Our hearts are torn as our daughter in law just miscarried today and with no explanations i began searching the web and ran across your post. This is exactly what happened to her. Why do they do that! My son is so upset as we all are, but he is ready to storm the dr office. So sad.

A sudden bleeding started when I was 11weeks pregnant. However, it lasted for less than an hour.I thought everything is okay so far. When I went to OBGYN and they insisted me to have a pap test which was very uncomfortable. But I thought, may be it is the best thing to do for knowing the source of bleeding. However, nothing serious happened after that, only spotting. Within 24 hours or next morning I discovered that I was having heavy bleeding and passing lots of blood clots. Then I went to hospital emergency and they told me that I miscarried! :(

This post freaked me out, but I thought I would give hope to some people who have not yet received official confirmation from the doctor about miscarriage.

This thread and others like it seem to show a correlation between pap smears and miscarriages.  Like almost everybody else, my wife had a pap smear and then two days afterwards had a significant amount of bleeding, consistent with the color and mucous discharges that you all have shared, including what might have been the actual expulsion of the embryo. She also experienced loss of symptoms of pregnancy like lessened nausea, return to normal of appetite, and less tenderness of the breasts, and lots of urination. We thought he body was cleaning itself out from the pregnancy and starting to return to the pre-pregnant state. We were all certain we had lost our baby of 8 weeks.

The next day we went back to the gynecologist that performed the pap smear, and sometime thru the tense examination the sonogram display screen was turned on and we saw the baby, heard the heartbeat, and were assured everything was normal and healthy. The cervical bleeding was treated with silver nitrate, and the symptoms were explained to us that they resulted from some past uterine/cervical work performed on my wife. This is her first pregnancy and has some risk factors including older age (38) and being overweight.

Anyways... if anybody out there is reading this and is frightened that they have miscarried after a pap smear, try to temper those emotions and make sure to contact your doctor ASAP and get examined. Maybe you will be one of the lucky ones.

It's still very troubling to read of these correlating posts, and I believe more research and better communication between the medical community and expecting parents needs to take place. Just remember that no matter what, have a doctor examine you if you are worried. The worst thing would be to do nothing. Blessings.

Same Here! Never had any bleeding before with a pap but at 6weeks had my 1st appt and pap smear and almost immediately started bleeding. Miscarried that baby. My close friend had the exact same thing happen to her. Never again. I have always refused the pap ever since! It's not worth the risk for me

Thank You for your post. I cannot shake this idea that the papsmear caused my miscarriage too. I was in to see doc the day before I was ten weeks and heard a great heart beat on Wednesday July 1st. The next night I had severe cramping that continued into the following day. Felt somewhat ok cramping not as bad on Saturday and Sunday I was spotting and went to ER and found out there was no longer a heartbeat. I do not blame doc. I don't think they even notice the coincidences, but I DO and will never have another papsmear while pregnant. I have never had an abnormal pap and do have no sexually transmitted diseases. One partner ever and so has he. This has been such an emotional time and to think it could have been prevented.

This happened to me too last year. I miscarried two days after having a pap smear. I was abour 7 weeks. I have had three healthy pregnancy, but never had a pap smear that early in my previous pregnancies. This was a a new obgyn I went too and wanted to start my prenatal as soon as I found out as I was pregnant. When I went for my appointment, she did not do an ultrasound because she didn't think it was necessary to do it that day but instead proceeded to do a pap smear and it was very painful to the pain I had tears but thought it was normal and didn't complain. Two days later when I was at work, I went to use the bathroom and noticed I was a few blood spots. I knew something was wrong because I had never bled or had complications in any of my previous pregnancies. I went to the hospital later that night and was told that my hormones level had dropped and was diagnosed with a blyted ovom. I was heart broken. I didn't make the connection to the pap smear then, until a few months ago when I was pregnant again and decided not to proceed with the pregnancy due to health reasons, and the procedure felt just like a pap smear. I didn't experience any bleeding until two days laters. I was more so spotting brown blood. That's when I thought back about the miscarriage and how it happened after the pap smear. I hope they do more research into this and doctors warn patients about any potential risk pap smear may cause to a pregnancy.

I am 40 years old with a 21 year old and a 19 year old. On our first year anniversary, my husband and I discovered we were expecting. Everything was going smoothly and I made my first prenatal appointment, which occurred yesterday. Like most of you here, the doctor was extremely rough with me while doing the internal exam. He stated that everything looked fine and gave me my projected due date. He stated i was in perfect health and not a high risk pregnancy. Before the appointment, I had no pain or bleeding. Immediately following my visit, I began spotting. My sister, who is in the medical field, advised that it was normal and not to worry. This morning I got out of bed to get ready for work, and a gush of fluid ran down both legs with a trail all the way to the bathroom. I immediately called for an ambulance. Another internal exam as well as external and vaginal ultrasound were performed. I was bleeding heavy and cramping as if in labor. Hours later they told me I had miscarried. I truly feel the doctors rough internal exam is the cause. I am still hurting in the areas he examed. I am devestated and am ready to seek retribution for the loss of this precious life. Can anyone lend advise on how to seek counsel? Any help is greatly appreciated. If I can save even one other woman from such a tragic loss, it is well worth it.

Hi. Im doing some research as i too i have a strong feeling that a recent pap caused me to miscarry this wknd. During my pregnancies with my other two children my doc never performed a pap and i went on to have healthy normal pregnancies. But with my recent pregnancy i swithched docs because of location. This new doc did a pap on thursday and i miscarried before the weekend was out. I was having no issues and baby had a strong heatbeat prior to that. I remember saying "ouch" during the pap - something ive never said during an anual but it was extremly uncomfortable. The doc told me that i would bleed a little but that it was normal and would stop. However once the bleeding started IT NEVER STOPPED and within 2 days my babys heartbeat was no longer detectable and a few hours after i completly miscarried... This is still so unbeliveable and the most troubling part is that i cannot understand why a pap was performed anyway after he was informed that i had a normal pap back in april of this year...??? I am angry, sad, and depressed. My family is in shambles because of this and i just cannot shake the fact that prior to the pap i was having a normal 8 week pregnancy... I will be returning to my trusted Ob/Gyn who does not belive in taking that risk on pregnant women. #womenagainststirrups

To be considered a correlation the doctors have to make a report every time to a health department that keeps track of medical correlations. I can promise you doctors Do Not do this, whether from negligence and their own belief of their God hood, or they don't want to deal with the ramifications. Our western medicine is invasive to the woman body, and we should seriously ask ourselves if there is even a 5% chance of a miscarriage and less than 1% chance of cancer which should you choose? That's a personal choice, not the doctors or some of those pushy nurses.

Just saw the Dr yesterday. Ultrasound indicates a healthy baby with a great heart beat. I started cramping and spotting and called the Nurse. They told me its normal and to wait it out because bleeding is normal after a pap smear. I have a high risk pregnancy and already lost twins two months ago. Im going to very upset if I lose this one due to a "routine check-up". I think there would be enough evidence to suport a lawsuit based upon all of the feedback on here. Just because a Dr says it safe, doesnt always mean it is...they find out many years after practice that many things are harmful.
