I figure since I am done having kids, I don't really need it anyway and I am almost certain that it's the cyst that is causing all this discomfort. My hypothesis is that an expanding uterus during pregnancy has pushed the ovary, and thus the cyst, out of the way, preventing the cyst from being in the path of muscular spasms that happen during orgasm. I don't know though, and I'm not convinced that my doctor will either, but something has got to give because I am so tired of this!

This is an amazing topic that every female on this board is experiencing Pelvic Pain. I am in the same boat as all of you on here and have had this ridiculous pain for over 3 years now and still battling this. I have had sonogram twice (1 year apart), MRI, Colonoscopy, and running around to dozens of Pelvic Pain Specialist to no prevail. The only thing that showed up were very small fibroids on the outside of the uterus. For all of these Pelvic Pain Doctors and GYN's it's amazing that they have no clue as to what is causing the problem. You would think that after going to College and mastering female reproductive system and so forth that they would know what to do. I was told by 1 GYN that it was my hip causing the pain. Then I ended up seeing a highly novice Pelvic Pain Specialist who told me I had IBS and put me on some meds. Seriously? I just love how these so called doctors love assuming what the problem is. This is where I began to sue doctors for assuming such things and not really taking extra measures to diagnose a patients problem. I have been seeing a Physical Therapist who deals with Pelvic Pain. It involves with Vesceral Manual Manipulation, Internal Pelvic Floor Pain Treatment that involves muscle tightness in the inside wall, Abdominal massaging that where the muscles and the tissue that connects from the lower Ab to the Pelvic region. When I first started going to the PT, I had a major restriction in the lower AB and the inside walls were tight. After 5 months of treatment the pain level decreased from 100% to 60%. The owner at this PT is assisting me in finding a doctor who really specializes in Pelvic Pain. At this rate...we have 3 people who know what is going on and would like to see me. Those of you who have not thought of a Physical Therapy who deals with Pelvic Pain and Vesceral work... I recommend starting there first. If anyone on here lives in Maryland, please let me know and I can refer you to a PT who is really wonderful, understanding and very caring.

I have been having the same problem for about 4 years now. When it first started the pain wasn't that bad and it didn't last but a minute or two. I talked to my gynecologist and she blew me off. Basically she told me that the pain was in my head because I wasn't happy in my relationship. Now the pain is extreme, and will last for anywhere from ten minutes up to a couple of days. If I have a sex dream I will wake up in pain. Even if I have a bowel movement and push harder than normal, I will be in pain for hours. I have had pain for the last few days in a row. I have an appointment to see the gyno again, but I doubt they will do much for me because I have medicaid now and it's hard to find a doctor that will even accept medicaid. Whatever this is has really hurt my relationship with my husband. We used to have a very active sex life and now I try to avoid having sex with him because I know I will be in extreme pain afterwards. He tries to be understanding, but I can tell he thinks it's because I am not in love with him anymore. I thought it was just me until I found this website and see page after page of women complaining of the same thing. That at least makes me feel a little bit better.

I'm 18 and I've been having this problem. After orgasms I get a very mild cramping feeling in my lower abdomen that goes away almost immediately if I change my position. I've heard that it could just be the uterus contracting as a result of the abdomen, but I don't know for sure. Hope that helped.

For the last 2 months I have also been experiencing a sharp pain during orgasm. It is a quick, sharp zap-like pain (almost feels like a pinched nerve) and it is more on the left side than the right. It feels like it is starting in the lower pubic bone area and moves upward. I also have been having this pain (although less intense) once in awhile outside of orgasm. Finally, this past cycle I was a week late getting my period despite the fact that I have been on the pill for years and am always like clockwork. I thought that was strange so I am going to see my doctor tomorrow. I am 40 yrs old with 2 children. I also had 2 c-sections. I do suffer from occasional painful gas pains, but only when I drink or eat something acidic (ie. diet soda). My mom had endo when I was a kid and had to have a complete hysterectomy when she was 38 years old. Is endo hereditary? Even on the pill, my periods are quite heavy.

If this were happening to men, would there be studies done? (rhetorical question)
I have the sharp shooting pain to my right ovary instead of orgasm for 6+months.
My doctor has never heard of this before. He is sending me for an ultrasound. Nothing will be found if this info line is any indication.
I am also being checked for possible gallbladder problems. Somewhere in these 9 pages there was a similar case.
Hard sore stomach, bloating, and gas are also new problems.
I have taken gluten, refined sugar, caffeine, and alcohol out of my diet....and now orgasms?
What is left to live for!?!
