My sternum has been cracking for about 2 years. I'm a runner and it all started after a really hard 5k. I feel like I have constant pressure directly on my sternum especially when I run. It's gotten so bad that I've had to stop running. Does anyone know whats going on with all of this?
When I type in my systems on google search; it always comes up Costoshondritis. which is a recurrent thing. It can be from a viral infection (upper respiratory/bronchitis) or past injury. I've not been to the doctor yet, because I had a breast augmentation 2 weeks ago. Silicone had been leaking out for years and wondering if this is related to that. The downer is it looks like there isn't anything you can do for it, besides heating pad and advil. What makes it hard to breath is the body is telling the lungs to not expand completely, because its trying to heal itself. I've noticed also, when Im stressed its worse, which is why alot of doctors prescribe muscle relaxers. May try the cortisone shot route, but also heard that can weaken cartilage. Driving, vacuuming, lifting my 9 lb dog, cold/rainy weather, stress and caffeine are all contributers. Great huh?
I think i know where is the source of this thing, is most of you doing weight lifting? if yes, then it is coming from there.
What everyone has desribed so far does sound like Costochodritis to me. I was diagnosed with it myself. I was never injured and I never pulled any muscle around my chest cavity, but one day I got a lot of pressure and tightness in my sternum and then I found out how to pop it. I would tilt my head and twist/bend my neck as far to the side as I could and/or lift my shoulder and it would seem to pop itself back in place and the pain would be gone. Usually Costo is caused by an injury or a repeptitive movement that stretches your cartilage surrounding your ribs/sternum. It can also be caused by a virus or other unknown things. Not to be too personal here, but as an overly endowed woman, I feel like mine was brought on by the weight of my chest. I think the alignment of my chest got out of whack because my ribs/sternum were having a hard time supporting that weight.
At least this condition isn't serious, although the pain sure feels like it at times.

im glad im not the only one with this problem, i have recently started getting cracking noises from my chest since i got a laptop and would work on my bed with it. I think it cos of my posture.
But the first time it happened i was really tight in the chest and it was quite painful until it cracked and there was great relief.
The thing is the pain has gone but i cant stop it cracking and its beginning to sound worse.
Why does no one know what this is! its scary and freaks everyone out when it happens, im only 23 and it scares me!!

I think it is when i got my laptop for uni and would work on my bed. The first time it happened i had pain for a couple of days (tightness) and then finally it cracked and i felt relief.
since then it keeps happening but more regulary specially if im working on the conputer. The pain has gone but the noise is getting worse.
it scares everyone who sits around me and it scares me too.
why does no one know what this is, i hate it

Yes we are all suffering from a minor ailment called costocondritis. nothing to worry about.

I am a very athletic 25 year old and recently my sternum started cracking after I'd twist my torso. I think it's something to do with recently doing more push-ups to develop my chest. Does anybody have an idea of why it started? I don't have any pain and it does it more often everyday.
hey whats up, for about 4 years nowi ave been getting this chest cracking, like when you crack your fingers....my good friend, whos also a male, ahs been getting it just as long if not longer then me. I think it nothign to worry about and i believe this only happens to guy. might have somethign to do with working out or even anxiety, do any of you feel anxiety? not the normal amount of stress but actualy anxiety?
Yes, i totally know what you are going through. I am a 19 year old male and have had deep chest pain in the last 3 months or so. I can pop my chest and it is almost like I have to pop it to feel satisfied. If i stretch my chest forward or back it hurts. Also, deep breaths seem to have slight pain and it is difficult to take full deep breaths at times. Just like you, I have had no injuries to that area and am a non-smoker. This is very strange. I hope it goes away, because it is extremely annoying and painful.
hello all, i'm 19 years old and have the same problem with my chest as most of you. Im very heavy, i say at least each of my breast weight about 15lbs each, and I also suffer from anxiety so when my stress gets bad it causes it to tighten and then I am trying to crack it all day...I have never did any weight lifting, and its not heart because last week I had a ekg done. So maybe its just the weight on my chest and the anxiety?
I also have chest cracking i sit at long periods of time in front of my computer but i dont really attribute it to that. It started after about 3 months of heavy lifting daily, It could be weight gain because i went from 120 -> 160 lbs. (muscle) or it could be just to fast development. Im not really sure but it isnt that big of a deal except for a sharp pain in the middle of my chest whenever i shift my arms to the front.Like many in the above said sometimes if u shift the oposite way u get a couple cracks relieving im not to worried altho i would like to find out the reason why. >:(
Like many others, I am surprised to see that so many have the same problem I do. A couple years ago I started to experience tension in my chest; a habitiual joint cracker, I found that I could releive the tension by arching my back and cracking my sternum. It used to be just one joint on the sternum, but now up to three crack. I kind of doubt this will ever go away - it started when I was in college, walking to school and working construction, abated somewhat when I spent 6 months hiking, and then got worse as I started a desk job. It definitely gets bad if I spend a lot of time hunched over. I wonder if this is genetic or something; my brother, who is 5 years younger than I, has started to experience the same problems, and recently has his first crack. I tried to quit cracking my chest once, but all I ended up with was a tender sternum for about two weeks. I'm at the point now where I crack my sternum about 10 times a day! I would love to hear of a treatment, but haven't come across one yet. I can only wish...
For the last 6 yrs I've been bodybuilding in the gym everyday. Recently I decided to take a 3 weeks off from the gym and noticed that my sternum hurts while I've been sitting for a while. Also I notice that in the last few weeks my posture has been bad and I tend to slouch.
I think that due to my developed pectoral muscles that their weight is causing the pain. Would anyone concur?
On a side note when I went back to the gym and stimulated my pec muscles again the pain in my sternum went away? Weird? Does this makes sense to anyone?
