I just wanted to offer a possibility that I don't known if everyone has had checked. I had googled the pain as I am just a week out in recovering from my hip replacement. I am fairly confident this sharp pain that has popped up is the piriformis muscle cramping. I'm hoping mine will just go away as I recover and everything adjusts (I am on anti-inflammatory NSAIDs which I read help), but I do read there is a Piriformis Syndrom with which the pain and issue is continuous and it says other things that may help, like injections.

I am a healthy 52 year old male, I too prednisone for contact allrergies. It is causes the hip joints to be eat up around them. This is so common it is scary, nobody is telling people this and still prescribing. My brother had the same problem and had to have THR at age 52 also. My total hip replacement was done and it immediately cured me to my amazement, the problem came on very quick in one week my knee knee started giving away, then it got hard to walk without it collapsing. Finally after many Doctors kept telling me it was my back, I had a nerve conductivity test which was positive for the Hip. I saw the Surgeon on a Friday and had Surgery on Monday, I was walking steps that afternoon feeling great. I had one bad day, and all others were virtually painfree after surgery. I was really feeling to good about this and was told to never run. But, about 8 weeks out I was outside with my wife and ten year old and we decided to play hide and see just some family time, I was never intending on getting in any hurry. But I did a very stupid thing spur of the moment I hobbled as fast as I could trying to beat my wife to the base only about 20 yards or less,. I immediately felt the stitches tear on the interior, they tore more and more over a few days. Since this time the hip has gotten worse and worse. Keep in mind I also have a herniated disc which has been there and I do now that pain, except it has never much went all the way down my leg. Now my symptoms are a very very tender area around the anterior incision area, going way lower toward my knee which feels like the left side of my femur bone is bruised, I also have a good bit of very uncomfortable pain down the top of my femur when doing anything above a slow walk, my hip joint area is sore and my left testicle feels bruised, now I am having a pressure feeling in my left abdomen when bending forward, also all during this time I have had a serious burning sensation in my entire leg from hip down to my toes, mainly to the knee. I have had five blocs in my back with little help. My hip surgeon gave me a cortisone shot I think into the incision area that did nothing to reduce the pain. I am stuck between a back surgeon and a hip surgeon with nobody wanting to do anything - I really believe I loosened the prosthesis when I ran that day and it seems to be moving around causing pain in different places at different times. Laying down on my side even on my good hip causes severe pain, any weight bearing at all kills my leg. I am not one to complain about pain, but I am 52 and need to do things like work. Can anyone give me any advice, has anyone heard of anyone with a loose prosthesis after running to soon or a fall that still showed perfect on a x-ray, I believe it goes back into place when I lay down to have the x-ray taken. I have the best surgeon in the world in my opinion and he has told me it is probably ruined, but he can fix, but wants to wait 12 months, he seems to not be telling me something or they see so many people complain they just want to wait until you tell them it is unbearable, which I may never say! Help anyone!

hi Ann, I wonder how are you doing. I found this post as i'm currently experience similar pain 18 month after my THR operation. All was excellent until 2-3 days ago when i started feeling an electric kind of pain irradiating from my buttock/mid-back-thigh and a bit into my knee whenever i walk more than 10 meters. Then if I stop standing and start walking again I get no pain for another 10 meters and then there comes the pain again.
It's driving me crazy thinking somehow I got it broken. I have a 12 month daughter that just starts to walk, and it makes me sad just to think that I won't be able to properly walk with her :(
I have an appointment with the hip surgery on Monday, so I'm hoping it gets better till then.

My hrp is 13 yrs old now, and up until 3wks ago it was fine, but since then I've found it difficult to walk and I'm now using a walking stick

Also I have pain in my buttocks and can't stand or sit for any length of time, I don't know what's happened; and my doctor has referred me to the hospital but could be 6 to 12 weeks until I'm seen, so I'm very worried I'm doing more damage, any answers anyone?

Tanya, I am experiencing the exact same pain! I had a left hip replacement in 2001 due to chronic pain from a congenital hip dysphasia! (Had 7 surgeries as a child) I did fabulously even though my greater trocánter was broken during the surgery. I did need revision in 2011 and had a few good years with minimal pain. Over the last two years I have been in miserable pain. I work as a clinical nurse educator working full time and I am at my wits end!!! Did you ever find relieve for
Your pain?

Get an ultrasound of piriformis. I did after 6 months and 4 doctors and a hip replacement and it showed a 1 inch tear in it.

I had a total hip replacement 1 year ago, had a great recovery, then 2 months ago started getting the same pain.
Going to my chiropractor helps, but then it comes back a week later.
