This is also happening to me MJ - and no sex either due to embarrassment. I had the Mirena inserted early Oct 2012. I just turned 52 then. Last year my doc told me I should be going thru menopause by now and checked my hormone levels. They were going down (80 down to 40) even so, I was reluctantly taken off the pill. The hot-flushes came on & off but no periods for nearly a year but then I had 3 in a row exactly 1 month apart for one week. After mentioning to my doc, he sent me to a gyno to see why and she talked me into putting the Mirena in, mainly as I was told it would stop my periods for 5yrs. Since it was put in 20 days ago I haven't stopped bleeding. Constantly bright red, heavier some days then light again.

I'm off for a pelvic scan today to see if it's dislodged but whatever they say I'm still getting it taken out. They are saying I will possibly be having a dilatation and curettage as well to see why I'm bleeding so much. W.T.F. (I figure I know why) After reading all of these posts I wish I had checked it out before I was talked into it by a very young gyno.

I've had my Mirena for a little over a year to help w/spotting and heavy periods. For the first few months, I felt pretty good - no period, no spotting, no cramping. I'm 51 this month. However, for the past few months, I've noticed that my pants and skirts feel tight (I don't have a scale) and I am exceedingly bloated and experience gas pains on a daily basis. I attribute all this to the Mirena as nothing else has changed in my life and I'm athletic and healthy. Last spring I had a colonoscopy and an ultrasound to help rule out anything colon-related and possibly ovarian-related. I've not been spotting for two straight weeks, have terrible daily cramps and am bloated. Oh, yes, I also have experienced mood swings. I'm thinking about removing the iud as I'm not sure I want to wait until I'm definitely not fertile (2-3 yrs?). All your comments are definitely food for thought.

I had the Mirena inserted 4.5 years ago when I was 18. I'm 23 now. For the first 4 months or so, I was spotting, but it wasn't a huge issue. For the next 3 years it was great, I didn't have any periods at all. But for the past 6 months or so, I have been spotting like crazy, and I have long periods (like 7 or 8 days) about every 2 to 3 weeks. I feel like I'm on my period all the time! It never stops. I'm considering getting it taken out, and replacing it with the IUD without hormones -- Paragard.

However, I did not gain weight like a lot of the previous posters have. In fact, when I went to Europe for a vacation, I lost weight (a lot of walking!), and it's been easy to keep it off, I don't even have to try.

I just had Mirena inserted a month ago...same case as some of you; spotting and disgusting, smelly, brown discharge. It literally makes me naseous just to change my pantyliner. The smell is horrid. I was on the depo shot before and it was amazing, best thing I had ever done for myself. However, my doctor wanted me to take a break from it, then talked me into this stupid IUD. I don't feel like myself, and I can relate with some of you, it's definitely taken a toll on my sexlife.

I had my mirena inserted in jan 2012 for my endometriosis problem. It really did help in removing my pain but I keep having spotting or white discharge on an everyday basis which really hampers my physical movements to a large extent which is very irritating but as it is helping with my pain I am trying to take it in my stride.

I had the mirena inserted in 2009.  About 18 months ago I started to develop some issues with spotting, heavier periods, and cysts.  My ultrasounds and pap smears always came back normal and was diagnosed pre-menopausal and hormone changes.  In December 2012 I spotted for 30 days. In January I had more tests done and my annual which once again came back normal.  It also included a hormone test which came back normal also.  They removed the IUD and the spotting went away within 24 hours.  My doctor is now 100% sure that the mirena was the culprit after suffering for almost 18 months of spotting and heavy periods.

I got my mirena put in about a year after I had my daughter so it would have been late 2010. Since having it put in I have had nothing but problems...gaining wieght, non stop bleeding, cramps, back aches you name it.  The bleeding never really stops. It is the same brown discharge that most everyone is talking about. I am having mine taken out at the end of the month because it has killed my sex life. It is so humiliating to constantly have this going on. Think i'm just going to stick to condoms since i suck at taking the pill and I have heard to many things about the depo shot

Im on my 2nd mirena. Boy are they ridiculously painful to insert. The 1st go round my cycle stopped entirely( it was wonderful) but I have terrible cramps and pains. I had to have several xrays to make sure it hadnt gone through and organ. I finally got sick of the pain and had it removed and went on the pill. Cycles returned etc etc. I decided to go back on mirena. I have had light random irony spotting ever since and it sucks. Its like a very light period and comes whenever it wants- very random. I agree wearing a liner everyday would be a pain. Im thinking a womans body can respond differently. I have a friend who also has mirena, and her cycles never stopped

I know what your talking about. Id rate the odor as a rusty penny iron smell. Possibly you've gotten an infection from the mirena If its a bad nauseating odor . Have you gone back to the dr?

I would definitly go to the gyn. With my 1st mirena my periods went away completly. My 1st mirena caused me so much pain. Weird stabbing pains and cramps in the ovary area. I had several ultrasounds but it was in place still. The dr just said it was a possible side effect. I had it removed finally and began the pill. Within 6 months of taking the pill religiously it failed me, though Im happy to have my son, if i had kept the mirena in I wouldnt have gotten pregnant. I had another mirena inserted afterward. I dont have much pain but random spotting. You may want to try paragard, its hormone free and good for 10yrs but you will have periods since its hormone free- good luck and definitly see the gyn asap
