I'm sure that there are certain skin types that react poorly to venlafaxine. I was put on it off the back of a severe depressive episode and it gave me the energy to kick on. Unfortunately cystic acne, for me, at the sides of my nose, eventually down to the skinfold between my cheek and upper lip, became a far too regular occurrence. I eventually had to stop it as it transpired i was bipolar and my skin began to improve, only to deteriorate again when i began to take atomoetine(a close cousin of venlafaxine, also from the noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor family) to aid with concentration whilst studying. Since then I've got a bit fed up ; my theory is that noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors increase oil production in sebum glands causing this cystic acne phenomenon in a subset of patients. I think this should be researched further as it is used as a treatment for depression in a large number of cases. One thing you don't need a degree to understand is the positive correlation between looking healthy and feeling healthy. Even if there was a drug that gave me the high of MDMA and the sexual prowess of viagra all in one with no comedown; i still wouldn't touch it if it worsened my acne. I grew up in a world of advertising, there is no amount of psychological therapy or counselling that would help me to coexist with bad acne. I've actually just gone on to isotretinoin to deal with the skin changes I've incurred taking these pathetically poor brands of medication. Each to their own though x

Started on Effexor 37.5 mg a little lessthan a year sgo, seemed to help my anxiety, although it did make me very sleepy. Sleepiness got better,I asked my dr to increase the dosage to 75 mg about 4 months ago. Immediately started with the cystic acne on my back, chest, and scalp, and onlyjusta couple small ones around my jaw. Asked dr about it and she said it wasn't the medication. Have tried o do elimination diet. No change. Dermatologist- topical medications that don't work. Store bought meds- no change. Seemslikeit mightgoaway, then within 24 hrs crops back upand/or a new one pops up. Very painful. I has someacne whenI was 13 but nothing like this. I'm 58. I'm going off of it, and that's a shame because I think it helps. Tried Cymbalta, and Lyrica (which caised weight gain big time), along with other meds over the yrs (also have fibromyalgia) and they didn't help.

Also, Cymbalta made my anxiety worse.

Effexor is definitely related to my acne. I am 50, have not had acne since my teens. When I take Effexor I break out within 3 days. When I stop taking it my acne goes away. For me it appears on my chin, sides of nose and forehead. It looks like the measles.
