I have had the Mirena IUD for about two and half years and never really had any problems until recently or at least noticed them. It all started with this odor that was just horrible and I have never had an odor in 25 years of my life, nothing. It was so bad that I went to go get tested freaking out thinking that some how I had contracted a disease. The doctor laughed and said that it was nothing, just your standard blatter infection. After taking the antibiotics some of the smell has gone away but, there is still a lingering smell that I can smell nearly all of the time. I am so self conscious and bothered by it. I have asked my friends if with age if they had these problems and no they havent. I also have had an emense amount of mood swings or when I am angry having no sympathy and just being evil. And the back pain, my back has been in horrible pain for two in a half years and when I had my child, I had him all natural so there is no chance that something hurt it during labor. I am getting my IUD out next week. I thought that this was the best birth control and I was wrong, nothing is worth this pain. Having my son naturally didnt hurt this bad or smell this bad!!! LOL!!!

Hi All,
I've had my Mirena for about nine months and am very happy with it. Reading on message boards about side effects scared me quite a bit before I had it put in. The weight gain and depression were particularly frightening to me, but I have not suffered from either of those. The only change for me (other than a much lighter period: bonus!) is occassional cramping in the middle of the month and occassional slight discomfort after sex.
It's different for everyone, I suppose, but for me, it's been a great BC method.

I am very amazed (actually I'm not) of what I'm reading. I do, however, feel like a big, dumb, dummy. I got on line to inquire about how my period is suppoed to be while using the IUD. I started off spotting and not having a period @ all when I first got it (16 months ago). I have just started noticing a huge difference in the last 4 months or so. I am starting to have a period for a day or so, it stops and reconvenes in a few days or so. The doctor said that it was normal. The information that I've gathered have me flabbergasted. I usually research and investigate the big things that I set out to do or buy, but I did not research this. I was tired of the Depo Shot (which really put the pounds on & had me taking herbs to have a sex drive like I did prior to getting the shot). I have had the IUD for 16 months now and the only side affect that I thought I had was my cycle irregularities...until I landed on this website. The doctors surely don't tell it all when u ask what the side affects r. I don't understand it. I have a lot of the symptoms that you mentioned and just figured that the problems of life is doing it to me. I have never had a hard time dealing with problems before and never tied it into the mirena (simply because I had no knowledge of the side affects). I just thought that my problems were just wearing me down. I was suprised in my own self. Anyway, I have a question since reading this: Do the iud also prevent you from sleeping. At first, when I had my baby 18 months ago, I was up all the time @ night and found it difficult to sleep...thought it was just the baby keeping me up and I would get back to normal. To this day I dont sleep through the night. I blamed it on my problems. Depression that I am currently going through was also blamed on my problems. Now, if u have depression issues with no problems, I might need to rethink this whole IUD thing. I have not had suicidal thoughts and Lord knows I don't want to get there.

i got the mirena in April 2009 and i've experienced the strange odor as well. I don't know what to do about it. I use the feminine wipes during the day but that doesn't seem to help. Its nasty. Some days are worst than others.. i don't know what to do....

I have had the mirena for 3 years. I hate it. I have never been in so much pain in my life. It's kind of ridiculous. I don't hardly sleep. I have this horrible pain that comes out of no where on my right groin area. The pain shoots down my leg and I can't even walk. I had been to the doctor many times for it. Told me it might be an injured nerve. Gave me a shot of cortizone in my side. Then I started to figure it out that I would get this horrific pain every time I ovulated. Then it came so bad one day that I had to have my sister in law drive me to the hospital. They didn't find anything. They did x-rays, a pelvic all the good stuff and nothing. Just told me to go see my family doctor. So I did the next day. She scheduled me for a cat scan. Still nothing no idea what causes this pain. So she sent me to an orthopedic doctor and they took x-rays and again...nothing. This doctor wanted me to go to physical therapy for 3 weeks. Sorry, but I don't have the money to do that even with insurance with all the money I already spent on the hospital and the cat scan in the past month. I started to think that it is the mirena. I have acne on my face and back. I am 31 years old and shouldn't have this, but I am tired all the time. Myjoints hurt constantly, I can't lose any weight and gained probably 30 pounds since I got this terrible thing. I just want my life back. I don't ever feel like doing anything. I just want to be alone all the time. I think my husband is probably going to leave me half the time. So after reading all of these symptoms I made an appointment with my doctor wednesday to get it taken out. I can't wait. Also I bleed and spot all the time. 3 years and I have about a week and a half when I am not beeding or spotting out of the month. Horrible.

I had Mirena for year and half. a year after having it i started getting CHRONIC MUSCLE PAINS, SEVERE CHRONIC UPPER BACK PAIN, mainly left side, SHOULDER PAIN, mainly only left shoulder, NO SEX DRIVE, ANXIETY, INSOMNIA, CHEST PAIN, BREAST PAINS, nAUSEA IN CAR RIDES, DAILY NAUSEA FOR 5 MONTHS, LOSS of menstruation immediatly after insertion, i never had a cramp in my uterus at all though, and no bleeding, i thought i was gonna die from the pain all over my upper body!! Been to chiropractor, cardiologist, Emergency rooms twice, Primary drs.. all my tests were fine !!! i am only 28 yrs old. i have 2 and 3 year old. i am a physical person and out of no where i cant even mop the floor without crying the whole night of burning muscle pains. the ob said its not related to Mirena. i even quit my job., that didnt help me get better.. I know it is Mirena that caused all that because as soon as i took Mirena IUD out i was getting better after 24 hours.. getting better day by day, i use to have to take advil everytime i left the house. muscle relaxers and 4 advils at once just to sleep....Now that the stupid MIRENA is out i can sleep breath and move with out taking medicine !!! WHAt a BIG RELEIF !!! IT WAS FOR SURE GONNA KILL ME...i never would recomend it to anyone!!! At least my dr did say some people are sensitive to having foreign objects in there body, i for sure could never get that again !!!!! I suffered for 9 months until i removed it. i also heard it takes a month for the body to go back to normal so i am taking it easy til then. but i for sure feel better now that its our. my shoulder pain went away immediatly !!! PS my symptoms started 6 months to a year after it was inserted!!

I have had the mirena only for about a month. But I haven't stopped bleeding since the day I got it in! I know spotting is normal and I was expecting it for the first 4 months as my ob told me but it's like a full period. After having my second child I hemoraged really badly and lost 3 litres of blood the first night and have had high blood pressure since. Could this be why the bleeding is different for me? I wanted to have a tubal ligation but my ob said I am too young and that the IUD is the next best thing. Before I started birth control I had extremely bad periods that caused fainting vomiting diahrrea head aches you name it. I chose the IUD because it was supposed to help with this not cause my symptoms to be worse.
How long did the bleeding last once it was first inserted for everyone else?

I got my IUD replace with the new Mirena last April and can relate to everything you have posted. Occassionally I get this discharge with a strange odor. It makes me self conscious because I feel like others can smell me and I can't wait to reach my home so I can shower. However, It has been slowing down. I'm not getting it as often as before. Now I notice I'm getting it before and after my period but not every month. It's a very uncomfortable feeling. I'm going to continue researching this and if I find anything new I'll post it.

I have had my IUD in for about 1 1/2 yrs to help w/ the migranes I was having. But my OBGYN did not want me to pull my plumbing out. Now, for the past 6 - 7 mo.'s I have been having severe abdominal pain. I went back in Oct. to my OBGYN, she found nothing wrong after I told her my symptoms. Superbowl Sunday I spent 6 hrs in the ER, got a CAT scan - found nothing!! They suggested I see a GI and not lift anything over 10 lbs for 7 days. Saw the GI and did the colonoscopy today --found nothing again!? I guess the next thing is to have this removed. But everyone says the Mirena is looking good. My husband and I are/were thinking it is/was a hernia along the incision from where I had my daughter 22 mo's ago. But after reading these post I am really starting to think twice about my IUD. I have also had the memory loss, hot flashes, hives, very severe abdominal pain (not cramping - like to marbles are trying to leave my body), pain on the left side of my lower stomache, pain in the groin like it is on fire, lower sex drive, not sleeping well. I have not had a peroid since 10/08 just some very light spotting here and there (which is awesome), mild headaches, no more hormonoal migranes (which run in the family). I am really not sure what to do. Pull the thing out and get the migranes that take me out for days at a time or live w/ the lower pain.

I've had the Mirena IUD for over 2 years now. About 5 months ago my breast underneath have become real real sore and it hurts to even take my bra off. My daughter is 2 and if she touches them I am in pain badly. I've been to my OBGYN 2 times and he says that there is nothing wrong with my breast. He referred me to a physical therapist to check about having a breast reduction. Now that I've have read this I'm thinking thats not what I need LOL! Has any one else experienced breast pain like this?

I'm really worried. %-)

i wonder if any1 can help me, i have had my merina in for just over a month. i have experienced a few symtoms for the 1st 3 weeks, spotting and cramping. but i havent had my period this month and it was supposed to come a week ago. but what concerns me is that i was able to feel the strings of the mirena quiet a bit in the begining. About 3 weeks after insertion i could feel the strings very slightly, and seems only during times that i was spotting, as if it had been 'pushed' further up into me.. maybe through intercourse...? is this possible? i can no longer feel the strings and am quiet certain that the mirena hasnt been expelled. that i do think i would definatly notice.
i have scheduled to see my gyne tomorrow for a follow up check up. but am still worried about this...
