I am 41 yrs old and have experienced this problem since i was 39 yrs old... i also feel the heart beat sensation in my stomach.. if your thin that is normal to feel.. heavier people dont feel theirs though... the weird thing i kept feeling in my stomach was a incesional hernia.. caused from my c-section.... a hernia can cause you to feel weird things.. i kept losing allot of weight also and my DRs are just now listening to me.. i came from 121 lbs during pregnany to having my c-section, floating intestines.. now down to 80.2 lbs come to find out mine was a hernia and acid reflux... which both cause u to lose weight slowly.. i have had x-rays,cat scans galore with and w/out contrast, total body bone scans , MRI, ultrasounds pelvic exams, pap test done, colon test, light ran down my throat and many more test.. i went to so many Drs and they all kept telling me nothing was wrong its anxiety... so I never gave up and finally found a Gastrointestional DR. he said the hernia and acid reflux will cause all these symptoms.. be looked at by a stomach DR, not just your PCP or Emergecny Room DR. like i did... GL to u all.. now have to have surgery to have hernia removed..

I have the dame thing! A moveable lump when I lay down that I can push into place also has a pulse sometimes. I have been trying to figure it out and I found this article, seems normal. Hope I helped!

A. It is likely that you are feeling your own normal duodenal bulb with contraction as the intestine moves and contracts regularly around the abdomen region. This is more prominent in thin individuals.

However, if you have persistent discomfort over this region with other symptoms such as unknown weight loss, vomiting, passage of black stool, change in bowel habit and jaundice, a consultation with a gastroenterologist is recommended. In addition, other organs over this area include the liver, pancreas and transverse colon. Diseases of these other organs may need to be excluded if symptoms persist.

The pulsation that was felt is likely transmitted from the abdominal aorta (the central big artery that lies below the stomach which supplies blood to the abdominal organs).

Again, this is more prominently felt in thin individuals and is normal.

hey ok so i have pretty much the same thing a strange lump in my stomach on the left hand side, i can only feel it when im flat on my back and came almost push it up and down, i get funny little twinges sometimes when i press on it, however those twinges can start from my stomach and go all the way up my arm,not sure if it is link but i also get terrible cramps (similar to period pains) but a lot more intense and something can completely criple me, im pretty worried and going to the doctors later on today, so whatever i get told i'll be sure to pass on the rest of you, but would still be nice for now if anyone else can say they can pretty much match exactly what im feeling and if theres anything i should know to put my worries to rest for now. thank you. x

hi, i see this is an older chat but I googled exactly what I've been feeling for the past two years, and all of what you guys have talked about is what i feel in my abdomen area. right under the ribs, in the middle, and when laying down in the morning it usually pops up on the lower right side.  I have been to so many docs, and as the lumo moves througout the day and depending on position, i have not had a solid answer. i gave birth to my child 2.5 years ago, and lost aout 20 lbs within the 6 months following the delivery. Since then I have felt these "bumps" in abdo area.

anyone still have these? or what did yu find out?? thank you.

Ok guys, this is actually very normal and most people experience this in their life time. This is nothing to be worried about.
It is a bump that feels like a heartbeat. If it has risen to your rib cage or just below it then it can cause some problems such as loss of hunger, dizziness, possible vomiting, and discomfort. There is a way to bring it back to the normal position under your belly button.
1. Use a towel, Roll it up into a ball.
2. Place the Towel on the floor and lie directly on top of it with your belly button in the center.
3. Have Someone push one leg at a time towards your buttocks. ( Repeat a few times on each leg).
4. Also have someone step on your lower back area lightly. ( Both step 3 and 4 will cause discomfort and some pain)
5. Slowly turn over and see if it has re-located towards your belly button.
6. Don't move around to much and avoid running and other exercises as they can cause it to cramp and rise again. ( Only for a few days)

After these steps it should be back near your belly button, and any pains, loss of hunger and other symptoms associated with it should disappear.

So this is an ayurvedic remedy and it is called a tarn in India.  This is practiced in traditional medicine and it has happened to me a few times and following these steps you should be fine. It is basically caused by lots of pressure on stomach, such as intense exercise, and weight training.
It may seem that the steps I have given you wont work but try it out for yourself as i have taken the time to tell you how it is done.

I also have this! It was freaking me out, I'm 24, thought I might be pregnant. But, I also just lost a lot of weight, I'm thinner than ever. It happened before but not as obvious, then I didn't notice it. Ever since I got this thin everytime I lay down or put pressure on it I feel a pulse and just noticed I can move it around by applying pressure.

Must have something to do with losing weight?

I've had symptoms like this for 6 years.  My latest guess is that it is caused by Psoas muscles that are too tight.  I think these muscles are overworked by a lifestyle of sitting too much.  That causes the pelvis and the ribcage to hunch over the abdominal area.  If a lot of food is passing through, then everything presses against a nerve and makes the area feel numb or other symptoms.  I've found that these unpleasant symptoms coincide with those muscles being wound very tight, and that stretching them relieves the pressure some.  The only sure relief is to let the food pass, and prevent it by eating smaller meals, get plenty of rest, and stretch regularly.

All of this is non-professional guess.  My doctor suggested it could also be from not enough shoe support, compressing the vertebrae where the nerves for digestion travel.  His advice was orthopedic support (for my foot condition), and heated pads/yoga (for my spine condition).  For me, the condition was aggravated by an intolerance to trace amounts of onions, which caused further pressure and other allergy related short and long term symptoms.  That was identified through an elimination diet.

There are videos online for stretching the psoas/iliopsoas muscles, see if that helps.  I never knew about them until recently and it does feel good to relieve the tension.
