Hi all, I wanted to share my experience in case anyone is in a similar situation. I have spotted on and off since getting Mirena over a year ago. I spotted every day for the first 3 months and then it cleared up (mostly) for several months, before starting up again a year after insertion. My doctor suggested that my uterine lining wasn't completely thinned on its own and that going back on the pill for a few months would likely 1) stop the spotting pretty immediately and 2) cause me to have a period again that would hopefully help my uterus flush the lining to prevent future spotting.
I hated the idea of taking the pill again but was tired of the bleeding. Within 2-3 days my spotting had completely stopped and hasn't been back in 3 weeks. It is the cleanest I have felt since getting Mirena. I have yet to test whether this will prevent my spotting once I stop taking the pill (my doctor prescribed 3 months), but it is definitely worth a try, especially since my doctor was spot-on (pun alert) about it stopping my spotting.
It's no fun taking the pill, but I will say it is a lot less stressful for me because I know if I do miss a pill or am not perfect with my timing I don't have to worry about pregnancy because I also have the IUD. If you think you can stand it, it might be worth suggesting to your doctor. We'll see what happens when I go off the pill again...

I had the Mirena since May 2017. I continue to also have spotting for two to three days every 10 to 15 days. It’s a brown smelly discharge. I also experience a sharp pain in my low back since inserting the Mirena. I’m going to give it until May 2018, one year. If symptoms do not subside, I’m getting it removed.

I'm on my 3rd Mirena, 11 years now. My doctor said maybe the 3rd time would be the charm but no. I've been spotting non-stop for 6 weeks and in between spotting, I get my period. I'm in pain, I'm bloated, I have a headache, I just want it to end. I'm pretty sure the only way it will is if I have it removed for good. I'm completely miserable and I don't even want to have sex. Yay Mirena!!!!

I have had Mirena for a year now and it has been an ok experience. I would getting spotting monthly lasting about 2-3 weeks until I started taking ibuprofen at the first drop. It worked but I was not sure if I should continue taking three pills for 5days whenever spotting occurred. For the last three weeks I have been seeing more spotting coming and going with now cramps. I don't plan to have it removed just yet but it's annoying.
