Oh my goodness! So here I am laying in bed having just woken up at 1 p.m. due to being disturbed by a lump in my throat in the middle of the night that lasted until 9 a.m. I am 29 years old. I have been smoking since I was 12. From the outside I definitely don't look like I've smoked but on the inside I am definitely feeling it. I tried to quit age 23 but my ex husband-non smoker was not a nice guy and didn't make it easy for me, that's for sure. He later was kicked out of the military for violating a M.P.O. that was put on him when I left him, his abuse and unfaithfulness. Every time I quit smoking, the 3rd day my ex would always cause distruction in my life making it impossible. We must make it possible though!!! No kids but through 2 years of trying to divorce this sucker I chained smoked due to anxiety... Fear. Divorced. Finally quit smoking New Year's Day. Cheers!!! Started taking chantix a month prior. The chantix caused me to have vivid dreams, always talking in my sleep and waking up to myself. From my experiences, I wasn't rimming in my sleep either, so I was always tired but chantix does help, as much as it can cause side effects, it's better then smoking. I will admit that I would take a couple drags here and there throughout the day having no more then a whole cigarette, but that's just plain stupid of me, especially after what I experienced all morning. I woke up around 1:30 a.m. with what first to me felt like a bubble stuck in my throat and I know it sounds silly but I don't really know how to burp nor have I ever wanted to learn, haha. My boyfriend who is an ex smoker and has also experienced what most of us have, explained to me that it is tar that my lungs are trying to clean out. In his experiences, he explained that he would wake up in the morning with a lump in his throat that was difficult to come up but eventually would and had literally stuck to the side of the sink. This lump (tar) also had a terrible odor and color. That is the tar we have built up in our lungs from smoking cigarettes. Makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about it. All morning I was afraid to swollow because if I did, that lump of tar would come creeping back up my throat sometimes within minutes but a lot of times within seconds. It was extremely uncomfortable every time it would creep up and half the time it was extremely painful and felt like it was scraping the side of my throat. That's how I knew for certain it was a lumpy piece of tar having come up at different angles, one of them being sharp! I threw up a couple times and once I heard something heavy fall into the small trash can I was using. I've been afraid to look to see it to be honest. Just the thought of that makes me sick just thinking about smoking again. It eased up a bit but then came back 5 minutes later but not as bad. I chugged two cups of coffer hoping it would help because I ran out of tea but I believe the smart thing to do is buy tea, chai tea is my favorite, and im thinking maybe some honey in the tea would help and a dab of milk. I am picking some up now. If I continue to take those very few drags, this lump will not go away and may likely worsen. There is two things I can do to get rid of it, 1. Start smoking regularly and deal with worse problems considering cancer down the road, or 2. Quit smoking COMPLETELY and let your body do what it's suppose to, clean all that ickiness out. I want to be healthy again!

This thread has been by far the most comforting, I smoked about half a pack a day for about 4+ years, with good amounts of marijuana as well. It's been a month since I've quit, I have had all sorts of crazy symptoms happening with my body, at first it was the lumps or whatever in the mouth, consulted 2 dentists and they said it's nothing advised some multivits and vitamin C, and saline water gargles.

Now since the past 2-3 days I have this feeling of a lump inside my throat, I'm glad to have stumbled upon this thread. My anxiety has calm down a bit. I have an appointment for tomorrow with the ENT. let's see what he says.

It's amazing and scary. I smoked for 6 years about 10 a day along with another "herb" I quit smoking both a month ago and since then have had terrible anxiety and most of the symptoms people are describing. I spoke to my brother who is a bio engineer and he really calmed me down. He said everything that is happening makes sense. What's funny is right after I spoke to him my anxiety went away along with the lump feeling in my throat and the tightness in my neck and jaw. I really believe that most of what we are feeling is due to anxiety. Our bodies need to heal and feeling pain or having a cough is indeed a good thing. It means your body is getting better. I like to imagine where I'll be in a year from now and I know this will all be worth it. As hard as it is I will keep going. I'm only 28 and want to have a good long life and the only thing that was stopping me was cigarettes. I also spoke to my doctor who said the younger you are when you quit the more chance you have to fully recover as if it never happened. That's what I'm hoping for. Good luck to everyone and remember everyday gets easier. Don't give up!

Tomorrow will be 6 weeks since my last cigarette. The first few weeks were actually hell. I felt the lump in my throat and had terrible anxiety because of it. Finally after 4 weeks the lump went away but on came the excruciating burning sensation in my neck, chest and back. With this came more anxiety and a doomed feeling. I thought it would never end. Finally a week later I feel relief. I do have some uncomfortable indigestion but I'll take that over everything else I went through during this journey. My point is, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. My anxiety is a fraction of what it was, I'm sleeping better and have less palpations each morning. Every day gets a little better but I'm happy to report I'm starting to feel like myself again and this was so worth it!

I had palpitations, I stopped eating fatty foods, lost over 3 stone and now they are 99% gone

Everything you described is normal for quitting smoking. Some of the symptoms such as fatigue will last only a week whereas coughing up the tar can take up to a year as your lungs try to clean themselves out.

I came to this site about a year ago feeling a lump in my throat and pretty sick . I hope the following explanation of my experience helps you. I gave up a year and a half ago after 25 years on 30 per day. I started with ecigs, what I did no know was these caused my nose to bleed internally and post nasal drip. With an excess on mucus and a feeling of a lump in my throat, I was spitting up mucus with a small amount of blood in it, thinking that it was from my throat.

As you would expect I thought the worst and my anxiety levels went through the roof. I was experiencing heart palpitations and chest pains and general aches and pains. I tried gum and then cold turkey after about three months. I felt like I had a bad flu for about three weeks and felt that I was surely going to die.

I finally ended up trying patches, again, that had never worked in the past. They helped almost immediately when I put one on and did work this time, I feel confident I will not start again after having gone through this experience.

Over about four months I had full blood tests, thyroid blood tests, thyroid ultra sound, chest x-ray, endoscope, gastroscopy for reflux, MRI on sinuses and a visit to the psychiatrist as I was losing it. Nothing was found to be wrong but it is worth checking.

While this web page helped It is hard to find information that exactly matches your symptoms as everyone is different. Dr Google sometimes only makes your anxiety levels higher and therefore your symptoms worse. It is amazing how much smoking buggers up your body and how long it takes to get better. I am feeling better now but still have a little way to go. Good luck.
