I suffer from throbbing throat from 1 year now and I was very bad, I still have it, but now I know what it is. I had other symptoms like chest pain, throbbing pulse in my head, throat, chest, body, tightness in my throat and burning sensation inside and outside, inside like I`ve been burnt from a hot beverage and outside (the skin) like I was burnt from the sun, muscle spasm in my jaws and temples, a general malaise and faint sensation, pressure around head, pressure in my ears, pain in my tongue, spasms in the back of my head and in other parts of the body, extreme diziness. I barely stood up and I was about to quit my job. I have visited many doctors in one year (GPs, three ENT doctors, three neurologists, one reumathologist, three cardiologists, one endocrinolog, one neurosurgeon, had may blood tests, endoscopies, RMI, CT, etc.). Nobody found nothing and I spent a lot of money whitout any result. I was desperate, I googled days on end to see what is happening to me, and found GERD, cricopharingeal spasm, thyroiditis, even I thought I had ALS or MS because of the tongue spasms, too many illnesses to cope. I took pills for GERD many months but one day I stopped because I felt I hadn`t that, no results after Nexium. I forgot to tell that I was very scared, I felt that may body was transforming in something I could`t recognize because of so many symptoms. Huge anxiety...I did not sleep for about three months, I felt like a zombi, no pill for sleeping worked. After a dizastrous hospitalization, where the diagnostic was just "anxiety", I said I would stop with the doctors, and strongly believed that someday I would find what it is with me. Now I know I HAVE TMJD (temporomandibular joint disease), because symptoms are primarily muscular on my face and throat. Google helped a lot. I was right, my reumatologist confirmed that after I said I strongly believe that I have TMJD. He sent me to make an ecography of the tmj and I have inflammation and calcification in both tmj. Big relief, but pitty the treatment is not efficient for me. I have to live with it.
Do not desperate, you will find the cause of your pain, and after all this story for me that affected my life whitout returning, I have found that the optimism is the best medicine in the world :-D

Strange... this throbbing in my left neck area started this morning. It actually woke me up and I thought I had just slept wrong. But it's a strange throbbing and it feels like its in my artery. ?? It's been constant for several hours now. I almost pscyched myself into thinking I may be having a heart attack! ?? I took an aspirin and I'm kind of just playing the waiting game, hoping this will go away. It's scary because I cannot pinpoint where it is coming from and it almost feels like it's going behind my left shoulder area and a lilttle down my left arm. Just a dull throbbing, no sharp pain or anything... Grrrr! TITAN0419

Hi all,

I've had the same symptoms as you - Pain and feeling tightness around neck when lying down. It can ache from time to time if I do something strenuous as well but it's most noticeable when I am laying down.

My doctor said it's most likely GERD, acid reflux which can cause an inflammation around the muscles and create some throat and ear ache too. A little over a month ago I had a burning feeling at the back of my throat as well, no taste however of any acid but you don't always feel or taste it. It never developed into a cold or anything else and that was how it all started. The acid must have run down my throat while I was lying down and caused some inflammation over time. Acidic and fat food can cause it.

I know most of you posted your queries a long time ago so would be interested in hearing how it all went and if you've found out what it was?

Please look up GERD and see if it may be that?

Thanks.

Also, what is noticable is that I don't feel hunger as much as I used to which is one of the symptoms as well. I have to remind myself to eat a lot of the times.

I've been complaining of the same symptoms for 8 years and they are gradually getting worse. I decided to make a list and see if anyone shares these symptoms or has any input.

- First and foremost, a constant, painful, swelling/achy feeling in my neck. Intense feeling of hanging upside down even when I'm right side up. I often find myself checking the mirror to see if the veins in my neck are popping out, and sometimes they are. This feeling started after I had my thyroid removed when I was 15 years old. Originally it was only once in a while when I was laying down and has progressed to being always present, and unbearable by the evening.

- This feeling is accompanied always by a headache. Again the same headache you would have if you were always hanging upside down. I wake up with it every day and it also is unbearable by the evening.

- I am always tired and physical exertion of any kind leaves me completely exhausted and makes my head and neck absolutely throb in pain. By the end of every day something as simple as walking across the room can be a feat and I need to sit and take a breather.

- Lately I have been nauseated by the feeling. Usually only by the evening but sometimes I wake up already nauseous.

- Mild to severe back and shoulder pain depending on the day.

- After all these years this has taken a mental toll on me as well. I'm often confused, groggy, extremely forgetful, and very depressed.

- Despite being exhausted I am completely incapable of getting to sleep at night.

- Occasionally (2 - 3 times per month) this all accelerates into a full blown migraine episode where I am throwing up and can't do anything but lay in the dark with no noise.

-There are other things that do not bother me at all, but I could mention in case they are somehow a key.. sporadic flushing/burning cheeks, cold fingers and toes, sporadic pain in lymph node areas (around armpits), random extreme breakouts on my face, chest, and back.

There are no over the counter drugs that have even touched this, and most just make it worse. I was prescribed a couple different kinds of narcotics at different points and all they seemed to do was make the feeling worse and make me temporarily not care about it. Even they are not an option anymore because I've tried them too many times and now they immediately make me sick.

Any response is welcome. I am having a hard time living with this and any clues or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :-)

I have been having this problem only with the right side. From right under my jaw line. It's a pulsating pain that usually only lasts a couple of hours and then goes away. Can stay away for as long as a couple months. No warning when it comes back. I have no other problems such as a cough or anything. I have been having migraines for the last 2 years. Havent seen a doctor about any of this. Missed my last period and took two home pregnancy tests and both negative. I've been pretty good size as far as weight my whole life and within the last 5 years or so I have gained a considerable amount of weight. I just found out that all these are symptoms of a thyroid problem. Scared to go to the doctor.

I had the same symptoms and finally after seeing every doctor imaginable I was refered to a movement disorder specialist. It was a last resort and guess what, it paid off. I was finally diagnosed with a rare disorder call Palatal Tremor. Please see a movement disorder specialist. They study cases such as Parkinsons. I am so glad that I didn't give up and finally got the answer I needed. Good Luck

I too am feeling the same as all of you. It kinda worries me to know the doctors think it's nothing, from what some of you have said. I have yet to go to the doctor for this problem and it seems pointless with what I've read. When someone finds out what it is and how bad it is please let all of us know!!

It's interesting to hear that others are having similar symptoms to me. However, my sympoms are slightly different and my first experience was about 2 mths ago.

It starts as a pulsating in my lower throat - seems to be in that hollow little space where the collarbones meet, at the base of the throat...the pulsating becomes a painful throb and all the neck muscles start aching..it moves up into my mouth and all my back teeth ache and then my head starts throbbing. My first experience was a couple of months ago, while I was vacuuming stairs, so thought it might have been physical exertion..but it really alarmed me because it was so unusal...even though that first time, there were no headaches or teeth aching....and the sensation past as soon as I sat down. Then it started happening when I went for a walk...nothing too physical....and once again, as soon as I could sit down and relax the sensation past. More recently, when it happens it lasts longer....and hits me when I'm even just sitting down relaxing. It starts as a throb in my lower neck then moves up into my head. My ears never ache from it and it doesnt effect my eyes or nose or anything below my lower neck. The last time it happened, a couple of nights ago. I was sitting reading and it was so severe, I thought I would die. I tried putting my head down between my legs and that was worse. I tried lying down on the bed...no good. I got up and walked around, trying to take in deep breaths and after about 5 minutes of severe throbbing pain it started to subside, first in my teeth then my throat and left me with achy neck muscles and a mild headache at my temples. I took an aspirin and went to bed...and slept pretty well as I am unaccustomed to taking painkillers.
The following info might be relevent or irrevelant:
I have controlled hypertension ( I take medicine for it) but I don't think it has anything to do with blood pressure.
I have been suffering from heart burn for about a year...it seems to be worse when I'm stressed.
I gave up smoking about 6 months ago because I thought it might help my hearatburn, but it didnt.
My family accuse me of being a worryer...and they are probably right...but I dont have panic attacks and I have no problem relaxing.

If anyone can recognise my symptoms and advise me, I will be very grateful.
Michelle

It could be GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease). I have a chronic problem with my throat & inflammation and it is due to the GERD that was untreated for so long. With the heartburn, are they worse at night (lying down) and do they feel like heart attracjs but are not? You mentioned Hypertension, that & heartburn could be a cardiac disorder such as heart disease as well or could lead to it.

It may well be blood pressure--this has happened to me.Sometimes the shooting knife-like pains going up an often distended artery on the side of my neck and calwing in the back of my jaw is...visible. I too get up and walk around, the paing will not let you lie there.Immediately take an aspirin every time, it can't hurt.No answers from me either. What if this is an early stroke indicator or chol. related, I'm guessing too.

First off it seems like the problems everyone is mentioning are the same but there is nobody posting answers to any of your questions. I have the same issues as all of you are posting but the biggest thing you ALL need to do is relax. I know it sounds arrogent of me to say so but it's true. There is a story I want you all to hear to shed light on my previous statements:

About 12 years a test was conducted between 100 patients suffering from a variety of symptoms such as ours along with flu like symptons, headaches, nausea etc. The doctors came to each patient and handed them a sugar pill. Nothing medical about it, just a plain sugar pill and a glass of water BUT, each doctor said it was medicine to cure the exact problem they were dealing with.

A few days later almost 75% of patients say they felt better and had requested more of the "meds" they were given. When they were told what the medication actually was all the patients were shocked and realized one important thing.....a lot of their symptoms had been worsened or even caused by their stress and their focus on it. I'm not stating the isuues you and I are having aren't real but just try not to focus on it....it will only make it worse. It is true by the way, if you wish yourself to get sick you can actually make yourself sick. Your mind is a powerful tool but it's up you if you want to use it as an advantage or a crutch. You will not die. You will not drop dead. Just breath and stop reading about it if you are all so worried!!! It only makes it worse because you and your mind just dwell on it. See a doctor! Whats the worst that will happen? You'll only get better! Just dont dwell on it guys trust me!

Now, for a long time I have had bad heartburn and acid-reflux and have just been perscribed a medication for this that really hasnt been working. My throat will get almost "hard" and will spasm quite often but I've noticed the more I think about, the worse it gets. Another thing you should ask your doctor is about a fungus called Candida. I know it sounds gross but its a yeast fungus (yes like a yeast infection) that can grow anywhere at anytime and causes your body to kinda freak out but it's curable. Oh and it can go into your throat but is overlooked as something else quite often so mention it next time you go. Also something that really helps is gargling with salt and water and this method has been around for ages and works. Another thing that works for me hoarking up a big spit. Soungs gross but it might be something as simple as a little hair or something. Drink warm lemon tea for that will relax your throat too and keep in mind allergies can form at anytime even if you've never had them before.  But I know I'm going to be ok as will of you. Stay and think positive guys!!! Cheers

My doctor thinks the same of mine - I had no reason to believe it was true but the healing gastro/asphogus meds and anitspasms meds he put me on work. However I am not convinced 100% yet that it will cure it. I recently had a reoccuring heart surgery that I have every few years and unlike normal this intense sharp shooting pain started after that surgery. Ironic to me... Hope this helps!
