The "strings" that hang out of the uterus into the vagina were probably cut too short. My gyn actually showed me an example... Because the strings are sort of like teeny tiny wires, the shorter u cut them the "pokier" or more "stabbing" you will feel. If they are cut longer there is more slack and they are more free flowing, also the softer they will be.

I have had the Mirena for almost 2 years and everyone that is talking about the pokey strings is correct.  My doctor left mine longer and my boyfriend doesn't feel them at all.  At least not poking.  So if yours are too short, you might want to go in and get it redone.  It's much easier to shorten them if they become a problem.  I do have cramping though after sex.  I think because he hits my cervix it makes me wonder if it's altering the position of the IUD but sometimes we can be pretty rough, so I think he just angers my cervix a little.  The good thing about this form of birth control is, it can easily be removed and there is alternate birth control methods.  It's just about weighing the options and the advantages and disadvantages of each one and chosing what you would prefer to deal with.

So for those of you complaining that it's poking, the strings are definitely too short.  I have felt around to see if I could feel mine and they are nicely wrapped around my cervixal wall.  I have had no problems with them at all.

Hi, I am a guy whose wife has had this IUD inserted and yes it has made sex a very painful experience. Like she has put a couple of toothpicks up inside her. it makes sex very painful.takes all the joy out of something that should be pleasureable an intimate.  Some positions are slightly better and I do mean slightly.

I thought I was crazy. I have started to experience cramping so bad after sex that I thought I was possibly in labor. I have had my mirena for about 2.5 years now and i am just starting to experience this. Thanks everyone for posting this has helped in my decision to have it removed.

Wow... This is clearly all connected to the IUD. My fiancé and I had a baby girl January of 2012.. She had IUD put in soon after. Honestly the possible IUD side effects not to mention how easy it can move, make it a joke... She's getting it tsken out ASAP. Anyway, before our first child we had alot alot of sex/fun so u could say we both were in good sex shape, now with being so busy we've slowed down but still do it regularly.. So in general I've been able to "hurt" her since we've been having sex, so a little pain from her is normal.. Pretty normal for any girl I've encountered I've been told I'm lucky.. But after the IUD... Sex is missssery... She is tighter in general due to lack of action relative to before.. So it being difficult to squeeze in and pain is normal but wow.. I try to get in and its as if there are ninjas with swords stabbing my penis telling me to not enter. Thou shall not pass! Haha.. Its like if I ever wNt to even do it.. I have to like hold my breath and go super fast and take that sharp pain.. Which quick and fast is not my style nor any fun for us ;( .. We just had sex last night... I got "carried away" and went in for the gusto... Now today her lower abdomen is like bulging out and she's in cramping pain.. But hasn't had a period while on the mirena.. We have had similar style sex recently and she was sore but it wasn't like this so I do think its something weird... I'm worried about her so any experience or replies.. E mail me thanks!!

It's not just "rough sex" I have been f*cked harder than you can imagine, and it was the only way I would enjoy intercourse... Now, with this IUD in, my husband has to take slow, gentle strokes, or it nearly brings me to tears... Some positions, I can't even handle, no matter how gentle he is being. What a drag.... I have had mine in since Oct. 2012... Does this pain eventually subside, or am I destined for Vanilla Sex for the rest of its duration?

i have had Painful sex with my Mirena IUD also. had my daughter in May got my IUD in July.  my husband is somewhat large but it never hurt before the iud. We asked the doctor but they said it was Probably just because i was dry... we tried lubricant and estrogen cream either worked. It feels like a sharp stabbing pain when he enters halfway. sex is so painful i dont even want to think about it!!  I am going to the doctor tomorrow to get this thing removed!!! probably going to get the Depo-provera shot.

Hi, my boyfriend says the same thing. What it is, is that string they showed you during insertion? It's sitting on her cervix. Over time it will soften and you won't be able to feel it. For right now though, stick to positions that won't be doing deep penetration. It's obviously uncomfortable for you!

I have the same problem with painful sex after I got the Mirena. I have not had any children but was recommended by the doctor to get it anyways and so I agreed that maybe it would be the best. I also have light bleeding after sex and pain for a few days after. I got my wires cut and retucked back up by the IUD and haven't had any problems with poking since, but I don't know if I should get it removed, because sex shouldn't be painful. Other than sexual intercourse I haven't had any problems with it though, I have actually been able to lose a little weight where I gained on other kinds of birth control and my periods are very light which is nice. I just like you said before don't want tearing or to be damaging my uterus.

If you find out anything else out let me know.

The doctor left the string too long this is an easy fix, all she needs to do is inform the doctor and he will shorten it. Sounds like you're to blessed. LOL Good luck!
