the doctor needs to do some culture lab on the stool. It could be a serious thing. He told me that if I saw mucus on my baby's stool to take the pamper right away, for tests. She was sick from diarreah but fortunately never got mucus in her stool. He said it was a rotavirus. And to cut the milk and just give her pedialyte.

My breastfed baby experienced a change in his bowel movements just after his 4 month immunisations. He went from doing a big poo every couple of days to doing up to 4 smaller poos per day. They appeared watery, mucusy and at times greenish. Just recently, I noticed that one nappy was streaked with a small amount of blood. I read that the mucusy appearance could be due to an increase in saliva that irritates the intestine. But now that I've seen blood, I'll certainly be consulting my GP. Get your baby checked out by a doctor if you're worried. At least this will put your mind at ease.

Hi, I am experiencing something similar with my 11 month old baby girl, (formula fed no reg milk) yesterday I checked her diaper, and she had no stool, just mucus with a tinge (streak) of blood, she seems to be doing fine (other than the congestion) energetic etc...I've taken her about the congestion twice to the Dr already consequently giving her 2 rounds of antibiotics, but nothing has helped and now this new symptom... I don't know what to do!

i have a 4mth old baby with same problem.mucous green/yellow poo a few times a day when he used to only go once every 2days.i wouldn't think its good for your baby to be pooping that many times a day as it is very easy for babies to get dehydrated.my first child never had that problem so i realy dont know if i should be worried.help.

I am having a similar experience right now. After my son had his 4 month immunizations, we came home and that night he had a fever of 102 and he had black diarrhea for three days. I contacted the doctor and we took him to her office and she said it was a reaction to the Rotavirus vaccine. She also tested the stool and found blood in it but she sent us home. His black diarrhea continued so I ended up taking him to the ER a few days later and they took an x-ray, a culture and bloodwork. The only thing they could tell me was that he had a slightly higher white blood cell count and his stool tested positive for blood again, but they sent us home with nothing. His dark greenish to black, mucousy diarrhea continued for almost two weeks so I took him to his doctor again and she is now setting us up for an appointment with a gastrointestinal specialist. What am I suppose to be doing? I keep wondering if I am doing something wrong and praying that my baby is alright. I don't get why they keep sending us home with nothing when they find blood in his stools. I just don't understand it. HELP! I don't know what to do.

I figured I was going crazy when I saw that my 6 mo baby girl was having slimey, green poop. This time, there was some blood. She's had a cold for a couple of weeks. Last week she vomited for an hour and was fine afterwards. I think a lot of what she's experiencing and all other babies is this: Babies swallow a lot of mucus when they're sick and teething. This is why older women say that it's "teething poop". I went to the Dr. last week and they said she was fine. After I saw the blood I was concerned. Then she pooped again and there was nothing. I think that their stomachs are sensitive enough that they cannot handle the mucus entering their tummies, thus irritating them and creating bloody stools from the acidity in the mucus. Mucus has a lot of acid in it. It can burn their little noses if it's left there. We usually think it's from wiping that irritates their skin, but it's not the mucus is the culprit. If your baby is not lethargic, there is nothing to worry about. Dr's are looking for a really sluggish, high fever baby to "label" them as "sick". If your baby is eating regularly, their eyes aren't sunken-in, and they seem to act normal, they're fine! Just stick it out, their stomachs will make the necessary adjustments.

I have the same toughts. My baby got her first dose of rotavirus vaccine and 10 days later she got sick. She was vomiting and had diarrhea. I don't believe it was a coincidence. She suffered for more than a week. Now she has a weird mucusy stools. I was not sure about my daughter getting this vaccine in first place, and now I regret she did. I have also decided that she will not get next two doses. I do not want to risk her getting sick again.

In response to:
"My 4 1/2 month old is also experiencing these same issues! My NON medical theory is "could this be associated/(side affect) with the ROTAVIRUS vaccine?" Have any of your babies has these yet? My son has had two of the doses.....YUK!

Just wondering? "

My 2 month old just got vaccinated 6 days ago, along with the new rotateq vaccine. He got a fever for the first 2 days post-vaccination. He's extra irritable and screams like he never did before and today, I noticed jelly-like mucous in his stools. His spit up also has mucous in it. He's breastfed and his stools are normally watery, but this time it was different. It concerned me so I called the doctor and the doctor said as long as there are "no blood in the stools, no fever, no abdominal pain" (how am I suppose to know besides him being fussy) it's nothing to worry about. I suspect the rotateq vaccine. My daughter didn't get the rotateq vaccine 1 year ago and she didn't have any of these symptoms. I wonder if I'm just a worry freak or if my doctor is just too relaxed.

To the other mommy's with similar situations...when did the mucousy stools go away?

I am so glad I found this board. My daughter started getting more BMs a few days after getting her 1st rotavirus vaccine. I believe it was 4-5 days but it may have been a bit longer. She normally goes once every 4-5 days and is exclusively BF. 7 days after vaccine it increased to 7 times a day and many of the BMs were green and mucusy. It has now been 13 days since her vaccine. Her BMs are down to about 4-5 a day with at least 2 of them all green mucus and the others mixed with the green mucus. Dr's office said that they have seen about 2 in 200 children experience this. What I want to know is how long is it going to last?

HI,

I wrote before that I suspected rotateq vaccine when my baby got sick. Well, it is a third week that she has this mucusy stools. It looks like jelly but it changed color from green to yellowish green. Other than that my baby looks and behaves healthy. I checked it with my doctor and she said it is probably stomach flu (my guess Rotavirus) and we have to be patient. I lost my patience couple days ago when I got really worried. I went to see the doctor again and now they will test my baby’s stool. I am expecting the results in 3-4 days.

Meanwhile, I learned about probiotics. They can restore balance in the digestive tract and they maintain good level of “good bacteria”. It is not a medication and you can get it without prescription. The one I got comes in form of capsules that you can open and stir the content into baby’s formula or mix it with small amount of water . I checked with my doctor and he said I can try it because it can only help and will not do any harm. You can check with you doctor and ask which one he/she recommends (there are some made for infants and kids).

By the way, I am so happy a have found this forum. It is the only place I have actually found some useful information.
