I had bunion surgery almost 4 months ago and they pain I feel now is 10 times worse than before the surgery. I have been going to PT with no improvement. My toe is fine, bends up and down. My problem is around the ball of my foot, it feels swollen like I am walking on a rock and the pain continues down the side. Even just sitting with my tennis shoes on the pressure of it is terrible. At night it just throbs.

Has anyone had this sort of pain? I am calling my doctor tomorrow and demanding that he does more than just send my to physical therapy. Any suggestion on future action that I can take. My kids get out of school in a couple of weeks and the thought of spending the summer in this kind of pain is so depressing to me. I am just so fearful that I will end having to suffer with this.

Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I am in week 10, and was told that I would be off my feet for twelve weeks, although I have been getting around in comfy shoes for the last three weeks I am still a long way from normal, my foot is still swelling every day and is very stiff am unable to bend my toe, can't imagine being able to walk without a limp ever gain, Its crazy to think that I can swim faster than I can walk. I would like to hear from someone that they have had this op and obtained a fantasic recovery, cause so far all I have found here is worrying, I had a chevon op and read on another link that it is not a very good option like many of you I decided to have the op as I suffering pain and was of the mind that this would improve matters, and feel that the health professionals have not been entirly frank with us on how long the recovery takes

Hi I had my bunion removed March 30th 2007. My big toe is stiff too. I like to do yoga and I'm worried about the bending of my toe too. Everyday I am doing exercises to make it bend. Someone told me that I have to be persistant otherwise it will never bend. The most important thing is to lift up your heel as you walk. That is what someone told me.
Good luck to us all.

I am at the ten week period of my op called a chevon with a screw in the large joint below my big toe, the shape of my foot is much improved and the wound has healed without any problems, but much like the rest of you I have been shocked at the scale of recovery, I am still unable to wear normal shoes, and am still limping can not bend my toe swelling still takes place on a daily bases, I certainly had the impression that by now all would be well. I can only hope that the health care professionals have been lax in informing us that this all takes longer to get better than they lead us to belive

Now at week 12 and have had noteable improvment, the level of swelling has reduced considerable not sure if this is down to the passage of time or the Glucosamex Gold supplement, but whatever Iam greatly relived still cannot bend my toe but can acheive some movment, I am aware of discomfort on the ball of my foot that i had not noticed before, but maybe that is just cause I am gettting about a bit more, had my first full day back at work, really tried the short walk from my car to the shop was exhausting not helped by the fact that I have put my hip out, and of course it is my left foot but my right hip!! so you can imagine the sight trying to limp with both side's damaged haha. still thinking posivtive best luck to you all will keep you updated if youcan bear it.

Nice to find a site to exchange thoughts. Not sure how anyone feels about this, however, I have been having reiki on my foot and it appears to be really helping with the pain. I was on Vicodin for 3 days and it really altered the behavoir, Not for the best. I am now on Darviset and I take it at night, it appears to hurt the worst. I am 2 weeks into the surgery, I feel pain mostly around the screws and walking in a air cast with my crutches.. Also, I have been told to put my foot in Two buckets (pans that fit my size foot), and soak in Hot water (110 degrees or as hot as you can handle it), and cold, alternating after 60 seconds, this appears to helping for the swelling. Reading about the stories in regards to the screws has me with some concern. I didnt know that they are supposed to come out. Any thoughts?

Hello folks. I am 8 wks post L foot bunionectomy and was also told that I would be 'back to normal' within 7-8 wks. I am wearing larger size tennis shoes due to continued swelling. My discomfort seems to ebb and flow' thankfully not always a consistent pain. My real discomfort which started aprx 3 wks ago is actually more up the exterior/side portion of my ankle to the entire surface of my knee. This is more what is causing me to limp even more so than the under/top surface of my foot.

I am also interested in hearing from anyone who is 3-6 mos post op and seeing how they feel.

Hi all. I had a bunionectomy of the right foot, both sides and one pin in the second toe. I was miserable for about 6 weeks. But today a 1 1/2 years later my right foot is pain free. I am so happy with this and it looks good to. So thats a plus. I went back 7 months later and my screws out. My doctor had me in a removable cast versus a regular cast, but hes an awesome foot doctor to begin with. I have limited mobility of bending my big toe to curl under but to bend it up it i have incredible mobility. I just went in the 15th of June to have my left foot done. I only had to have one removed from the big toe and three pins put in. This one is awful the pins itch, the stitches itch and it hurts but hey in all do time it will heal and be just as good as the right foot. Good luck all of ya.

recovery is still on steady progress, still cannot independantly bend my big toe, there is still slight swelling, but I am able to get about now have been improveing my fittness, where as a few weeks ago to walk a couple hundred yards was akin to running a marathon I am able to walk my dog again without her having to stop and take a nap while i catch up. Ihave also got back to my regular 40 lengths of the local swimming pool, this has been the best exercise as I have never been any good at running it has also helped my hip trouble as well.
I go back to the clinic on the 5th july for the follow up on my op so will let you know how that go's. Don't know if its my bad luck or not being in Scotland but I have not been offered any physio like most of you guys seem to get as a matter of course.

Went back for lastest appointment, it was real busy as there was only one doc available for 19 patients my appointed time 3.10 was sent for xrays was finally seen at 4.15, doc seemed a little concerned about the screw in the xray even I could see that it appeared close to the surface, but I am not feeling any undue discomfort in that area. I have pain in the instep of my foot and across the top of my foot below the rest of my toes and there is clear bruises appearing, I am also still inclined to walk on the side of my foot holding my big toe up. He is going to send me to get an insole made to wear inside my shoes to help alleavate the problem, hope this works, Moblity is still improving slowly, has anyone had these insoles and do they help?

Hi, I had mild surgery on both bunions where the bone was cut the first one on 8/29/07 and the second 9/5/07 and I also had straightening of my toes and hammertoe corrections on the remaining eight toes..."I am Insane"....it has been 5 weeks from the first foot and I too am experiencing pain as if I am walking on a swollen rock (something just doesnt feel right) To my amaze I am actually able to put pressure on the second foot. I have been going to PT for a week now and I have 10% movement in my toes; I was told that it may be the scar tissues and with deep massage I will regain movement and flexation. I had to cancel planned engagements; I am still walking in the post op "ski boots" I am upset becuase I forsee that my healing time is not 4 to 8 weeks as I was told by my doctor.

I can definitely sympathize with anyone out there who had a bunionectomy and is having pain. I had my right foot done 6/1/07, had a bone graft, fusion and screw placed and just had the same thing on my left foot 9/14/07. After my first operation, I experienced pain underneath my big toe that I still have and was told by the doctor it was sesamoiditis. He told me it could last 6 months to a year. I have a pad I wear in my shoe that helps take some pressure off the big toe, which helps minimally. As for the second foot I just had done, I am having sharp pain across my big toe and a sharp pain with burning where the bunion was. I am going to physical therapy 2-3 times a week, with really no relief. I supposedly have good range of motion with my toe but the pain is unbearable at times with or without movement. The doctor gave me muscle relaxers thinking it is spasms but they really aren't helping. I will admit I am having a hard time putting weight on my big toe and am walking on the side of my foot which I know isn't good but what do you do when the pain is so bad??? I feel like a made a big mistake having them done. I just want to walk without pain again and at this point I really feel like I won't. Anyone else experience similar symptoms of the sharp pain in the toe continuously that it turned out ok?? Any feedback would be great!! Thanks!

It has been almost two weeks since my double bunionectomy (right foot). I guess they broke the bone on both sides to be able to reposition, then shaved, put pins on both sides, then used dissolvable stitches! I am feeling really good already, actually. I had a lot of swelling the first week, and at my one week post-op appointment, the mighty unveiling occurred and the tight, uncomfortable, bulky dressings came off for good. I was then upgraded from my "ski boot" to a surgical shoe. I have been in the shoe almost a week and getting around just fine. However, I was not "prescribed" physical therapy or anything and am wondering if this is unusual?! I also ran into another woman at work today who had the same procedure done a week before me and is still in the boot, still unable to get it wet, in physical therapy, etc. Is my doctor just progressive?! Any ideas? Also, anyone know when it's okay to swim? My doctor said to wait about a month for the stationary bike and at least six weeks for true impact sports (I am a runner), but feel I haven't really been informed of when to do what! Suggestions?

 Well I had both feet done before surgery I was in so much pain! I am a waitress and in tears every single day. I am pretty tall model looking and love to dress up and own beautfull clothes and shoes that I cant wear. I waitress and have one pair of nurse shoes 11 years old that I can walk in. None of 50 pairs of sneakers can be worn. The doctor looks at me like Im crazy when I tell him I am totally cripled with pain. It is true my bunion friends It is a hitchcock movie, A cruse from the devil and I visit my closet with all my dreams inside. Now I dont care about the scar. The dr makes me laugh when he comments about the first foot that needs the implant removed. Oh too bad the scar was just healing. Hello I cant walk!!!!The implant foot is a size 9 now the keller procedure foot is still a size 10. That dosent bother me at all.The PAIN is crazy and my boyfriend thinks Im a baby or maybe even a liar about this. HA HA I WISH !!!! :

Well, thank goodness! I thought I was losing my mind! I had my bunion surgery Feb 1, 08. I am now exactly 7 weeks out. The surgery went well, bone healed by three weeks, minimal pain except for the pins that were used to stabalize the toe. Pins came out one at 2 weeks one at three weeks. Minimal swelling. BUT. ...BUT, I have SEVERE pain with the scar. I have adhesions and scar tissue. I have complained about this pain to my doctor who says, "Oh, but it has only been 4 weeks.", "Oh, but it has only been 5 weeks.", "oh but it has only been 6 weeks." I cannot wear shoes as the worst part of the scar, the part causing the pain, sits right over the joint. Any movement of the toe just irritates it. Shoes flex right at that point, and they dig into the scar. What a stupid place to put an incision. Does ANYONE have any thoughts as to how to deal with the scar??? I have a friend who had both feet done at the same time...same surgery as mine. 5 weeks out she was in shoes and walking. Another person I know had both feet done, 6 weeks out shoes on playing tennis. I don't understand. I am active and am getting more and more depressed just sitting and waiting. I can't bend my toe in either direction and I can't wear shoes. I keep thinking this was the biggest mistake of my life. My other foot hurts too, but now I am afraid to do anything to help it.

I had a bunionectomy Feb 29th, 08. I was on crutches for 3 days, i wore that stupid boot for 1 weeks and i couldn't take it anymore. I went and bought some new shoes and had my left one stretched sl that my fat foot could fit. I don't have too much pain at all. actually minimal pain. The incision however, is numb and i have this annoying feeling on and around it. I guess i am just suppose to message it, but i can't get rid of that tingling numbing feeling. I tried going for walks last week and too. again, it was fine till i got home....Then, i bought a motorcycle a few weeks ago and i just got on it for the first time yesterday and rode for about an hour and my foot was so swollen last night and into today. Of'course i got back on the bike today and rode for about 30 minutes. Before it started to have some pain. I guess i am going to have to start icing it again. I really feel like it was a mistake to have this done. i can't wait for my big toe to actually touch the ground when i walk. but, i was walking on it within a week of the surgery. I don't feel like i had much choice beings i do have 3 children at home and it's only me to make sure things are in tact around here. I went to the doctor and he said it was heeling well, He said that it as if i had surgery 5 months ago and that i had a small hair line fracture but, nothing to be concerned about. He then tells me that it can be swollen for up to six months and that i may never get my feeling back again. I wish i was told this before the surgery. I really think that this was a mistake. I would have to say that i have heard nothing but bad about this type of surgery and i really regret it. Then on top of it. i was told this would cost me around 3800 bucks and now i am looking at like 6800. without insurance this will kill me. It's amazing what they don't tell you. I swear they do the surgery just for job security.
