I was with a trainer at the YMCA last week and during that time (with no apparent injury), I began having pain in a small spot on my right shin bone.
The pain and then swelling grew and by the time I got to Urgent Care about 4 or 5 hours later, I couldn't walk. I spent the night in Urgent Care and the two docs there couldn't say definitively what the swelling a pain was caused by. A d-dimer test came back negative so I couldn't have the ultrasound that was recommended. They didn't take an x-ray. I left on 2 abx and was told to come back if there was no improvement in 24 hours.
I went back the next night with bruising and swelling and saw another doctor who felt it was a soft tissue injury, but thought I should have an ultrasound.
I have waiting all week to go to a dispensary where they have an ultrasound machine. Even after a week I can't stand or walk for very long. (And no driving for me!)
I was getting worried about what this might be so I just did some research and I'm thinking maybe a shin splint?
If it is, is there supposed to be a lot of swelling? The brusing has no gone down to foot (turning most of it a grey/blue color. And there's still a big bulge on the shin.
I don't remember feeling a crack or pull when I was working out.
Can shin splints do all that? How are diagnosed and treated?
Thanks!
