I got that damn Australian flu in 2003 and i'm still suffering with the lump in throat, reduced hearing, pains in chest from gas. I sometimes got a whirring noise in my ear, like a dopper noise from listening to a unborn babies heartbeat, however coughing (even a forced cough) solves that. It's worst if I forget to brush my teeth (which I try no to do anyway).

I to have had CT scans and was told by ENT that I can't have it and to stop wasting their time (nice)

But I have found things that help, I do not buy this anxiety balls, so I did a few experiments to see what helped. In the end I found that it isn't in my head but is infact mucus, lots of it. When I brush my teeth I get the brush right in the back of my throat brushing the canals from my ears, ok it makes me heave, BUT I throw up a vast amount of mucus and for a few lovely hours, the throat feeling is gone :) my ears pop and I can swollow. I am waiting to go back to ENT to get them to explain if it was in my head, why is this working and where is the shed load of mucus coming from?

I do worry as my chest sounds fluidy some mornings and I have to cough to clear it. I have never smoked and am 27 years old. I do wonder if it's an allergy and did feel better after cutting out dairy (but I have researched this and it can cause extra production of mucus???)

good luck to you all, this really is bloody awful

I have a lump under my chin, it doesn't hurt unless I keep bothering it...I just recently noticed it...I've been having migraines for a while now and feeling fatigued and nauseated...I'm kind of scared it might be cancer. It's right under my chin at the top of my throat...I really need some answers...doctors haven't told me I have cancer, but doctors are not right all the time, and I really hope that if it is cancer, it is caught in time...but as of right not praise God its not.

I have had exactly the same thing for many many months.  I did NOT have the flu and I am extremely healthy.  I know exactly when it happened.  It happened the next morning after I ate an entire tablespoon of cider vinegar.  I had this huge lump (I thought it was a growth) that showed up overnight!  I went to the emergency room - had all the tests.  NOTHING!  I am very interested in health and nutrition and 20 years had an almost similar problem from an antibiotic.  I had looked up and paid alot of attention to the Candida articles - NO VINEGAR, NO ANTIBIOTICS, NO CARBOHYDRATES OF ANY KIND< NO SUGAR, NO FRUIT.  I went immediately to a strict meat and veggie diet.  The lump has very slowly been getting smaller.  THEN I had some Italian salad dressing as a dip for some Endive last night and woke up this morning with a HUGE lump!  Beyond the shadow of a doubt, I will not eat any vinegar, lemon, citrus for many many years.  This lump will keep me from wearing a low cut shirt or bathing suit.

Good luck!  Michelle ........    ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** private e-mails not allowed*** Please read our Terms of Use

Hi there,

I had exactly the same feeling in my throat for over 6 months or so, after going to the doctor 3 times they could not find out what it was so they finally decided to send me to the ENT doctor to get it checked out.

When the doctor checked it out he told me that this is really common in a lot of people and in fact non-smokers can have this symptoms as well.

This can be caused for a lot of different things one of them being depression or also anxiety.

I then realized that anxiety and depression could easily be the cause of the lump in my throat as for the last four years i have been on and off in depression and feeling a lot of anxiety...

What I do now to forget about the lump and it was also recommended by the doctor is drink little zips of water every now and then.. that helps the throat to relax the muscles of the neck and alleviates the lump feeling....

The doctor also gave me a sheet of paper containing information about this symptom which is called "Globus" unfortunately this was a while ago and i don't have it with me anymore otherwise I would type it up...

Below is a link from wikipedia so feel free to have a read through and start your research from there...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Globus_pharyngis

I hope this post helps to clarifies a bit what this symptom might be.

From my experience I would suggest the following to anyone having this feeling:

-Go to the doctor right away, this will give you peace of mind and will allow you to spot anything you might have if it wasn't the "Globus" symptom. I had this for 6 months and it just seemed to get worst every week... it was probably in my head as well as it turned out to be nothing really.... only globus.

-Try to drink water all day along, it will help you relieve that pressure and also will keep you healthy.

-Try not to think about it, the more attention you give it the more you will feel it.

-Find out what might be causing stress in your life and make some changes if possible to avoid situations of stress that in turn might also cause you anxiety. In my case what causes my depression is my job and the bad weather, I am IT engineer and work in a really busy environment, I tend to take my job very seriously and also tend to take things home with me... so looks like if I am working 24/7 although I only work 8 hours a day.... I am also studying part-time and have to do this very early in the mornings which is also a plus... lack of sleep causes anxiety... Soon I will finish my studies and everything will hopefully change for better.

All the best for everybody

Wow I just love reading these basically because I've had this problem for ohh close to a year now - funny - my daughter is a year old - I really think part of MY problem is anxiety in that I had all this time to do this medical research while I was breastfeeding at 2 am and along and such and not wanting to die because I have this awesome daughter.

I also have systemic issues in my ear/ nose & throat area. A doctor in Japan who looked extensively at me said that my spongy sinus tissue was obese. Nothing to repair, just do nasal cleansing and oiling and keep it moist, use a scarf on a windy day and out a dry towel over my mouth and nose at night.

After my baby it got worse and the anxiety got worse. But I was also drinking wine again and the doctor said no alcohol as it dries things out too much and will aggravate the area.

I resist going to the doctor myself - I have no lumps, nothing that could be 'wrong' just nagging sensations that come and go so Thank You all for your comments and thus support.

Ok right now its been about a week that I have had my symptoms. I am freaking out. It started out with the lump feeling on the left side of my throat. Now my ear feels like it is filled with water and I have a weird sensation along the left side of my jaw too. I can't sleep, I can't eat and I am stressed out to the point where I cry at different times throughout my day. I am trying to get into the Dr but I would like to ease my mind because I don't know how long its going to be. I am a 20 year old girl and I have never smoked anything in my life so I'm not worried about cancer but I have an overactive imagination and high anxiety so I am freaking myself out. HELP!!!

I've had all of these symptoms excaept its not a lump feeling...i can see the lump on the left side of my throat its big enough to touch my uvula (the dangeling thing in your throat xD). I have had this lump in my throat for 7 months now.. the severity of the pain was so unbearable that i had pain medication perscribed.. I've been on three different kinds of antibiotics in the past few months and they didnt change anything about the lump. But a new symptom has come up, there is a weird pressure/pain in my jaw and it hurts to chew on the same side as the lump in my throat. My ears have also been sensitive and in pain, there are lymph nodes all down my throat and on my thyroid that are swollen and i can feel them... Unfortunetly i've been waiting to see a specialist but i cant see him until the end of October, The doctors here otherwise are pretty useless. :/Help?

i was feeling a bump in my throat for a whole month straight it got to the point where i couldn't eat no more. i got really depressed cause of this. i always had jaw problems and breathing problems which caused unexplained anxiety. i went to the doctor and they told me it was allergies so they gave me allergies pills, they worked but randomly the bumb feeling would come back. like 2 months ago i got braces because i figured maybe my bite is whats causing the problem and it was. I guess my jaw was sitting way to back which was messing with my throat i am now feeling way better. dont give up on hope

it might be allergies or a bad bite. maybe your jaw is not sitting in the proper place and its messing with your throat maybe going to the dentist and getting braces would help
