I finally did a search online to find out wtf is up with this crack and sure enough i'm not alone. Sometimes its too painful to crack and it absolutely kills me at the gym when I try to do dips. Recenty, it hasn't been that bad but I wish it would go away. At first I thought it was genetics because my dad's jaw cracks when eating and mine is just now starting to do that(just turned 27) Hopefully there is a solution..I didn't read all 11 pages.
I am VERY surprised to see that so many people have this problem; I thought I was the only one in the world to have this.
Well I'm 16 and I've been having this problem for three years now. One day I got up out of the bed and all of a sudden my chest cracked... It's been cracking ever since. It's very annoying too and it seems like its worst when I drink soda (I'm guessing because of the caffeine) and when I'm stressed.
Maybe one day the doctors will find out what the heck this is.
Take care everyone and Happy Cracking. <--- Totally not funny.

this same thing started happening after i quit working out this summer.
So is there a set diagnosis for this or should I still see the doctor. I've had this for 2-3 years now and its recently been getting worse.. Needs to be cracked about 7-10 times a day and sometimes it sounds like a bone is snapping its so loud. It doesnt hurt, but it doesnt tickle either
I'm sure its from one of the things I do.. football, martial arts, bad posture, lifting?

I've noticed that most of the people on this blog are into physical fitness. Maybe that has something to do with it. I am a runner and have just noticed my sternum cracking in the last year. It was pretty strange the first time I felt it. My brother is a chiropractor so I will try to get a hold of him and ask him his advice or suggestions on what this might be. So far everyone else who hasn't experienced this just gives me a crazy look.

Cracking Sternum
I have had the same problem. it lasted about 6-8months but i realised what it was from and how to fix it. My problem- I had been training chest in the gym for about 2 years straight and only bothered training back when i could be bothered or had the time but now since i have started taking body building seriously i train back as much or if not more then i train chest and this have fixed my sternum cracking and pop issues for now. To every one chest workout I train two back workouts... this has fixed the problem and it has even given me a much better posture. Hope this helps some people out because i know how painful it can be. enjoy!
O MY GOD!! THATS EXACTLY WHAT I HAVE.
especially when i try doing tricep dips or when im doing pad-work at karate any impact on my chest hurts...
before i used to....
when im on the computer for a while i stand up lean back spread my shoulders, streach and 'crack!!''
but now i feel my chest and its not straight there its like theres 2 bones overlapping.
MY ADVICE: DONT CRACK YOUR CHEST AND IMPROVE YOUR POSTURE. or like my youll end up with overlapping bones which isnt too painful unless u do sports.

I had this for ages. Think it was caused by lifting weights.
Sometimes felt tight at night, so I realised I was always fallinf asleep on my right side with the right side of my face on the pillow. Thought I would start sleeping in the opposite position than I used to, so with the left side of my face on the pillow and rolling over to my left. Amazingly, it felt alot better the next day and after a few weeks of doing this it is almost as good a it was before. Can lift weights again without any cracking. It occassionly still cracks once in a way, but there is no pain or tightness afterwards.
Hope this helps someone.

That's exactly what I'm going through. I don't know what it means, but maybe I should go to the docter any way is there anything that helps with the pain?
Hey!
Im not sure whether this topic is active anymore since last reply is over a year ago. However I wanted to throw it out there for you to maybe get some relief.
I was doing dips and felt i couldnt push myself up anymore, i tried harded until it cracked in the sternum. I felt pain sneezing, could not do any push ups or could even barely get out of bed.d However i saw this doctor explaining to me that i wrenched the joints connecting the ribs to the sternum. That would also cause my back pain.
So to resolve this, easy exercise with dragging/pulling motions to strengthen the back for support. Stretch chest muscles often. At first i had cracking sounds whenever i stretched out, i stopped my training immediately and were stretching and resting for 3 weeks, the cracking stopped and my body started to feel better.
tl;dr; Rest, easy exercise, you should not feel much pain training, stretch and more rest worked for me!

Hello everyone, I am not sure if this topic is still active, but just in case some of you are still out there looking for solutions to your sternum-cracking discomfort, I thought I'd talk about my own experience. Just like all of you, I ve experienced cracks in my sternum for a few months now. One thing you need to know is, no, it is not normal. Joints crack and it is perfectly fine, but your sternum isn't a joint. It is cartilage, just like the tip of your nose. It is not supposed to crack. Then why does it sometimes crack? Mostly because of muscular tensions in your upper back restricting the motion in your spine. And when the upper spine is "stuck", your sternum has no choice but to move a bit, because cartilage is somewhat flexible, even though it is not supposed to move, hence the inflammation and cracking. My advice to you all is try to see a chiropractor or osteopath to get your upper back moving again. Acupuncture/deep tissue massage can help as well by relaxing the inner muscles that are restricting your range of motion. Hope this helps!!
Hi everyone it almost 1month I got this cracking in my sternum ,its annoying caused i don't know if its normal or what and i don't know what im going to do to remove this cracking. I still believe that there's really a main reason to thisSo in my case before this crack happened I accidentally hurt my lower back because of jumping in the trumpoline i do x-ray but its say everything was ok until in the past few days I got this sore neck that I can feel the tightness of the muscle so I do massaged so the pain was gone but this came back in a few days and I still have it ,until now the pain connected to my shoulder which bother me a lot during night time and I got this back sore so i tried to twist my shoulder left and right and it cracks I feel good after that but later when I tried again its still cracking.
