I have noticed the same problem for about two years now, and I'm 26. I think it is because I sleep a lot, on my side, and exercise on and off.

I have started and stopped doing routine push-ups and weight lifting over the past couple years many many times, building mass, and loosing it. Seems I get the crack problem when I stop exercizing, althought I feel a pain sesation when I do excercize but its a good pain, if that makes sense.

I also am around 135 lbs., and I've been sleeping poorly on my side for the past couple years. I feel like my shoulders are being "pushed together" in front of my body when I sleep on my side, and over time this is causing a central issue in my sternum. I thought it would cause shoulder problems if anything, because I do sleep alot, but maybe this is it?

Hello Fellow Poppers-

So I thought I was the only one...my sternum just starreted popping/cracking in the past week. I work out on a semi-normal basis, am not overweight (have a slender frame), and pop my back regularly. I too find relief in pushing/pulling down on my sternum. When I pull down on my chest, it's almost as if it separates somewhere in there, pops, and then I have immediate relief. If you're a doctor with an answer, there are a lot of us sternum popping people out there that would like a simple explanation behind this.

Peace out my Popping Peeps.

Wow this is great i thought i was the only one with this curse. I Noticed the pain about 3 years ago one day i was getting out of bed and my sternum made that cracking noise since then it hapens from time to time. I do get pain some times but once i pop it it feels allot better. I told my doctor he told me it was nothing to worry about and said i should do some exercise.

I have had this for the past couple months as well. I lean back really far and sometimes it cracks. I also get a pain where my heart is in my ribs i push there and it cracks too. Not a big deal the cracking feels good but its when it wont crack thats bad.

Sometimes its to the point it gets hard to breath a little and then when I crack it I can breath better. I went to the doctor he said its good. (FYI my doctor is an id**t) This isn't normal and its not good.

Some people have had this for years? Doesn't seem like it just goes away. Does anyone else do it a few times a day?

OMG there are others! Mine has been cracking for over two years now and couldnt crack yesterday/was extremely sore. Went to the doc, she had no idea and sent me for X-Ray this morning. We'll see what they come back with but my money says they have no idea.

Wow, I can't believe there are so many crackers out there. My sternum has been bothering me for about 3 years. I think it's because I used to try to do all sorts of crazy gymnastic moves without propper training. My grandmom told me they were 'growing pains', but after three years I don't think that's the reason anymore. I'm 20 and it's getting really awful. When I don't crack it hurts, when I crack it hurts even more. The pain goes to my shoulders and back, and I can hardly pick up my cat some days. Three Advil doesn't do a thing. I went to the doctors... and all she could say to me was 'Just stop cracking.' Yes, I wish it were that easy lady. I'm setting up an appointment to see a chiapractor, and hopefully they can tell me something more useful.
Numbing the pain with meds is not good enough for me. I feel that when I take them, I'm hurting my sternum even more, because I can't feel what I'm doing to it.

Good luck fellow crackers.

Costochondritis lasts only a few months at most. I've been cracking for 2 years so it's not that. It started when I got back into lifting weights seriously after a few month layoff; dips did the damage. I've had to abandon exercise.

I've had 2 X-rays, a regular MRI, and a contrast MRI. The doctors say they're baffled too. My chiropractor said he can't do much but try to fix the back and hope that does it.

There's no hope for us.

I have had this problem and have come to the conclusion that it can be caused by a few reasons. One is an increase in body weight, the increased stress on your bodies frame causes inflamation. Second, is posture, this also cause strain on the frame. This is what caused the problem for me, I had a desk job sitting in front of a computer everyday with horrible posture. Now I stand all day every day and boom no more pain. My pain used to be really bad when I would go running but now that its gone i can run again. The third reason is a change in weight lifting. If you have been regularly lifting weights and then you suddenly stop the chest pain and cracking with set in as your muscles decrease in size.

I have the same problem. I had it for about six years and it seems to be getting worse, It is really anoying. I went to the Doctor and got X rays, stress test, blood test and everything looks good. I live with this pain and neves goes away, pills do not help. The only things the help relief the pain a little is when I cracked it. I am hoping someone has the cure for this c**p because is driving me CRAZY. :$

Great, good to know many people have this.. real bad to know that nobody has had a successful diagnosis of this.

Had mine for about 15yrs on and off. Started before I did any lifting but at 6'4 180 back then it wasn't fat. Always had an athletic build, lifting only made my torso look like a superman comic. Now in my late 30s I've got the Mr Incredible 300lbs gut to go with it all. So its not skinny, fat or lifting weights, or bad posture as I've never had that.

Sometimes the tightness gets somewhat more than usual had me worried that it was a heart thing. Varied docs say my heart and lungs are like an athlete but haven't exercised in 6yrs. Wondering if that might have something to do with it.
Oh yeah, I can't crack my chest with moving arms and shoulders.. I do it by pressing on it dead center somewhat lightly (above the Heimlich maneuver spot).

Thank GOD there are other people that have had this and are not diagnosed with some serious condition. BUT what scares me is that there is no diagnosis. Doctors don't know what it is.

I have yet to mention this to a doctor, because I just started noticing it this year. I have gained 15 lbs over the last 2 years, and I work out on and off. My posture isnt as good as it used to be- I used to take ballet. Now I sit in bed in front of my computer. I am a 23 y/o female... and I have had some breast growth over the past few years as well. So I think that it is a mixture of all of these things that is causing this problem. I am planning to lose the 15 lbs and work out on a more consistent basis. But as for the extra "weight" around my chest, cant do much about that. But hopefully this popping won't continue. It's really annoying, and it doesn't feel good for me! Neither does popping my knuckles- that hurts!

I have another problem and I don't know if it is related. I have a hard time taking a deep breath many times. I often have problems getting a deep breath on each breath, and I have to take 5-10 shallow breaths or hold my breath for a while (or yawn) until I can take one deep breath. It almost seems as if my chest is constricted and it only opens up and allows for a deep breath in intervals. I'm not a smoker; I have no injuries to the area.

Does anyone have a similar problem?

I have the same thing, though mine started 3 years ago when I was 24. I was tying up a rubbish sack, I must have strained something coz I heard/felt a crack along with a really hot pain in my sternum. It was sore for a while then went away. Ever since when I do things like lift my arms to tie my hair up my sternum cracks. When it doesnt crack for a while it gets a little uncomfortable like I need to crack it myself.
