I had arthroscopic hip surgery almost three weeks ago. Since then, the top half of my penis has been numb, and it has been very difficult to have an erection or to ejaculate. My leg was put into traction during the procedure, and I am assuming this is what caused it. My questions are: 1. Is this normal? 2. How long does it usually last? I'm going crazy.

Your not alone with this and I would like to know if you have done anything about this. I asked the nurse about this and she said it was normal and would go away after a few weeks. It has been about 4 months now and it did go away for a while. But I woke up a few days ago and the pain returned. Erections are still possible for me though but the pain is really annoying.

Ditto. Exactly. Please post me on whatever happened. I did my surgery 10-days back and am increasingly anxious! Thanks!

I had hip surgery about three weeks ago and am still numb in both the penis and scrotum. A little bit of feeling has come back in the scrotum but still hardly any feeling in the penis. I did not have arthroscopic surgery but full incision. The doctor told me that the area between my scrotum and anus was damaged from pulling my leg to dislocate my hip - this is the area where the nerves must run to these areas.
He told me last week (after 2 weeks of the numbness) that he felt really good about all of my feeling coming back soon and when it happened it would happen quickly. I'm just not feeling that great about it right now.
I had an erection while sleeping a few nights ago, but I would have never known if my hand hadn't brushed by it because I couldn't feel it - and not really sure if it was a full erection.
If anyone else has been in this position, let me know how it has turned out.
I'm too young for this :-(

Good news from the "girlfriend"
My boyfriend in his late 40's had hip replacement and was very numb after the proceedure. He was positive about it but I was very worried. About one week after surgery he was able to have an erection even with some numbness. He said that touch felt like he still had his jeans on. Three weeks after surgery all sensation returned and he was back to his old self! Be patient, positive, and dont worry....(what a relief)

I have had arthroscopic hip surgery also. I felt strong numbness for couple of days, and the sensation has slowly began to come back. It has been almost 2 weeks now, but it's far from perfect. Hopefully, it's normal and I wish for all of you speedy recovery!

Today marks 60 days from my arthroscopic hip surgery, although recovery is coming along very well but not in all of my body. Two weeks after surgery I noticed that I am not having erections and when I had one does not last long and I don’t feel the ejaculation. I am way too young for this

I had hip arthroscopy two weeks ago. I understand that the post between the legs used to put traction on the hip also puts pressure on the pudendal nerve. Much like a bike set would. I am still experiencing numbness although it seems to have improved. It is still not right and seems to be the front half and the end. I am concerned and remain anxious about this. I have been told that it should resolve but for most of the posts here I see no followup. I found one other blog with one guy who was 2 years out! The post for the femoral fracture is similar and this problem has been reported. I just worry that it is under reported and that there are a bunch of guys out there with permanent damage. Nocturnal erections have returned but not like the ones I would normally follow to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
Can some of you tell me, did this resolve.

Followup. I am now over 6 weeks out from hip arthroscopy. The genital numbness has resolved and everything is back to normal! It was very close to normal but still not 100% at 5 weeks. During the 6th week it seems that the residual numbness slowly faded away. For about one month I had an aching sensation around my left ischial tuberosity. I assume this might be the area that was crushed by the peroneal post. I am so happy to be putting this behind me as it was a very difficult and anxious time. I would reach a plateau point in recovery of sensation and worry that it was not going to resolve beyond that. I hope this helps others who experience this. As part of my PT protocol I coped with the stationary bike portion by standing on a block of wood with my left leg and clipping my right (operative) foot into the left pedal of my stationary bike so that I would not spend any time on my perineum. I now have something called a BiSaddle mounted to the trainer that I purchased online. A very adjustable bike saddle so you can have a custom fit. It was utilized in a very unique study on NYC bike cops. Good luck all !

Hello everybody, I know this is a very stressing topic and is all consuming right now for me as well. I had arthoscopic hip surgery on 5/27/11. For the first few doays I could not feel my penis or my balls. I was really worried at first but was told by my doctor that it would feel better in 2 to 3 weeks. I am now a little over 2 weeks out and there is still a lot of numbness going on. I can get hard and can cum, but there isn't a lot of feeling in there. My wife and I had sex and to be honest I didn't even know if my penis was inside her. It seems like I am getting some feeling back but no where close to where it was. I hope some other people can shed some light on how long it took to get the feelig back. I am 32 and do not want to have to deal with this for the rest of my life. Good luck to everyone and please post message of what has happened so we all can maybe feel a little better

I am just checking in to see if anyone responded. It appears most people don't follow up. I am hoping this means everyone has gotten better. I am at the 4 week mark. The penis numbness is going away but it is defintly not back to 100%. I am seeing improvment pretty much everyday but hopefully soon it will be better. I will check in next week

hi all,
had arthroscopic hip surgery 4 days ago. My penis and my left ball are really numb. No chance to get an erection and no improvement by now.
As jwil already mentioned, there are no follow ups. i try to stay calm, apparently I cannot do anything than wait. But this whole thing makes me crazy. Are there more people with hopefully positive news?
