Ok, an update from me and some decent scientific information for others.
Now 6 days out and have been given drugs by my doctor to manage my anxiety... Working ok so I can think a bit clearer.

Symptoms: poor erection, inability to ejaculate, penis feeling reduced sensation, unpleasant to touch. Pain at base of penis, feeling that the area has been crushed.
Cause confirmed by surgeon, pudendal nerve damage due to high traction force.

Now my research has led me into looking forward into the types of nerve damage, there are 3:

Neuropraxia: nerve axon intact, damage to myelin sheath. Reduced sensation downstream of the injury. Recovery is full taking days to weeks. Caused by oxygen starvation due to the crush. Full recovery unless crush lasts more than 8 hours.

Axonotomesis: axon cut, but tissue around nerve ok. No sensation downstream of the injury. Axon can grow back, may not feel the same. Recovery takes months.

Neurotmesis: this is where it's completely severed, no chance of it getting better without surgery.

So with my preservation of sensation, I think I have neuropraxia and am hoping for a full recovery.

I guess others who have less or no sensation and more serious sexual dysfunction may have some axonotemesis so may have more problems.

Note that neurotmesis is extremely unlikely for these cases, it's the kind of thing u get when e.g. Cut by falling though a window.

From what I read here it seems like neuropraxia is the most common one for people with this issue, rather than the other two.

So yeh, I'm feeling a bit better, but still pretty poor, am thankful to the doctor for the drugs I'm on, hopefully temporarily for the next few weeks while this goes away.

The psychological damage though is severe. The thought of them crushing my sexuality, virility and sense of self worth out of me with that post and the possibility of it being a botched job makes me literally feel like vomiting and triggers a panic attack. It will give me nightmares for years to come irrespective of successful recovery.

No warning before the op is also utterly disgraceful, esp in my case. I was borderline having the op done due to the state my my hip joint, and a risk factor for this injury due to strong hip muscles needing a big force. Had this risk been explained I'd have been out of the door.

So I'm counting myself 'lucky' that it might not be too bad in the end, but the relief if/ when this goes away will be huge.

Needless to say I will be pushing for the highest reprisals from this. i am investigating a case of neglegance against my surgeon, and intend to raise awareness of this problem. Some kind of petition to ensure the nhs ( uk health service) explicitly highlights this risk in traction treatments perhaps, I'm not sure yet.

I will keep this page updated with my progress both medically and with the reprisals.

Gotta give an update, it's good news. Today it has mostly come back over a period of a couple of hours. The first thing I noticed was that my left testicle was feeling normal again. Then the area of pain at the base of my penis which I assume was the bit that was horrifically crushed in traction, started to really hurt and throb. Then the sensation gradually returned. It's not 100% but enough to get a full errection and deliver the goods. Still a bit of pain in the crushed area, I'm assuming that when that goes it will be 100% again.

What an utter relief, 8 days of utter hell brought to a close. I see the surgeon in a week or so, he's in for the tongue lashing of his life.

8 days ? Horrifically crushed ? , mine was quite a normal procedure , not sure if the nerves were horrifically crushed , but it took 4weeks before I got all feeling back . Was worried at the time but was told it can take up to 3 months to come back , so no complaints here . If it wasn't for the operation I'd still be in a lot of pain .

I had a hip arthroscopy for my FAI about 8 months ago. I am 28 years old male. Immediately after my surgery I found I had numbness in my genitals. My consultant said the numbness would go in a few weeks. I was very worried as 3 weeks later it still felt numb. He said it was quite rare but occurred due to pressure on the nerve during the traction. I could still ejaculate and get erect with no problems.
5 weeks later I noticed that the feeling was improving and by 6 weeks it had fully returned. 8 months later my hip has fully healed I'm back to running cycling playing squash.
My advice from my experience is to give it time and don't rush your recovery as it will heal.

I had Femoroacetabular Impingement surgery (FAI Arthroscopic Surgery) 3 weeks ago. I had a few scares after surgery. I had extreme difficulty urinating for the first 3-4 days. The first time I went to pee on the day of the surgery I was standing in the toilet for about 20 minutes and I only got a squirt out. That afternoon it got slightly better. I would take me a long time to urinate but I could at least semi empty my bladder. I would start and stop a lot. On day 3, I was prescribed FLOMAX and that really helped. I was still taking longer than usual to start but I was at least able to empty completely. A week or so later, I was back to normal in that respect.

The other thing I noticed was that I could obtain an erection, but the feeling wasn't all there. It would take me a long time to reach orgasm and when I did I could feel the urge coming and then it would dissipate. I felt some "relief" but it wasn't all that great and very little to nothing ejaculated, I am talking maybe a drop of fluid. I would also take a very long time to reach orgasm. This was very scary. It is only around 20 days after surgery that I started ejaculating as normal and having full feeling back.

I'm 5 weeks out from hip arthroscopy and have zero feeling in my genitals. My surgeon told me that I was his first patient to experience this. He said it may take months or never come back. REALLY. Someone should have warned me.

I've had a hip replacement 2 yrs ago. I had severe pain yesterday and paid a visit to my GP who sent me to hospital to have xrays done.nothing showed up and I was sent home and told to take some anti-infalmatry tablets. I'm still limping today and can only walk with the aid of crutches. What has caused this as I didn't do anything strenuous. Regards Elizabeth

Hi all,
I had knee surgery back in 2010 for a torn ACL, MCL, and partially torn meniscus playing football. At the time, I was 18 years old and very afraid as I lost sensation in my penis as well. Unfortunately the issue is still going on today and I don't know what to do. I'm 23 years old with penis issues yet very physically attractive. Thank you surgery for ruining my life.

Yes!! It is normal.. it may take up to 4-5 weeks for the pundenal nerve to relax. The traction put great stress on the nerve which was irritated and inflamed. So massage and eating healthy and reducing inflammation will help the nerves fire off again. The doctor is my source, it is normal and happens to male and female after hip arthroscopy. I was scared at first being 22 without feeling in my penis, as you can imagine scared the c**p out of me, but I am seeing profess and it has been 2 weeks so far. Massage where the nerve is and also the penis itself . Check out foods such as turmeric and ginger and spinach. Glad I can help you guys out!!

I just had a hip labral tear repair and have had a completely numb penis since. It's 100% numb from the tip of the penis to the middle ( which means it feels like I'm touching someone else) and approximately 80% numb on the remaining half of the penis as well as the scrotum and testicles. It's been over 2.5 days or 60 hours with absolutely no improvement. I cannot achieve erection, any sexual pleasure, orgasm or ejaculation. I'm 30 and am pretty worried about never being able to have sex or kids. I think there's a big difference between numbness and complete numbness because I think there's a much higher likelihood of severe irreversible in the case of complete numbness. If anyone here had a recovery from complete penile numbness I would appreciate hearing your story
