Wow, glad to finally discover this thread! Add me to the list of sufferers of this weird syndrome, which my dentist and doctor also pooh-poohed.

I get the sensation for a few intense minutes after drinking beer or wine, with a meal (that's usually how I consume alcohol), and it feels like the beer bubbles painfully percolating through the hinges in my jaw. I've only had this in the last 6 years or so, I'm 45 this year. I note that I wear a night guard to protect my teeth from grinding when I sleep, so I always suspected this pain was related to alcohol somehow relaxing jaw muscles stressed from night grinding. But I have no way to prove this and my dentist doesn't buy into that either.

I can't say I found any correlation to the type of food being eaten, but I will definitely try the water thing from now on. The idea of it being Hodgkins-related is spooky, but for now I will ignore that.

i thought i'd search for this as my first glass of wine caused me huge amounts of cramplike pain either side of my jaw. i get this quite often, but now as i continue drinking the feeling has gone.

strangely enough a first bite on a slice of cheese has the same affect!

My jaw also cramps/hurts occassionally when I drink wine. I have found that it happens when I drink less water than a typical day, so I think it may have something to do with your level of hydration. Has anyone else experienced similar pain when dehydrated?

Ok I thought it was only me. Seems I only get when I drink certain kinds of alcohol (white wine & vodka), But it's like a shooting pain in my cheek muscles.

At least now I know i'm not alone

I think you're on to it.. I've suspected tannins or non-ethanol alcohols, since I've only noticed this effect with certain drinks; beer and wine mostly, and maybe some of the less pure distilled liquors.

I have a similar problem when I drink alcohol. Shortly after I start drinking, I get an intense pain on both sides of my jaw in front of and just below my ears. It's sharp, but at the same time has a pins and needles component. It lasts maybe 15-20 minutes and then goes away. I've noticed that if I drink quickly, I won't get the sensation at first, but when I start coming down off the alcoholic buzz I will feel it. I haven't noticed a correlation with the type of alcohol, although it does seem to be much worse when I am dehydrated. I have acid reflux and TMJ, so there's a possibility it might be related to one of those. I also know that Hodgkin's Lymphoma can cause pain over affected lymph nodes with alcohol consumption, which frightens me.

I experience the same problem and have to say that NO ONE believes me when I explain how painful it is. I had a (very rare due to the pain) glass of white wine on Friday night and ended up in tears because of the pain.

It does make me feel better to know that I am not alone! LOL

I have pains and cramps in my face and extremities, upper arms and thighs. A friend suggested I was allergic or unable to metabolize alcohol anylonger. I read that those with Asian or native Americans have a higher incidence of this condition. I am half Asian and had my gall bladder removed. Shortly after this , I could no longer drink alcohol without this pain. I have found on certain occassions that I can drink wheat beers like heifewiezens without incidence, but wines and hoppy beer cause me instant trouble.

Got the same thing....cant find any info? Is there a doctor in the house/?

Hi, I get the same thing. After a bit of beer, pushing my tongue left and right will cause sharp stabbing pains in back of my jaw bone.

I wonder if its related to having wisdom teeth out. I've had this since university, which is when it 1st happened.. I've had both my bottom wisdom teeth removed tho.
