I had scoliosis surgery 8 years ago, and had several rods fused to my spine. I have lower back pain frequently, especially after running, lifting furniture, or standing all day. Pilates has really helped me strengthened a lot of my muscles, which has helped a lot in preventing some of that back pain. You have to be careful though on how much pressure you put on your back though, I've pulled lots of muscles around my rods and that is NO FUN! :-( it hurts a lot and I ususally end up in bed for a day or two. So just be careful when working out or doing pilates- you'll learn the things that you can and cant do. Good Luck! :-)
