It’s been 12 weeks post op for hip arthroscopy. Feeling in penis came back a bit but it’s like I’m wearing 6 condoms. I can feel pain and cold on the penis but otherwise it’s dumb. Dealing with the reality that this may be permanent has been so hard. It got a little better after surgery but then has plateaued. I’m seeing a neurologist next week.
It’s destroying my marriage and my overall mood. Wish I could go back and not have the surgery. I’ll update if it comes back, but I doubt it.

Hello all,
For reference, I am a 32 yr old male, very athletic & in shape. I chose to undergo surgery to ensure that my joint health will remain superior into my later years in life (to avoid joint replacement at some point). Many years of sports, regular intense weightlifting, bone growth, and some past acute injuries had me feeling some symptoms of pain. The MRI noted tears & that the joint structure was compromised, so I decided to invest in my health now as opposed to later.
I had bilateral hip arthroscopy 16 days ago. I am walking fairly well and never really had pain after surgery. Strengthening the hip and muscles have also been progressing well per my Phys Therapy protocol. We initially thought there was some torn labrum, as well as impingement in both hips. Turns out no torn labrum in either & it was only a “clean-up” job of bone & scar tissue from damage to my hip capsule from an athletic injury at some point.
Unreated to the main point of me posting, I did have a lot of numbness in my thumb/pointer/middle fingers for the first 4 days after surgery. It was frustrating, but has returned back to normal since then.
I’ve had numbness in my penis since the surgery. As many others in this thread have described, it feels like you’re wearing muliple condoms. The first week I couldn’t even get an erection by “helping myself”. I was able to finish a couple times, but the “finished product” definitely was wayyy different than “normal”. The 2nd week I noticed more sensation in my scrotum, and a little more sensation on the backside (part that touches scrotum) of my penis. The base, front, and tip of penis were still very numb. These past few days (remember, I am 16 days out) I have noticed a little more feeling in each of the 3 numb areas I just mentioned. I could also have numbness on the inner groin skin as well, but that could be from freezer burn from the ice packs I’ve been using that is diluting the sensation. Erections have also improved pretty well during the 2nd week (not normal yet, but definitely headed in the right direction), as well as the “finished product” afterwards is also improving well. I am optimistic that feeling will come back to normal in week 4-8 of post surgery. In the meantime I am focusing on my recovery and keeping my mind off of this, as I cannot control it.
I may make an appointment with a neurologist, as well as a chiropractor. I read an article online about a female having numbness for a while, and after 3 chiropractic visits her numbness completely went away. My only hesitation is that I don’t want the chiropractor to do anything to compromise the healing of my hip.
I realize a lot of these posts are from years ago, but I am sure people like myself who experience these surgery side effects come to google and come across this thread looking for answers/empathy. So, I wanted to log a couple posts of my own to help calm everyone’s nerves (no pun intended!), as well as show everyone that I too also went from numbness to eventual full recovery of sensation/performance.
I’ll check back in with any relevant updates these coming weeks. I hope all those who experience this uneasy side effect are met swiftly with healing & normalcy! I personally choose to lean on God, and would encourage anyone in my shoes to do the same.

@Tee123 here again. Likely my 2nd and my final post. No one posted after me, so my 1st post is right before this one. As promised, I am coming back a month later to share an update - good news!
At the 6 week mark, I would say that I am 90% recovered from the numbness I described above. I have no issues with obtaining erections or performance. I am very confident that the remaining 10% will come back over the next 1-6 weeks.
I was certainly stressed out and anxious about the numbness shortly after surgery. I encourage anyone who reads this and is experiencing that same post-surgery numbness to not let panic settle in. My numbness took time to go away, and it didn’t happen suddenly; rather, it happened very gradually. I couldn’t tell a difference from one day to the next, but looking back 2 weeks at a time, huge difference.

I broke my femur and had to have a rod put in. After the surgery my penis, testicals and scrotum were numb. The doctors gave me loads of different reasons at times why.
7 weeks today and feeling is at 95-100percent. I dont notice it anymore and it does everything it needs to do and I can feel it again.
1 week-I could feel pain pinching the skin that was it
2/3 weeks- pain in scrotum area come and go. Feeling I’m testicles started to return
4 weeks- first successful “you know what” attempt (although Bart felt a thing). Feeing In penis starting to return. Pain in scrotum every so often.
5/6 weeks- feeing in the “shaft”of the penis itself returning. No more scrotum pain
7 weeks- it’s more or less how it was before the op. I’d say it’s 100 percent you get so used to it not being 100 percent that you look at the smallest thing.
Mention it to your consultant. If he tells you not to worry then don’t worry. It can take a maximum of 3 months but most are results in 6-8 weeks.
It will get better
