I have had Mirena just over a year. I used to have regular periods. Now I get my period, it last 2 to 3 weeks, goes away for a week, and is back again. I'm so scared something is wrong with me. I no longer have insurance so I can't go see if something is wrong. Any suggestions? :-(

Mirena has been the most irritating birth control ever! I had it inserted 12/2008 and I spot everyday! I blame the Mirena for destroying my marriage. I couldnt have sex with my husband cuz I was constantly bleeding every single day & now Im in the middle of a divorce because he went out and cheated. I got Mirena cuz it said that I wouldnt bleed anymore but Its worst now. I cant take the pills cuz theymake me bitchy & spot, the Depo made me gain hella weight and loose hair, the Nuva Ring always falls out and itsnt reliable, the Copper T IUD had me bleeding like I had been shot or something! Ive decided to get my tubes tied. MIRENA Sucks!!!!

I am so happy to see all of these responses. I thought something was wrong with me and am glad to see that I am not the only one having this problem. I had mirena put in 3 months ago and since then I have had constant bleeding and cramps, and when I did get my period it was very painful. The bleeding stopped once for only 3 days, and now for the last week I have been having a nasty brown discharge as well, and after I have sex it is red again. This is so annoying. I think after I meet with my OB I am going to make plans to have it removed. I was so looking forward to 5 years of no worries and no period, but I cant deal with bleeding every day.

Wow what an interesting read! This is the second time I have had the Mirena put in. The first time I had little to no spotting throughout its time in my body. I found it was very successful!! When I had it removed, I easily fell pregnant to have my second child. I recently had another Mirena put back in but have been bleeding for a week and a half after the procedure. I'm really concerned that I am not ever going to stop!! Its not painful or heavy... just red bleeding that is not light enough to use panty liners. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm really hopeful that everything will be fine and I have success again with it, however... I'd be very interested to learn why I am bleeding so much and when its going to stop!!!

I have always used copper IUDs without hormones and they have been effective. I am 43 and had started developing PMDD at 41. I went to see the doctor who put me on Yaz for the PMDD. The first side effect was non-stop bleeding. Second? No sex drive AT ALL. I was told it took 2 months for my body to deal with the issue. 3 months later, still bleeding non-stop and she gave me a testosterone gel to help with the sex drive. Between the two things I was becoming another person, withdrawn, depressed, always tired, I could barely function and I took myself off the testosterone almost immediately. 6 months later, still bleeding, moody and depressed and she recomends endometrial ablation to just stop the bleeding altogether.

I thought about it but figured it would be worth it because my periods with or without an IUD have always been 7 - 10 days long and intense, painful with bad clots. When I talked to her she told me getting that instead of the operation getting the Mirena on top of Yaz, I would stop bleeding. She changed it. The side effects of Yaz were ruining my life, I discontinued that two months after getting the Mirena and the difference is night and day with my moods. I was almost suicidal, now my moods better and the PMDD under control through Yoga, meditation and breathing.

Problem is that because all of this I have gained 20 lbs I havent been able to lose (I am a personal trainer, so I am extremely active and eat very healthy so its not me being a couch potato) and I have not stopped bleeding.

I have been bleeding for a year, I have no doctor because I refuse to return to her and I am desperate. Finding a good OBGYN is almost impossible where I live. Mirena was not the answer and now I am just crushed to see that the bleeding is a common problem and until I get this removed my life will not even come close to being normal. I can't believe all of these side effects are not a secret yet the Doctors fail to communicate this.

Mirena madness! Let me share my lovely story...I turned 40 last December. I had my tubes tied/cut/clamped...in 2003. I have been in a long term relationship all of this time...and then, somehow...I got pregnant. Go figure. Anyhow, I ended up miscarrying so I asked about getting the mirena to prevent this from happening again. I honestly thought I would die while they inserted the FIRST mirena. It was so painful. I went home and continued with crazy bleeding. This was June...I had the mirena just about 2 months and I started having some serious cramping and my mirena expelled itself. MORE bleeding. Went back to the the GYN and had #2 put in...not as bad as the first. And now it is Oct. 1 and I am still bleeding. I have had 4 days since this all began in June without any spotting or bleeding. I keep praying for it to end...and I gained 8 lbs since I got this second one. :-(
Good luck to all who take on this wonderful invention.

This was helpful to find. I've had my Mirena in for approx. 4 years or so. It's due to come out in the Spring next year. I'm also experiencing little to no period but spotting often. My problem is this. My abdomen feels bloated and sore often. I have loads of gas. I'm beginning to wonder if the lack of periods is building up within my uterus and causing the pain and discomfort I'm experiencing. I've spent a few hours looking online for answers and havn't found anything yet. Curious if I'm alone, should I look to get this removed sooner then Spring? I'm 40 and don't want to get pregnant, so I do love the advantages of the Mirena. Love Love Love the lack of periods but have to say it's beginning to concern me: "What am I really doing to my body".

I have had my Mirena inserted 01-2008. It was rough in the beginning and then about a year after it was placed I didn't have a period at all with an occassion of spotting for a day or two. But just recently I have been spotting all month. I'm not sure why the change but its beginning to suck. Hopefully it will stop soon, it hasn't been heavy at all and I haven't had any of the brown discharge just spotting so I'm hoping everything is okay, but definiately sucks with the lack of sex.

I had Mirena inserted about 15 days ago and till now I am either bleeding heavily or spotting. I am 48 years old. OBGYN has now put me on TRAPIC but kept telling me that it will be alright within 3 weeks. I was given an impression that I will get occassional spotting in between periods till the 2nd month after insertion due to adjustment by MIRENA. I was under the impression that my problem is unique till I discovered this page.

>;) Well, I will have had this thing in for 2 and a half years. When I was on the pill, I would virtually have two periods a month. I was happy when my doctor told me I might lose them all together with the mirena. But, like the others, I go from bright red to brown discharge. This sometimes occurs every ten days. My procedure was VERY painful because I have a small cervix, so I had to have it dilated and numbed. But the doctor didn't wait long enough for the numbness to start. I wonder if that is why I have more of the bright red discharge than the brown as most of the other replies have said. As with another post, if I have sex, it can trigger the bleeding the next day.

I have had the Mirena IUD for about 8 months now and have experienced the same problems - I have found that regular acupuncture helps to suspend the bleeding for a week or two - but stress, fatigue and sex will all trigger it again. Am glad to find this site and others who are experiencing the same problems...was beginning to worry that there was something wrong with me. Although I do know a couple of women who have lost their periods altogether while on Mirena - I am not one of them - and beginning to wonder if this is really worth it. But with heavy periods...and spotting between periods even on the pill - I'm not sure what the alternative is at this point.

I just got the mirena a month ago..I was wondering if something was wrong because I'm still having this brown nasty discharge a month later. But according to all of u it never stops. That's great..a very painful insertion for nothing. It is nice not having to take a pill, but atleast on the pill I didn't have discharge all day everyday. This is ridiculous what woman wants this nasty brown c**p coming out of them all day. Talk about make you feel gross. So if it's true that most woman experience this discharge the entire course of the mirena then I think I'm just better off getting it removed early and going back on the pill huh.

Ok... Thank goodness to women who want answers. I too thought I was the only one having these problems. Especially that smelly discharge. Mirena has put such a burden on my sex life because I bleed heavy after sex even worse when I climax and then a few days following. I go through panty liners like crazy and I always feel uncomfortable and not fresh. I've only had Mirena since August 2010 and I want it gone already. I've had significant weight gain even though I've had no change in diet or routine. This thing has got to go. I'm setting an appointment this week. I can't take it anymore!! :'( It's making my life miserable. I thought I would have a piece of mind because I'm a single parent going to school and work. It would be nice not to have to worry about an unplanned pregnancy. But I'd rather go back to the patch because I always forget pills. -smh- Mirena is a good idea but too many life altering side effects.

I've had 4 children and have tried the mirena before for 3 months. After the whole 3 months of either having a light to medium period i gave up!! I've just had another one fitted, thinking that i was just unlucky the first time. Well, it's been 12 weeks now and i have had 3 whole days of not bleeding. it's either been light to medium every day, or heavy - without clots, when my period is actually due. although my period is normally 10 days long, i can tell by my body that i'm on for about 3 weeks on the mirena. i've had enough already!!! they want me to try it for 6 months but to be honest i've had enough!!!
